Effect Of Cmvil-10 On Exosome Production By Human Breast Cancer Cells, Susanna N. Basappa
Effect Of Cmvil-10 On Exosome Production By Human Breast Cancer Cells, Susanna N. Basappa
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) is a ubiquitous virus that infects 70-90% of the general population, primarily the immunocompromised, but has been implicated in several forms of cancer, including breast cancer. Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer related deaths in women in North America, usually from metastasis. Exosomes are 30-100nm vesicles produced by most cells which carry protein and RNA to cells in their microenvironment. The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of HCMV-infection of a secreted viral cytokine, cmvIL-10, on exosome production by highly metastatic breast cancer cells.

Examination Of Dietary Intake And Supplement Use Among Girls Ages 9-18, With Emphasis On Calcium And Iron, Katelyn E. Castro, Sydney Karp
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Diets of children and adolescents are often lacking in key nutrients due to their low intakes of important food groups (e.g. fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and dairy). This study examined nutrients of concern for growing girls compared to dietary recommendations. Specifically iron and calcium were analyzed to determine the highest dietary sources of these micronutrients and the impact of supplementation on girls’ mean intake. This cross-sectional analysis used a subset of data from a longitudinal study of growth and development in active Caucasian girls (n=74). Dietary data and supplement use were collected using the Youth Adolescent Questionnaire (Rockett, Wolf & …

A Study To Explore Mindfulness Among Vegetarian And Non-Vegetarian Students On A College Campus, Miho Hatanaka
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Mindful eating is characterized by being fully present in the moment and using all the senses in the body to taste and savor food. There is a growing interest in the practice of mindful eating as it is shown to be effective for weight management and improving diet. Also in general, studies have shown that vegetarians tend to be more conscious about their food choices. This project, a cross sectional study, examines whether vegetarians exhibit a higher index of mindful eating than non-vegetarians. To conduct this study, 564 self-administered online surveys were collected and evaluated. The survey included both questions …
A Comparison Of Turkish Students In Istanbul And Syracuse: Using Three-Day Food Records, Surveys, And Photovoice To Evaluate Changes In Dietary Habits With Acculturation And Plan An Appropriate Nutrition Intervention, Brittany L. Peterson
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
The immigrant population of the United States is growing rapidly, so the health status of immigrant populations is an important public health issue. When it comes to nutrition, research has shown that immigration to the United States is often associated with an increased risk of chronic diseases, in particular, those related to dietary changes that include lower fruit and vegetable consumption and higher fat intake (Satia et al., 2002).
“Dietary acculturation” is the term used to describe the changing dietary patterns of immigrants, but in this research it is used in relation to the changing dietary habits of international students …

Growing Food And Community: An Exploration Of Local Food Initiatives In Cape Town, South Africa, Megan Bradley
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Local food has recently arisen as a social movement, a diet, and an economic strategy. While the concept is abstract, it is characterized by an emphasis on organic production, conscious consumption, and the convergence of the farm and table. In Cape Town, South Africa, efforts exist across a wide variety of businesses, organizations and communities defined geographically, socially, and economically. This study explores the role of local food initiatives in sustainable community development with a focus on the notions of food sovereignty, community capacity, and social capital. It aims to compare diverse schemes in the movement to identify commonalities in …
Fracture Toughness Of Irradiated Bone In A Murine Model, Lynda Marie Brady
Fracture Toughness Of Irradiated Bone In A Murine Model, Lynda Marie Brady
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Cancer is a prevalent and diverse disease affecting fourteen million people in the United Sates alone. While some cancers can be treated effectively with one-time operations such as surgery, other cancers require more persistent treatments, commonly chemotherapy and radiation. These latter two treatments can have extreme side-effects and long-term ramifications. One long-term side effect of radiation therapy is a higher incidence of insufficiency fractures in bones of the skeleton. The mechanism responsible for this apparent weakness in bone is not well understood. In order to quantify changes in ductility following radiation therapy, femora from mice treated with 20 Gy radiation …

