Therapeutic Uses Of Pineapple-Extracted Bromelain In Surgical Care - A Review., Zehra Abdul Muhammad, Tashfeen Ahmad
Department of Surgery Docs
Abstract
Bromelain is an extract obtained from the pineapple plant and is used as a traditional folk remedy for several ailments. In this review, a comprehensive electronic database search was carried out to compile available literature on therapeutic implications of bromelain. Pharmaceutical value of bromelain has been demonstrated in different surgical sub-specialties. Diverse biological processes like anti-inflammatory, anti-oedematous, analgesic, anti-thrombotic, exfoliation etc. are involved in bromelain's therapeutic actions, mediated through the kallikrein-kinin and arachidonic acid pathways as well as through effects on cell mediated immunity. Bromelain equals non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs as an anti-inflammatory agent, but has been shown to have …
Attune With Baby: An Innovative Attunement Program For Parents And Families With Integrated Evaluation, Sara Beth Lohre
Attune With Baby: An Innovative Attunement Program For Parents And Families With Integrated Evaluation, Sara Beth Lohre
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
Infants speak in their own language; sounds, screeches, cries, and howls that help them to communicate their caregiving needs. Unaware, parents may develop a checklist of caregiving approaches to the baby. The infant tells the adult directly what they need, and waits for the parent to respond. Infant talk may change from soft and quiet to loud and aggressive; coos and cries become crying and screams as the infant’s caregiver—communicating the intensity of emotion, urgency of their request, or their frustration with varied and sometimes inadequate, failed, or missing caregiving patterns the infant has no choice but to accept. When …

Fatigue Study Of Cancellous And Cortical Stainless Steel Screws Used With Polymethymethacrylate And The Sop Plate System For The Immobilisation Of Vertebral Fracture And Luxation In Canine Cadavers, Mingrath Mekavichai
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Globally, vertebral fracture and luxation (VFL) are one of the most common neurological injuries in dogs and cats. The standard care for vertebral body stabilisation of canine VFL are screws with polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and the string of pearls (SOP) plate system fixation. The VFL with implants are usually exposed to force in a repetitive or cyclic loading fashion. Indeed, stress on the implant cyclically at a load significantly less than its ultimate tensile strength can cause fatigue failure, one of the major causes of implant breakage. This study aims to compare the failure mode of four different implants using a …

Reactive Oxygen Species-Induced Global Dna Hypomethylation In Bladder Cancer Is Mediated Via Increased Formation Of 8-Hydroxy-2'-Deoxyguanosine, Patcharawalai Whongsiri
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Oxidative stress, as a consequence of the elevated reactive oxygen species (ROS), has been implicated in various chronic diseases including cancers by, for examples, causing oxidative DNA damage and altering epigenetic regulation. Long interspersed element-1 (LINE-1) is an only active retrotransposable elements in human DNA, comprising up to 17% of the whole genome. LINE-1 hypomethylation is reported in bladder cancer and evidently it is a consequence of oxidative stress. In this study, we investigated the expression of 5-methylcytosine (5-mC), 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), LINE-1-endoced protein (ORF1p), histone H3K9me3 and HP1 alpha in bladder cancer tissues. Mechanistic insight into how oxidative stress affected …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Leptospirosis is a re-emerging zoonosis of global distribution including Thailand. It caused by pathogenic Leptospira. The pathogenesis is not clear. Surface-exposed proteins (PSEs) are first part for interactions with host cells, immune system and should be potential targets for vaccine development. To date, many researches study only individual PSEs but the studies of surface proteomic is less. The study of surface proteomic will be important information for pathogenesis studies and search for vaccine candidate. This study aimed to identify surface proteomics of pathogenic Leptospira by surface biotinylation and surface shaving using proteinase K that has been used to identify surface …

This study investigated the association of race, age, and census tract area poverty level on breast cancer stage at diagnosis. The study was limited to women residing in Missouri, aged 18 years and older, diagnosed with breast cancer, and whose cases were reported to the Cancer Registry between 2003 and 2008. The risk, relative risk, and increased risk of late-stage at diagnosis by race, age, and census tract area poverty level were computed. We found that the odds of late-stage breast cancer among African-American women were higher when compared with their white counterpart (OR 1.433; 95% CI, 1.316, 1.560). In …

Our presentation was aimed at providing a thorough overview of concepts that interfere with an adolescent’s ability to stay in school and graduate. Additionally, the presentation addressed what other factors of poverty, such as risk-taking behaviors (e.g., marijuana use, binge drinking, or sexual activity), might carry over into college life and affect a student’s academic career. Variables connected to family community, family responsibilities, and adolescents’ self-esteem were described as well. Finally, the presentation discussed factors that play into a student’s willingness to seek out college campus resources for support. With this paper, we hope to outline variables that lead to …

Little attention has been given to differences in obesity risk factors by racial/ethnic groups. Using data from the 2011-2012 California Health Interview Survey, we examined differences in risk factors for obesity among Whites, Latinos, Asians, and African Americans among 42,935 adults (24.8% obese). Estimates were weighted to ensure an unbiased representation of the Californian population. Multiple logistic and linear regression analyses were used to examine the differences in risk factors for obesity. Large ethnic disparities were found in obesity prevalence: Whites (22.0%), Latinos (33.6%), African Americans (36.1%), and Asians (9.8%). Differences in risk factors for obesity were also observed: Whites …

Real-Time Diesel Particulate Matter Monitoring In Underground Mine Atmospheres, Association With The Standard Method And Related Challenges, Muhammad Usman Khan
Real-Time Diesel Particulate Matter Monitoring In Underground Mine Atmospheres, Association With The Standard Method And Related Challenges, Muhammad Usman Khan
Doctoral Dissertations
"Diesel-powered equipment is a significant component of underground mining operations. Miners' exposure to diesel exhaust is harmful. The standard Diesel Particulate Matter (DPM) monitoring method (NIOSH 5040 method) has limitations that preclude rapid DPM estimation and detailed understanding of DPM variations over time. However, real-time DPM monitors do not inherit these limitations. Biodiesel is often used as a substitute for regular petroleum-diesel because of its ability to emit less DPM. However, accuracy of available real-time DPM monitors has not been determined in mines using 70% to 99% (high-percent) biodiesel. The present research addresses this need by rigorous testing of a …
