Journal Articles: Epidemiology
The recent emergence of both chikungunya and Zika viruses in the Americas has significantly expanded their distribution and has thus increased the possibility that individuals may become infected by more than one Aedes aegypti-borne virus at a time. Recent clinical data support an increase in the frequency of coinfection in human patients, raising the likelihood that mosquitoes could be exposed to multiple arboviruses during one feeding episode. The impact of coinfection on the ability of relevant vector species to transmit any of these viruses (that is, their vector competence) has not been determined. Thus, we here expose Ae. aegypti mosquitoes …

We Like Fried Things: Negotiating Health, Taste And Tradition Among Spanish Caribbean Communities In New York City, Melissa Fuster
Publications and Research
The study was conducted to understand fried-food (FF) consumption among Hispanic Caribbean (HC) communities in New York City. Data were collected through qualitative interviews with 23 adults self-identified as Cuban, Dominican, or Puerto Rican. Most informants considered FFs an important part of their traditional diet. Potential explanations included taste, cost, convenience, and the emotive values attached to FF. FF consumption was contextualized in local foodscapes. Results include strategies to diminish FF consumption and differences across HC groups and migratory generations. The relevance for future nutrition interventions addressing health disparities in this community is discussed

A Guide To The California Immunization Registry And Its Use To Enhance The Delivery Of Immunization Services, Albert Bach, Jeffery A. Goad, Steven P. Nickell
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Pharmacists in California are assuming a greater role as independent providers of immunizations for children and adults under Senate Bill 493 (SB 493). One of the requirements for pharmacists as independent providers of immunizations in California is that they must report their administered doses to the California immunization registry system (CAIR). The National Vaccine Advisory Committee Standards for Immunization Practice also supports this practice by recommending that all immunizing providers report vaccinations to their local and state immunization information systems (IIS). This document presents background and specific features of CAIR; best practice recommendations for the use of IIS lookup, forecasting, …

Why Can't They Settle? The Psychology Of Relational Disputes, Harry L. Munsinger, Donald R. Philbin Jr.
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
Business partners, spouses, and employees all make deals. Whether this means surgeons forming a partnership, spouses dividing child care responsibilities, or prospective workers negotiating terms of employment, everyone negotiates deals. Many of those deals will change by friendly amendment, modified course of dealing, or amicable termination. Some will result in disputes of varying intensity. Our focus is on disputes that not only generate litigation, but lead to the predictably irrational negotiations that resolve most litigated disputes. In other words, we explore what happens when people move from the romance phase of in-group behavior, where they assume the best of others, …

The treatment of most cancers can still be considered inadequate despite the steady progress being made. A prime example of this issue is with epithelial ovarian cancers; this disease presents a significant issue, with a 5-year survival rate of 46% and a survival rate of 28% in patients that develop metastatic disease. Since ovarian cancer has such a high mortality rate, effective treatment modalities are necessary to prolong the quality of life after diagnosis. Psychosocial stress is related to the progression, proliferation, and migration in cancer patients, but the mechanisms of this relationship are not fully understood. The present in …

Models in psychology do not consider the concept of sex addiction the same way as other substance or behavior addictions. For example, sex addiction, which is not a DSM-5 disorder, is often assigned as a label to clients based off of high frequency of sexual behavior. Despite sex addiction not being a diagnosable disorder, sex addiction therapists are conducting treatment with people who identify as sex addicts. Due to this lack of a definition, previous research has found that clinicians may identify sex addiction in clients based on their own preconceived worldviews of what types of sexual behaviors or frequencies …

Title: Use of personalized patient heart diagrams at the bedside to improve quality of care
Background/Introduction: With congenital heart disease no two hearts are exactly the same. Even with the same lesion, the anatomy of the heart can be completely different. In response to a bedside nursing idea following a cardiac arrest, advanced practice nurses (APN) initiated a program to provide personalized cardiac anatomy diagrams at the bedside of every patient on the cardiology service.
Methods: When a cardiac patient is admitted to cardiology floor, the nurse will check the patients chart for an anatomy picture, then will place …

Background/Introduction: Post-operative hospitalization for the Fontan procedure tends to have an extended hospital length of stay (LOS). From 2013-2014, the average LOS at Children’s Mercy for the Fontan procedure is 14 days, whereas the U.S. national reported average is 11 days. Post-operative management of this patient population is often caregiver dependent. It has been theorized that developing a more standardized post-operative management regimen tailored specifically toward the unique physiology of Fontan patients may be able to improve outcomes and decrease LOS.
Methods: A review of literature was performed and revealed three pediatric institutions have published their post-operative Fontan care guidelines. …

SUMMARY
The most common indications for starting tandem procedures were ASFA Category III indications, followed by un-categorized indications.
Similar to other reports in literature, hypocalcemia and hypotension were the most common complications. Transfusion reactions were rare, despite the use of large volumes of plasma.
Tandem procedures in critically ill pediatric patients require close monitoring and excellent communication between staff members.

Introduction: The majority of laboratory testing errors occur in the pre-analytical stage, including specimen collection. Children provide special challenges including small blood volumes, small veins, and an inability to cooperate. We describe collaboration between laboratorians and nursing staff to improve specimen collection and the reliability of test results.
Methods: We identified three areas for improvement: 1) Volume of blood for culture, 2) Urine collection, and 3) Appropriate blood collection through a line. Base line data was established. Guidelines for specimen collection were updated. Nurse members of the Laboratory Utilization Committee developed educational tools.
Results: Nursing education was effective at improving …

Background: Research on post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following natural and human-made disasters has been undertaken for more than three decades. Although PTSD prevalence estimates vary widely, most are in the 20–40% range in disaster-focused studies but considerably lower (3–5%) in the few general population epidemiological surveys that evaluated disaster-related PTSD as part of a broader clinical assessment. The World Mental Health (WMH) Surveys provide an opportunity to examine disaster-related PTSD in representative general population surveys across a much wider range of sites than in previous studies.
Method: Although disaster-related PTSD was evaluated in 18 WMH surveys, only six in high-income …
