Noncontact Diffuse Correlation Tomography Of Breast Tumor, Lian He Jan 2015

Noncontact Diffuse Correlation Tomography Of Breast Tumor, Lian He

Theses and Dissertations--Biomedical Engineering

Since aggressive cancers are frequently hypermetabolic with angiogenic vessels, quantification of blood flow (BF) can be vital for cancer diagnosis. Our laboratory has developed a noncontact diffuse correlation tomography (ncDCT) system for 3-D imaging of BF distribution in deep tissues (up to centimeters). The ncDCT system employs two sets of optical lenses to project source and detector fibers respectively onto the tissue surface, and applies finite element framework to model light transportation in complex tissue geometries. This thesis reports our first step to adapt the ncDCT system for 3-D imaging of BF contrasts in human breast tumors. A commercial 3-D …

A Clinical Case Study Exploring The Impact Of Bilingual Support In Speech-Language Intervention For A Child With Autism, Zaynab Taei

Theses and Dissertations--Communication Sciences and Disorders

Managing language choice in speech-language intervention is increasingly an issue for speech-pathologists treating bilingual children. Frequently L2 approaches only are implemented, resulting in negative effects on L1 acquisition, familial ties, and cultural transmission. This study examined the impact of a bilingual intervention on a school-aged child and her family. Providing intervention and therapy activities in the L1 resulted in increased parental engagement, increased L1 use by the child, and increased awareness of strategies for treating bilingual children among SLPs at the study site.

Treating Public Speaking Anxiety: A Comparison Of Exposure And Video Self-Modeling, Emily Marie Bartholomay Jan 2015

Treating Public Speaking Anxiety: A Comparison Of Exposure And Video Self-Modeling, Emily Marie Bartholomay

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

This study examined the relative effectiveness of VSM and exposure in treating public speaking anxiety in reducing anxiety with a college student. The study employed a single-subject A-B design with parametric variations. Two phases were utilized in this study: baseline (exposure therapy) and treatment (video self-modeling) with a one-month follow-up. Generalization probes were also employed to assess whether or not decreases in PSA would generalize to other settings. Results indicate a significant decrease in public speaking anxiety from both pre- to post-treatment as well as from baseline to exposure. However, these results may be specific to public speaking anxiety, as …

Depressive Symptoms And Violence Exposure: Contributors To Repeat Pregnancies Among Adolescents, Cheryl Ann Anderson

Nursing Faculty Publications & Presentations - Archive

Depressive symptoms and violence exposure (VE) often cooccur and have been recognized to influence childbearing; contribution to repeat pregnancy is unclear and examined in this article. This cross-sectional, descriptive, study screened for depressive symptoms and VE among 193 adolescent mothers at a large county hospital in Southwestern United States. Repeat pregnancy and depressive symptoms characterized one-third and one-quarter of adolescents, respectively. Despite minimal disclosure of VE, repeat pregnancy was significantly influenced by child abuse and past traumatic life experiences. Assessments and interventions with adolescents should focus on frequency of repeat pregnancies and symptoms of depression and VE. Nurses and childbirth …

Measuring The Direct Nurses' And Nurse Leaders' Perceptions Of A Healthy Work Environment Within Acute Care Settings, Penny Susette Huddleston

Nursing Dissertations - Archive

Healthy work environments (HWEs) have been described as policies, procedures, and processes designed to empower nurses to meet the organizational objectives and achieve personal satisfaction in the work environment (American Association of Critical-Care Nurses, 2005; Lake, 2007; Schmalenberg & Kramer, 2008; Shirey, 2006). Unhealthy work environments (UWEs) throughout healthcare organizations have been linked to absenteeism, ineffective delivery of healthcare to patients and families, higher stress levels, poor communication, and ineffective collaboration and teamwork among healthcare professionals (Heath, Johanson, & Blake, 2004). The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) developed a Healthy Work Environment Assessment Tool (HWEAT) for nurses to use …

Increasing Drug Screens And Prescription Drug Monitoring Program Assessments For Patients Enrolled In Opioid Replacement Therapy, Kimberly Thompson

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects - Archive

Opioid use disorder is an epidemic that has a devastating impact on public health, morbidity and mortality, and the escalating economic burden of healthcare (U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, 2013). The rates of prescriptive and nonprescriptive opioid misuse are on the rise (Compton, Boyle, & Wargo, 2015). One approach in managing opioid use disorder is opioid replacement therapy (ORT). In response to increasing rates of opioid use disorder, the Drug Addiction Treatment Act of 2000 permitted "qualifying physicians" to treat opioid use disorder in an office-based setting. The FDA approved medication buprenorphine, a partial opioid agonist, is used …

Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

Bovine odorant-binding protein (bOBP) differs from other lipocalins by lacking the conserved disulfide bond and being able to form the domain-swapped dimers. To identify structural features responsible for the formation of the bOBP unique dimeric structure and to understand the role of the domain swapping on maintaining the native structure of the protein, structural properties of the recombinant wild type bOBP and its mutant that cannot dimerize via the domain swapping were analyzed. We also looked at the effect of the disulfide bond by designing a monomeric bOBPs with restored disulfide bond which is conserved in other lipocalins. Finally, to …

We show here that chicken gizzard caldesmon (CaD) and its C-terminal domain (residues 636-771, CaD136) are intrinsically disordered proteins. The computational and experimental analyses of the wild type CaD136 and series of its single tryptophan mutants (W674A, W707A, and W737A) and a double tryptophan mutant (W674A/W707A) suggested that although the interaction of CaD136 with calmodulin (CaM) can be driven by the non-specific electrostatic attraction between these oppositely charged molecules, the specificity of CaD136-CaM binding is likely to be determined by the specific packing of important CaD136 tryptophan residues at the CaD136-CaM interface. It is suggested that this interaction can be …

