Background: Simulation-based counselling using standardised patients (SPs) provide pharmacy students an authentic approach to training; limited data exists regarding student performance using immediate feedback approaches.

Aims: To compare grades of students receiving immediate feedback verses (vs.) delayed feedback.

Methods: A pre-trial assessment of student perceptions and an unblinded randomised trial comparing immediate and delayed feedback. Third year pharmacy students (n=153) counselled SPs in four clinical “experiences”; student grades were the primary outcome. Student t-test and repeated measures were used to compare grades between groups and grades over time.

Seasonally breeding animals reproduce during certain times of the year and, subsequently, behaviors, steroid hormone levels, and brain morphology change. The green anole lizard (Anolis carolinensis) is an excellent model to study the regulation of steroid hormone production because they have distinct hormonal and behavioral differences between sexes and seasons. As in other vertebrates, steroidogenesis in anoles is under the control of the hypothalamus-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. We tested the hypothesis that natural variations in steroid hormone levels between sexes and seasons are mediated within the brain and gonad by examining four genes involved in steroidogenesis: StAR, Cyp17α1, HSD17β3, and Cyp19α1. …

Polyglutamine (polyQ) diseases are inherited fatal neurodegenerative disorders caused by expansion of trinucleotide cytosine-adenine-guanine (CAG) repeats, encoding abnormally long glutamine tracts in respective disease proteins. Currently, there are nine polyQ diseases- including Huntington’s disease and a number of Spinocerebellar ataxias. Interestingly, expanded polyQ proteins are prone to aggregate, and this aggregation may underlie neurodegeneration. In this study, we investigate the expression and localization of FAM171B (a novel polyQ protein) in the brain. Western blotting reveals that FAM171B protein is indeed expressed in the developing and adult mouse brain. Medicare implemented an innovative reimbursement model called Value Based Purchasing (VBP) to ensure hospitals provide quality care for the dollars spent. At the study site, at least 50% of bedside reporting was being conducted at the door of the patient's room instead of at the patient's bedside. The project question addressed whether a computer-based education and training video on bedside reporting and a standardized bedside reporting checklist would increase the rate of bedside shift-to-shift reporting among a medical surgical unit (MSU) to 100%. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a primary cause of cancer-related mortality in the United States. Asian Americans have the highest CRC mortality rates. CRC screening tests can reduce CRC incidence, yet Asian Americans, specifically the subgroup of Vietnamese Americans, underuse CRC screening. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to understand why Vietnamese Americans, ages 50 to 75, underuse CRC screening. Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a serious health concern of patients undergoing orthopedic surgery. Analysis of the study site semiannual reports from January 2014 through March 2015 indicated 10 VTE events in 546 orthopedic cases. The community hospital was classed as an outlier performing in the bottom 10th percentile when compared to other hospitals. Socioemotional selectivity theory predicts that as the end of life approaches, resources that provide immediate, hedonic reward become more important and resources that provide delayed rewards become less important. The present study tested the theory in the context of marital dyads in which one partner had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a terminal disease. ALS patients (N = 102) and their spouses (N = 100) reported their loneliness, financial worry, and psychological health every 3 months for up to 18 months. Objective: To estimate mortality in HIV-positive patients starting combination antiretroviral therapy (ART) and to discuss different approaches to calculating correction factors to account for loss to follow-up.

Methods: A total of 222 096 adult HIV-positive patients who started ART 2009–2014 in clinics participating in the International epidemiology Databases to Evaluate AIDS collaboration in 43 countries in sub-Saharan Africa, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and North America were included.