Diabetes Type 2 Self-Management Education Program: Short Messaging From Patient Portal To Web-Enabled Device, Lynn S. Holcomb
Diabetes Type 2 Self-Management Education Program: Short Messaging From Patient Portal To Web-Enabled Device, Lynn S. Holcomb
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
Only one in eight adults with diabetes reaches target goals for disease management, which can lead to clinical complications, costly both economically and in quality and duration of human life. The standard of care is a quarterly 15-minute face-to-face visit-- arguably inadequate to impart self-care knowledge. The purpose of this EBP project was to deliver a 30-day diabetes self-management education program (DSMEP) utilizing widely accessible web-based technology to facilitate adults with diabetes to reach targeted goals. Using the Chronic Care Model as a framework, the DSMEP design was based on an extensive literature review of the delivery of DSMEP in …
The Effects Of Implementing Best Practices On 30-Day Readmission Rates In Adults Following Cabg Surgery, Linda Elaine Kline
The Effects Of Implementing Best Practices On 30-Day Readmission Rates In Adults Following Cabg Surgery, Linda Elaine Kline
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery is one of the most frequent and expensive cardiac surgical procedures in the U.S. today. Complications from CABG surgery are one of the top causes of 30-day hospital readmissions. Readmissions after CABG surgery are often preventable and add to health care costs. Recent government legislation mandates penalties for hospitals with excess readmission rates. The purpose of this evidence-based practice project was to determine if implementation of best practice recommendations effected 30-day readmission rates following CABG surgery. A critical appraisal of the literature was conducted to identify best practice recommendations. The Iowa model and Lewin’s …
The Effect Of An Educational Intervention On Oral Anticoagulation Therapy Knowledge In Primary Care, Elizabeth D. Deck
The Effect Of An Educational Intervention On Oral Anticoagulation Therapy Knowledge In Primary Care, Elizabeth D. Deck
Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports
It is estimated that three million people in the United States are on oral anticoagulation therapy (warfarin). Populations studied have been found in therapeutic range 64% of the time (Pernod, Labarere, & Bosson, 2008). The low percentage of therapeutic range is attributable to (a) adherence, (b) monitoring infrequency, (c) Vitamin K antagonists, and (d) the effects of aging and comorbidities. The purpose of this evidence-based practice (EBP) project was to examine whether an educational intervention would improve the knowledge of patients receiving warfarin therapy. Roy’s model for patient adaptation and the Stetler Model for EBP were used as frameworks for …
Illness Beliefs And Adherence Among Louisiana Adults With Type 2 Diabetes, Denise L. Stagg
Illness Beliefs And Adherence Among Louisiana Adults With Type 2 Diabetes, Denise L. Stagg
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is having an enormous impact on the health of the nation. New cases of diabetes are diagnosed yearly across all states. Currently, 9.3% of the population has diabetes (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention {CDC}, 2014). While the prevalence of this disease is nationwide, it is not evenly distributed. Louisiana currently has a rate of 11.5%, with some parishes having rates of 14.5% (CDC, 2014). This rate places increased demands on healthcare and financial systems in Louisiana. Cultural elements and population distribution may be parts of this phenomenon. While many studies explored new medications and …
Preferences For Systems Of Psychotherapy And Beliefs About The Causes Of Depression, Andrew Jarema
Preferences For Systems Of Psychotherapy And Beliefs About The Causes Of Depression, Andrew Jarema
Theses and Dissertations
Despite multiple treatments being equally effective in treating depression, individuals may have preferences for which intervention they receive. There has been evidence that psychotherapy is preferred over medication or other professional treatments. Psychotherapy, however, is a broad term that does not capture the reality of diverse systems of therapy available to consumers. Therefore, the current study hypothesized that if given the choice between conceptually different types of psychotherapy, individuals would express a preference for at least one treatment over the others. Results from 221 college students indicate that when offered descriptions of problem-solving, cognitive, interpersonal, or behavioral activation therapies, both …

Comparison Of Neutral Versus Extended Wrist Pushup For Patients With Wrist Injury, Emily Tucci
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
The scapholunate interosseous ligament (SLIL) is a crucial stabilizing structure of the wrist. Damage to this ligament often results from falling upon an outstretched hand, leading to carpal instability.1,2,3 Tears to the SLIL create a gap in the scapholunate joint and allow the scaphoid to flex and the lunate to extend, rather than moving with one another as they do in healthy physiologic motion.4,5 The SLIL is normally repaired following injury in order to decrease the risk of arthritis and pain.1,2,5,6,7 Patients will often begin rehabilitation exercises after SLIL repair in order to reduce recovery time.8,9 …

Synthesis And Evaluation Of Polysialic Acid-Polycaprolactone Based Micelles For Drug Delivery, Weston Ryan
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
The growing use and investigation of pharmaceuticals to treat disease has offered the field of drug delivery an opportunity to further improve upon the effects provided, as well as address therapeutic complications. An effective long-term treatment for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has yet be developed, while many current treatments pose disadvantageous side effects due to undesirable reactions outside of the diseased tissue. Therefore, there is a need for an improved strategy for RA treatment. A previously developed drug carrier system based on polysialic acid (PSA) and polycaprolactone (PCL) micelles was shown to be effective for in vitro therapeutic use. The evaluated …

