Nursing faculty are sometimes challenged when leading students to successful completion of nursing exams including the NCLEX. It is essential that faculty identify specific learning barriers for students who are challenged with nursing exams. Nursing faculty have reported various methods of remediation to enhance students’ readiness for taking nursing exams in preparation for the NCLEX. Although test review sessions, guided imagery, and assessments of learning styles are common strategies reported by faculty to provide remediation for students who are preparing for nursing exams, the literature reveals minimal evidence to support these strategies. Nursing faculty at IPFW have expanded on common …

Defining And Adhering To Standards Of Professionalism In Residency, Jeffrey S. Berger, Amanda N. Hopkins, Gurwinder Gill

E-Learning Modules

This resource is a learning module developed for first-year residents to gain exposure to the tenets of professionalism, both in the general practice of medicine and within their own specialty. By completion of this module, each resident will have articulated his or her personal standards of professional behavior and have made a written commitment to strive for those standards in everyday clinical situations.

To evaluate the effectiveness of this module, a brief survey was distributed to current and former residents who had completed the module. The survey presented a series of 10 statements and asked participants to report their level …

Does Flexibility Correlate With Crunch Factor In Golf And Produce Faster Clubhead Speed?, Christopher Joyce Oct 2015

Does Flexibility Correlate With Crunch Factor In Golf And Produce Faster Clubhead Speed?, Christopher Joyce

Christopher Joyce

Introduction: Crunch factor (CF) in golf is the product of lateral bending of the trailing side and axial rotation velocity. CF is maximised at ball impact (BI) and is thought to increase force behind the ball and increase clubhead speed. Investigations have reported dissimilar findings on CF and low back pain although, flexibility and CF have yet to be assessed. The first aim of this study was to see if flexibility (absolute range of motion – ROM) enabled golfers to maximise CF at BI for trunk and lower trunk segments. The second aim was to see if absolute ROM variables …

Reports on self-estimated life satisfaction and religiosity (present and future projected) in different populations of Mexican university students. Student levels of life satisfaction were comparable to the national norms (Mitofsky) but were lower than the national norms for religiosity. Unlike in the U.S., there was no correlation between religiosity and life satisfaction. Students in a gerontology program showed higher levels of religiosity than those in another university.

A Machine Learning Approach To Post-Market Surveillance Of Medical Devices, Jonathan Bates, Shu-Xia Li, Craig Parzynski, Ronald Coifman, Harlan Krumholz, Joseph Ross

Yale Day of Data

Post-market surveillance is a collection of processes and activities used by product manufacturers and regulators, such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to monitor the safety and effectiveness of medical devices once they are available for use “on the market”. These activities are designed to generate information to identify poorly performing devices and other safety problems, accurately characterize real-world device performance and clinical outcomes, and facilitate the development of new devices, or new uses for existing devices. Typically, a device is monitored by comparing adverse events in the exposed population to a matched unexposed population. This research considers …

Richard A. Malthaner

Management of patients who have disease relapse after completion of surgery and adjuvant chemo-radiation (CRT) is controversial. Some oncologists would advocate intensive therapeutic intervention due to promising experience on treatment for recurrence disease while others would recommend palliative support due to the concerns for poor patient outcome post disease recurrence. In Addition, it is not clear if patient outcome is improved post adjuvant CRT when patients at risk have resection margin involvement and if time interval to recurrence can affect patient survival post relapse. The present study was conducted to determine what factors will affect patient outcome at relapse after …

Increased Patient Health Literacy And Healthcare Provider Structural Competence: Public And Private Strategies For Improving Patient Health Outcomes, Kari Kennedy May 2015

Increased Patient Health Literacy And Healthcare Provider Structural Competence: Public And Private Strategies For Improving Patient Health Outcomes, Kari Kennedy

TAC Talks

Obesity is an ongoing problem in the United States, with an estimated 64.5% of the adult population meeting the current criteria for weight loss treatment (Stevens et al 2015). Previous studies have correlated weight status with several comorbid diseases, and as a result, obesity is widely considered to be a public health concern. While there has been some research into the impact of weight-related public stigma on private patient experiences, the larger public mechanisms that contribute to these patient experiences have yet to be closely examined in this context. In this presentation, I discuss the ways that public factors influence …

Anthropometric, Fitness And Coaches’ Perceptions Of Technical Skill Favour Early Maturing Adolescent Australian Footballers, Ashley Cripps, Luke Hopper, Christopher Joyce

Christopher Joyce

During mid-adolescence, biological maturity can vary greatly between athletes of similar
chronological ages, resulting in early maturing athlete’s benefiting from greater anthropometric and
fitness characteristics, when compared to their late maturing counterparts. In Australian Football,
advantages associated with early maturation may also result in greater technical and perceived skill
efficiency. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of maturational status on
anthropometric and fitness testing, technical skill efficiency and coaches’ perceptions of skill in
talented adolescent Australian Footballers (n=225, age 15.64 ± 0.29 years). An estimation of years
from peak height velocity (Y-PHV) was used to class …

Inclusion Of Seniors In The Design Of Assistive Technology, Margaret Rusnak Apr 2015

Inclusion Of Seniors In The Design Of Assistive Technology, Margaret Rusnak

Ohio Association of Gerontology and Education Conference

Assistive technology helps many older adults complete essential tasks, thus providing them a means to remain functionally independent within their communities. However, many older adults either reject the use of devices or misunderstand their intention. The gap between design and need may be bridged through the active participation of elders in the design process. Previous studies have focused on older persons’ attitudes toward adopting new technology, emphasizing how to promote and maintain usage. Recent research reveals the necessity of including older adults in the design, research, and application of assistive technology in an effort to meet the real needs of …

Formulating a Best Practice Statement for Prison Parenting Programs Purpose: The purpose of this undergraduate honors project was to critically analyze available research on parenting, parenting education, incarcerated parents, and outcomes for the children of incarcerated parents, and make recommendations to a correctional facility for best practices. Background: Over 1.7 million American children have one or more incarcerated parents. These children are at high risk of depression, aggression, and intergenerational incarceration. Many incarcerated men have a limited understanding of parenting and fatherhood. While countless correctional facilities nationally have educational parenting programs, these programs are mainly unstandardized, and their efficacy is …