There is a natural protein form, insoluble and resistant to proteolysis, adopted by many proteins independently of their amino acid sequences via specific misfolding-aggregation process. This dynamic process occurs in parallel with or as an alternative to physiologic folding, generating toxic protein aggregates that are deposited and accumulated in various organs and tissues. These proteinaceous deposits typically represent bundles of β-sheet-enriched fibrillar species known as the amyloid fibrils that are responsible for serious pathological conditions, including but not limited to neurodegenerative diseases, grouped under the term amyloidoses. The proteins that might adopt this fibrillar conformation are some globular proteins and …

Solvent Properties Of Water In Aqueous Solutions Of Elastin-Like Polypeptide, Luisa A. Ferreira, James T. Cole, Christian Reichardt, Nolan B. Holland, Vladimir N. Uversky, Boris Y. Zaslavsky

Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

The phase-transition temperatures of an elastin-like polypeptide (ELP) with the (GVGVP)40 sequence and solvent dipolarity/polarizability, hydrogen-bond donor acidity, and hydrogen-bond acceptor basicity in its aqueous solutions were quantified in the absence and presence of different salts (Na2SO4, NaCl, NaClO4, and NaSCN) and various osmolytes (sucrose, sorbitol, trehalose, and trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO)). All osmolytes decreased the ELP phase-transition temperature, whereas NaCl and Na2SO4 decreased, and NaSCN and NaClO4 increased it. The determined phase-transition temperatures may be described as a linear combination of the solvent’s dipolarity/polarizability and hydrogen-bond donor acidity. The …

Identifying Similar Patterns Of Structural Flexibility In Proteins By Disorder Prediction And Dynamic Programming, Aidan Petrovich, Adam Borne, Vladimir N. Uversky, Bin Xue Jan 2015

Identifying Similar Patterns Of Structural Flexibility In Proteins By Disorder Prediction And Dynamic Programming, Aidan Petrovich, Adam Borne, Vladimir N. Uversky, Bin Xue

Molecular Medicine Faculty Publications

Computational methods are prevailing in identifying protein intrinsic disorder. The results from predictors are often given as per-residue disorder scores. The scores describe the disorder propensity of amino acids of a protein and can be further represented as a disorder curve. Many proteins share similar patterns in their disorder curves. The similar patterns are often associated with similar functions and evolutionary origins. Therefore, finding and characterizing specific patterns of disorder curves provides a unique and attractive perspective of studying the function of intrinsically disordered proteins. In this study, we developed a new computational tool named IDalign using dynamic programming. This …

Expandable Total Humeral Replacement In A Child With Osteosarcoma, Eric R. Henderson, Jidi Gao, John Groundland, Odion Binitie, G. Douglas Letson

Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine Faculty Publications

Case. A right-handed 8-year-old female patient presented with a conventional, high-grade osteosarcoma involving her right humerus; through-shoulder amputation was recommended. After consultation, total humerus resection with expandable, total humeral endoprosthesis reconstruction was performed with a sleeve to encourage soft-tissue ingrowth. At three-year follow-up she has received one lengthening procedure and her functional scores are excellent. Conclusion. Total humeral resection and replacement in the pediatric population are rare and although early reports of expandable total humeral endoprosthesis outcomes demonstrate high failure rates, this patient’s success indicates that expandable total humeral replacement is a viable option.

A Novel Approach For The Treatment Of Radiation-Induced Hemorrhagic Cystitis With The Greenlight™ Xps Laser, Daniel Roberto Martinez, Cesar E. Ercole, Juan Gabriel Lopez, Justin Parker, Mary K. Hall

Urology Faculty Publications

Introduction: The treatment of pelvic malignancies with radiotherapy can develop severe sequelae, especially radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis. It is a progressive disease that can lead to the need for blood transfusion, hospitalizations, and surgical interventions. This tends to affect the quality of life of these patients, and management can at times be difficult. We have evaluated the GreenLight Xcelerated Performance System (XPS) with TruCoag, although primarily used for management of benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), for the treatment of radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis.

Materials and Methods: After International Review Board (IRB) approval, a retrospective chart review was performed in addition to a literature …

Experiences With Pregnancy Among Female Sex Workers In Ethiopia: A Link Up Exploratory Study, Population Council, Miz-Hasab Research Center, Organization For Social Services For Aids

HIV and AIDS

In Ethiopia, it is illegal to operate a brothel or procure sex workers as a commercial activity, but the sale of sex by women is not prohibited by law. Research suggests that the number of Ethiopian female sex workers is growing, with younger women and girls increasingly entering the sex trade. Public health programs and policies typically have emphasized HIV prevention in this vulnerable population. A 2014 study of 3,882 Ethiopian female sex workers found that HIV prevalence in the 10 study sites ranged from 15–33 percent, compared to national prevalence of 1.9 percent among women. Furthermore, since most female …

A Nuclear Fraction Of Turnip Crinkle Virus Capsid Protein Is Important For Elicitation Of The Host Resistance Response, Sung-Hwan Kang, Feng Qu, Thomas J. Morris

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

The N-terminal 25 amino acids (AAs) of turnip crinkle virus (TCV) capsid protein (CP) are recognized by the resistance protein HRT to trigger a hypersensitive response (HR) and systemic resistance to TCV infection. This same region of TCV CP also contains a motif that interacts with the transcription factor TIP, as well as a nuclear localization signal (NLS). However, it is not yet known whether nuclear localization of TCV CP is needed for the induction of HRT-mediated HR and resistance. Here we present new evidence suggesting a tight correlation between nuclear inclusions formed by CP and the manifestation of HR. …
