Chlorinated Tyrosine Species As Markers Of Inflammation: A Kinetic Study, Matthew Peter Curtis
Chlorinated Tyrosine Species As Markers Of Inflammation: A Kinetic Study, Matthew Peter Curtis
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Chronic inflammation is associated with numerous human diseases. During inflammation, leukocytes release the enzyme myeloperoxidase (MPO) which generates reactive oxygen species such as hypochlorous acid (HOCl). Additionally, MPO generates reactive nitrogen species. These reactive species can damage host fats, proteins, and DNA, contributing to disease pathology. Because of the reactivity and short half-lives of reactive species, measurement of surrogate markers is necessary to determine their extent and source. Chlorination of the tyrosine phenol ring by HOCl to produce 3-chlorotyrosine (3ClTyr) or nitration of the phenol ring by reactive nitrogen species to produce 3-nitrotyrosine (NO2Tyr) are two such markers. Both are …

Rural Emergency Nurses' Suggestions For Improving End-Of-Life Care Obstacles, Kelly Elizabeth Smith
Rural Emergency Nurses' Suggestions For Improving End-Of-Life Care Obstacles, Kelly Elizabeth Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Introduction: In 2010, of the 129 million visits to the emergency department (ED), 240,000 resulted in the patient dying or being pronounced dead on arrival. This number is likely to continue to increase as a significant portion of the American population ages and seeks care in the ED. Though care in the ED is focused on saving lives, death cannot always be prevented. Consequently, nurses face many barriers to providing quality end-of-life (EOL) care in the ED when death occurs. The purpose of this study was to identify suggestions emergency nurses have to improve EOL care specifically in rural ED's. …

Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR) is a rare congenital disease caused by impaired proliferation and migration of neural crest cells. We investigated changes in expression of microRNAs (miRNAs) and the genes they regulate in tissues of patients with HSCR. Quantitative real-time PCR and immunoblot analyses were used to measure levels of miRNA, mRNAs, and proteins in colon tissues from 69 patients with HSCR and 49 individuals without HSCR (controls). Direct interactions between miRNAs and specific mRNAs were indentified in vitro, while the function role of miR-218-1 was investigated by using miR-218 transgenic mice. An increased level of miR-218-1 correlated with increased levels …

Computational Modeling Analysis Of Mitochondrial Superoxide Production Under Varying Substrate Conditions And Upon Inhibition Of Different Segments Of The Electron Transport Chain., Nikolai I. Markevich, Jan B. Hoek
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
A computational mechanistic model of superoxide (O2•-) formation in the mitochondrial electron transport chain (ETC) was developed to facilitate the quantitative analysis of factors controlling mitochondrial O2•- production and assist in the interpretation of experimental studies. The model takes into account all individual electron transfer reactions in Complexes I and III. The model accounts for multiple, often seemingly contradictory observations on the effects of ΔΨ and ΔpH, and for the effects of multiple substrate and inhibitor conditions, including differential effects of Complex III inhibitors antimycin A, myxothiazol and stigmatellin. Simulation results confirm that, in addition to O2•- formation in Complex …

Librarian Actions To Develop And Sustain Human Research Subject Protection: A Pilot Global Study, Charles J. Greenberg, Sangeeta Narang
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
The Institutional Review Board (IRB), also known as an Independent Ethics Committee (IEC), is the most widely adopted process to insure human participant protection. The IRB system is overburdened as human research studies and human participation has dramatically increased without a corresponding increase in reviewing clinicians or ethics staff. Librarian involvement in the IRB process is evident but uneven and unstudied on an international scale. A literature review and international survey attempted to provide professional practice context and librarian reflection on the extent of their involvement, roles, and responsibilities in the IRB or IEC institutional process. Survey results reveal that …

Semen cryopreservation alters sperm structure and biochemical properties, and subsequently impairs fertilizing ability. A combination of two different sugar molecules revealed an enhanced beneficial effect on frozen-thawed spermatozoa of various species. However, the report in ram has been scarce. The present study investigated the effect of different combinations of sugar supplementation on post-thawed ram semen qualities in a cryopreservative extender in the presence of a single sugar or a combination of sugars. Data showed that a combination of sucrose and trehalose significantly improved cryopreserved sperm motility, viability, longevity and acrosome integrity. Fertility rates following laparoscopic artificial insemination (LAI) using frozen-thawed …

Postparturient Administration Of Prostaglandin F2 Alpha Facilitates Weaning-To-Service Interval In Primiparous Sows, Atthaporn Roongsitthichai, Padet Tummaruk, Nutthee Am-In
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of exogenous prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2α) administration on weaning-to-service interval (WSI) in primiparous sows. A total of 149 primiparous sows, 74 control and 75 treatment sows, were included in the study. The latter sows were intramuscularly injected with PGF2α approximately at 24-48 h after parturition. Results revealed that those treated with PGF2α returned to be in estrus significantly faster than those in the control group (2.6±1.1 vs 4.5±2.1 days, p<0.05), while age at first mating, pregnancy rate, and age at first farrowing were not different from each other. In conclusion, PGF2α could shorten WSI in the primiparous sows as it could induce complete luteolysis and promote uterine involution, resulting in declined non-productive days of the commercial breeding herds.

Is Autologous Or Heterologous Pericardium Better For Valvuloplasty? A Comparative Study Of Calcification Propensity, Wen-Jian Jiang, Yong-Chao Cui, Jin-Hua Li, Xiu-Hui Zhang, Huan-Huan Ding, Yong-Qiang Lai, Hong-Jia Zhang
The Texas Heart Institute Journal
Pericardial calcification is detrimental to the long-term durability of valvuloplasty. However, whether calcification susceptibility differs between heterologous and autologous pericardium is unclear. In this study, we compared the progression of calcification in vivo between autologous and heterologous pericardium.
We randomly divided 28 rabbits into 4 equal groups. Resected rabbit pericardium served as autologous pericardium, and commercial bovine pericardium served as heterologous pericardium. We subcutaneously embedded one of each pericardial patch in the abdominal walls of 21 of the rabbits. The 7 control rabbits (group A) received no implants. The embedded samples were removed at 2 months in group B, at …
