Objective: To compare sociodemographic and motivational factors for healthcare use and identify desirable health-promoting resources among groups in a low socioeconomic status (SES) community in Chicago, IL. Background: Disparities in health services and outcomes are well established in low SES urban neighborhoods in the United States and many factors beyond service availability and quality impact community health. Yet there is no clear process for engaging communities in building resources to improve population-level health in such locales. Methods: A hospital building project led to a partnership of public health researchers, architects, and planners who conducted community-engaged research. We collected resident data …
Double Vault Composting Latrines In Rural Paraguay : Feasible Construction And Optimal Use, Paul T. Pebler
Double Vault Composting Latrines In Rural Paraguay : Feasible Construction And Optimal Use, Paul T. Pebler
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
Water resource depletion and sanitation are growing problems around the world. A solution to both of these problems is the use of composting latrines, as it requires no water and has been recommended by the World Health Organization as an improved sanitation technology. However, little analysis has been done on the decomposition process occurring inside the latrine, including what temperatures are reached and what variables most affect the composting process. Having better knowledge of how outside variables affect composting latrines can aid development workers on the choice of implementing such technology, and to better educate the users on the appropriate …

The endocannabinoid 2-arachidonoylglycerol (2-AG) is a retrograde lipid messenger that modulates synaptic function, neurophysiology, and behavior. 2-AG signaling is terminated by enzymatic hydrolysis—a reaction that is principally performed by monoacylglycerol lipase (MAGL). MAGL is broadly expressed throughout the nervous system, and the contributions of different brain cell types to the regulation of 2-AG activityin vivo remain poorly understood. Here, we genetically dissect the cellular anatomy of MAGL-mediated 2-AG metabolism in the brain and show that neurons and astrocytescoordinately regulate 2-AG content and endocannabinoid-dependent forms of synaptic plasticity and behavior. We also find that astrocytic MAGL is mainly responsible …

The aim of this study was to determine the breastfeeding self-efficacy score and to evaluate if there was a relationship between breastfeeding self-efficacy scores and initiation and duration of breastfeeding in a sample of women enrolled in a WIC program. A total of 33 subjects were included in this study. Findings indicated women …
Attitudes Towards An Evidence-Based Clinical Decision Support Tool To Reduce Exposure To Ionizing Radiation, Raymond Zakhari
Attitudes Towards An Evidence-Based Clinical Decision Support Tool To Reduce Exposure To Ionizing Radiation, Raymond Zakhari
Faculty Publications and Presentations
Patients who suffer minor brain injuries experience unnecessary ionizing radiation in the form of a non-contrast head CT scan despite the dearth of evidence supporting standard CT scans for all brain injuries. Exposure to ionizing radiation increases the incidence of certain types of cancer. This evidence-based practice change project assesses the attitude of clinicians towards evidence-based clinical decision support tools, specifically the Canadian CT head rule. The use of highly sensitive clinical decision support tools is supported in the literature to help healthcare providers mitigate the risk associated with unnecessary use of CT scan imaging studies. The project was conducted …

The Relationship Between Cancer Incidence, Stage, And Poverty In The United States, Francis P. Boscoe, Kevin A. Henry, Recinda L. Sherman, Christopher J. Johnson
Epidemiology & Biostatistics Faculty Scholarship
We extend a prior analysis on the relation between poverty and cancer incidence in a sample of 2.90 million cancers diagnosed in 16 U.S. states plus Los Angeles over the 2005-2009 period by additionally considering stage at diagnosis. Recognizing that higher relative disparities are often found among less-common cancer sites, our analysis incorporated both relative and absolute measures of disparities. Fourteen of the 21 cancer sites analyzed were found to have significant variation by stage; in each instance, diagnosis at distant stage was more likely among residents of high-poverty areas. If the incidence rates found in the lowest-poverty areas for …

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The popularity of marathon running has grown exponentially since the 1970s (Noakes, 2003). This major gain in popularity has led to an increased interest in hydration and nutrition for marathon runners (Tucker et al 2009). The effects of dietary factors such as carbohydrates (CHO) and water on endurance has been extensively studied related to performance, but few studies have examined nutrition’s effect on feelings of exertion. The current study aimed to determine how the in-race nutrition and hydration habits of marathon runners affect their feelings of exertion throughout a 26.2-mile race. Individuals running Grandma’s Marathon in Duluth, MN on June …

Hypertension is a prevalent health concern in today’s society, especially among individuals of low-income economic status. An increased risk for heart disease has long been correlated to hypertension, and this risk increases further as the population ages. Patient education is crucial for prevention and management of diseases such as hypertension; therefore it is necessary to develop effective education tools. This is particularly true among high-risk groups such as low-income populations. This study compared the efficacy of printed educational materials versus orally presented educational materials in terms of improving patient knowledge regarding hypertension. Subjects were randomly assigned to either the printed …
Chemically Self-Assembled Antibody Nanorings: A Novel Approach To Bispecific Design For Cancer Therapeutics, Kari A. Gabrielse
Chemically Self-Assembled Antibody Nanorings: A Novel Approach To Bispecific Design For Cancer Therapeutics, Kari A. Gabrielse
All Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Targeted antibody therapeutics are currently being developed for treatment of a wide variety of cancers. By extending the scope of targeted antibody therapeutics into a bispecific design, it has been shown that simultaneous targeting of the CD3 T cell receptor and cancer cell receptors is possible. While great success has been achieved with the use of bispecific agents, many of these agents are genetically fused antibody fragments that can only target one type of cancerous receptor. Here we describe a simple and straightforward method of spontaneously assembling bispecific antibody therapeutics. Using fusion proteins consisting of two dihydrofolate reductase proteins and …