Development Of Polyhydroxyalkanoate Nanoparticles For Cancer Therapy, Philip Choiniere
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), a class of biopolyesters produced and stored by bacteria, have garnered attention for a number of industrial and biomedical applications. The goal of the current study was to extend the use of PHAs to drug delivery for the treatment of cancer. As a first step, the cytotoxicity of poly(3- hydroxy-octanoate-co-10-undecanoate) (PHOU) towards the A549 lung carcinoma cell line was determined and nanoparticles were prepared via a single emulsion technique. Elution tests, whereby cells were grown in fluid extracts obtained from media incubated for 24 hours at 37°C with PHOU films, did not result in any significant changes in …
Use Of Immunotherapy In The Treatment Of Peanut Allergies In The Pediatric Population, Bethany Rauscher
Use Of Immunotherapy In The Treatment Of Peanut Allergies In The Pediatric Population, Bethany Rauscher
Senior Honors Theses
Peanut allergies are a serious issue that must be monitored and treated effectively to avoid severe adverse effects and death. In the last decade, their incidence has increased significantly, due to indeterminate factors. Because people typically do not outgrow peanut allergies and the effects of exposure can be life-threatening, it is important that a cure or management method is developed and refined. Recent research regarding treatment for peanut allergies has focused on the use of immunotherapy, a process aimed at desensitizing children's immune systems so that they do not reject foods that contain peanuts. Some studies utilizing immunotherapy have provided …

A Critical Evaluation Of Selective Attention Measures, Hannah K. Wilson
A Critical Evaluation Of Selective Attention Measures, Hannah K. Wilson
Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects
Selective attention is comprised of two simultaneous processes—the inhibition of distractors and the focus of attention on target stimuli; yet, many existing selective attention measures only measure one aspect of selective attention. This leads to a high possibility of Type I errors as high interference control or high working memory capacity may be mistaken for high selective attention. This paper proposes several criteria for high construct validity and external validity in selective attention measures.
Concerning construct validity, the test must allow participants to exercise selective attention, adequately measure the level of attention to the distractor stimuli, and adequately measure level …

Tonb Not Directly Related To Efflux Of Antibiotics In E. Coli, Amber Gombash
Tonb Not Directly Related To Efflux Of Antibiotics In E. Coli, Amber Gombash
Honors Projects
Studies in Pseudomonas aeruginosa have suggested that the TonB energy transduction system directly contributes to efflux-mediated antibiotic resistance, ostensibly by energizing one or more efflux systems. We have found ∆tonB strains of Escherichia coli to similarly be more sensitive to certain antibiotics relative to wild-type strains. To test the hypothesis that this enhanced sensitivity involved the energization of efflux systems, sensitivity patterns for a variety of antibiotics were evaluated using a set of strains differentially lacking genes encoding the Acr efflux system, the universal outer membrane efflux portal TolC, and TonB. No correlation was evident between the resistance phenotypes of …

Exogenously administered glucocorticoids enhance eosinophil and neutrophil granulocyte production from murine bone-marrow. A hematological response dependent on endogenous glucocorticoids underlies bone-marrow eosinophilia induced by trauma or allergic sensitization/challenge. We detected a defect in granulopoiesis in nonsensitized, perforin-deficient mice. In steady-state conditions, perforin- (Pfp-) deficient mice showed significantly decreased bone-marrow and blood eosinophil and neutrophil counts, and colony formation in response to GM-CSF, relative to wild-type controls of comparable age and/or weight. By contrast, peripheral blood or spleen total cell and lymphocyte numbers were not affected by perforin deficiency. Dexamethasone enhanced colony formation by GM-CSF-stimulated progenitors from wild-type controls, but not …

It is established that cell entry of low density lipoprotein particles (LLPs) containing Apo B100 and Apo E is mediated by receptors and GAGs. Receptor ligand motifs, XBBBXXBX, XBBXBX, and ΨBΨXB, and mono- and bipartite NLS sequences are abundant in Apo E and Apo B100 as well as in envelope and capsid proteins of Dengue viruses 1-4 (DENV1-4). Synthetic, fluorescence-labeled peptides of sequences in DENV2 envelope protein, and DENV3 capsid that include these motifs were used to conduct a qualitative assessment of cell binding and entry capacity using …
