Functional Properties Of Gelatin Recovered From Scales Of Farmed Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus Labrax), Mehmet Tolga Di̇nçer, Özlem Yeşi̇m Ağçay, Hülya Sargin, Huri̇ye Bayram

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In the current study gelatin was recovered from scales of farmed sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). The first part of the study was planned to determine the yield of acid-soluble collagen and pepsin-soluble collagen from the scales. Both collagens were characterized as type I collagen, containing \alpha-1 and \alpha-2 chains. In the second part, gelatin was extracted using acetic acid and functional properties were determined in this product. Gelatin protein value was found to be 96% and the yield was found to be 18.49%. Proline and hydroxyproline values in the amino acid were found to be high. The gel strength of …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Histological sections of femur, tibia, and metatarsals originating from sheep (Ovis aries), goat (Capra hircus), and roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) were examined in this study. Our research focused mainly on the quantitative characteristics of the microstructure of these bones. The areas, perimeters, minimum and maximum diameters of the secondary Haversian units, as well as structures of the primary osteonal units were assessed using comparative statistical methods. In addition to these parameters, the present paper investigated the usefulness of fractal analysis (fractal dimension and lacunarity), a new approach that quantifies the complexity and the emptiness pattern of biological structures. Moreover, our …

Genetic Diversity Of Village Chickens In Central Black Sea Region And Commercial Chickens In Turkey By Using Microsatellite Markers, Levent Mercan, Ahmet Okumuş

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Local chicken populations in the Central Black Sea Region of Turkey have been intensively affected by governmental poultry culling due to avian influenza outbreak risks. The aim of this study was to investigate the genetic diversity of indigenous chicken populations raised in the Central Black Sea Region in order to assess genetic structures of these populations and to determine genetic relationships between the study populations and certain commercial chicken genotypes. Genotypic diversity of 45 Turkish village chicken populations located in 5 provinces in the Central Black Sea Region of Turkey and 2 commercial hybrid populations were compared using 28 autosomal …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Dyslipidemia is one of the most important risk factors for coronary artery disease (CAD), and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is used to measure dyslipidemia. Non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) seems to be an alternative parameter to LDL-C as it is not influenced by triglyceride (TG) levels. The aim of this study is to compare non-HDL-C and LDL-C levels as risk markers in CAD patients. Materials and methods: One hundred and ten CAD patients and 42 individuals with normal coronary angiography results were included in this study. Patients were divided into 2 groups: TG < 200 mg/dL (n = 75) as group 1 and TG > 200 mg/dL (n = 35) as group 2. …

Role Of Autophagy In The Pathogenesis Of Alzheimer Disease, Muhammet Cemal Kizilarslanoğlu, Zekeri̇ya Ülger

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Alzheimer disease (AD) is the most common progressive neurodegenerative disorder causing increased morbidity and mortality. It is characterized by accumulation of amyloid-β in neurons. As there is no known definitive treatment of this disorder, studies trying to determine its exact pathogenetic pathways and target therapies for these specific pathways are being rapidly conducted. Autophagy is one of the areas of interest in studies on the pathogenesis of AD. It is a process of self-digestion that is thought to be a response to stressors and allows cells to adapt to environmental changes. There is accumulating evidence showing an association between autophagy …

Alzheimer Disease And Anesthesia, Gözde İnan, Zerri̇n Özköse Şatirlar

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Alzheimer disease (AD) is one of the most common neurodegenerative diseases and the most prevalent form of dementia. Some factors in the development of AD, age being the best-known one, have been suggested; however, no causes have been found yet. The pathophysiology of the disease is highly complex, current therapies are palliative, and a cure is still lacking. Adverse effects of anesthetics in the elderly have been reported since the 1950s; however, awareness of this old problem has recently gained importance again. Whether exposure to surgery and general anesthesia (GA) is associated with the development of AD has been questioned. …

Background/aim: To compare plasma vitamin D concentrations among patients with normal cognitive function (control group), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), and Alzheimer disease (AD). Materials and methods: In total, 158 patients with AD, 228 patients with MCI, and 603 control subjects were included. Plasma levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D were measured after comprehensive geriatric assessment and compared among groups. SPSS 15.0 was used for statistical analysis. Results: Mean levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D were significantly different among the 3 groups of AD patients, MCI patients, and controls (P < 0.001). Post hoc analysis revealed that the levels were significantly lower in the MCI group than the control group (P = 0.002) and significantly lower in the AD group than the control group (P = 0.003). Multivariate analysis showed that age (OR: 1.070, 95% CI: 1.025-1.116, P = 0.002), instrumental activities of daily living score (OR: 0.920, 95% CI: 0.850-0.995, P = 0.037), 25-hydroxyvitamin D level (OR: 0.959, 95% CI: 0.932-0.987, P = 0.004), and diabetes mellitus (OR: 2.476, 95% CI: 1.153-5.319, P = 0.020) were factors independently associated with AD. Conclusion: This study demonstrated that there is a correlation between plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels and cognitive functions.

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Alzheimer disease (AD) is triggered by interactions of multiple genetic and environmental factors. The APOE gene E4 allele is the best-known risk factor for AD, yet it represents a small ratio of genetic factors. According to genome-wide association studies, the BIN1 gene is the second important risk factor for AD, following the APOE gene. We aimed to identify a novel biomarker indicating susceptibility to AD by investigating APOE alleles and BIN1 gene polymorphisms in a Turkish population. Materials and methods: Fifty-three AD patients and 56 controls were included to examine polymorphism and allele frequency of the APOE and BIN1 …

Background/aim: To compare the cognitive functions and define the frequency of Alzheimer disease (AD) between participants with and without age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Materials and methods: Fifty-nine patients with late-stage AMD (74.3 ± 7.3 years) and 49 age-, sex-, and education-matched control subjects were compared for the presence of AD according to the guidelines of the National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke and the Alzheimer's Disease and Related Disorders Association (NINCDS-ADRDA). Detailed neuropsychological tests were performed for all subjects. Results: Neuropsychiatric tests scores were lower in the AMD group than the control group. The frequency of AD …

Background/aim: To evaluate acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitory activity and antioxidant capacity of the major molecule from Salvia sp., rosmarinic acid, as a drug candidate molecule for treatment of Alzheimer disease (AD). Materials and methods: The AChE inhibitory activity of different extracts from Salvia trichoclada, Salvia verticillata, and Salvia fruticosa was determined by the Ellman and isolated guinea pig ileum methods, and the antioxidant capacity was determined with DPPH. The AChE inhibitory activity of the major molecule rosmarinic acid was determined by in silico docking and isolated guinea pig ileum methods. Results: The methanol extract of Salvia trichoclada showed the highest inhibition …
