The Differential Contribution Of Behavior And Biology To Breslow Thickness And Melanoma Survival In Males Compared To Females, Jenna Marie Lilyquist Jul 2015

The Differential Contribution Of Behavior And Biology To Breslow Thickness And Melanoma Survival In Males Compared To Females, Jenna Marie Lilyquist

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

There are many well-documented differences between males and females regarding melanoma including incidence rates, presentation, markers of progression, and survival. A common hypothesis to explain the female survival advantage is that males are less aware of their skin, resulting in thicker lesions at diagnosis, and ultimately poorer survival. However, there are also multiple hypotheses attributing the female survival advantage to biological differences between males and females, mostly regarding sex-steroid hormones. Sex has been identified as an independent prognostic marker in multiple studies, supporting the hypothesis that melanoma progression varies between men and women. Despite these findings, stratifying by sex in …

Defining And Assessing Problem Solving Across A Biochemistry Curriculum, Cheryl A. Sensibaugh Jul 2015

Defining And Assessing Problem Solving Across A Biochemistry Curriculum, Cheryl A. Sensibaugh

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Undergraduate discipline-based education research has shown that scientific problem solving involves five domains, spanning the steps of the scientific method as well as metacognition: Hypothesize, Investigate, Evaluate, Integrate, and Reflect. Student performance in each domain is measured with the Individual Problem Solving Assessment (IPSA). Others developed the Critical thinking Assessment Test (CAT) to measure critical thinking, with the view that problem solving is a component of critical thinking. A third group took the perspective that student attitudes about learning science will influence performance, and developed the Colorado Learning Attitudes about Science Survey for Biology (CLASS-Bio) to detect student attitudes. This …

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

OBJECTIVES: We used gated single-photon emission computed tomography Technetium (99mTc) tetrofosmin (SPECT Myoview), myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) to (i) determine whether the location of myocardial infarction and Ischemia affect left ventricular function, and (ii) associated changes between post-stress (SEF) and rest ejection fraction (REF) with segmental perfusion abnormalities. METHODS: Five hundred ninety-eight patients underwent a rest- stress or stress—rest gated SPECT Myoview. A Quantitative Gated SPECT (QGS) software program was used to calculate the left ventricular ejection fraction at rest and stress. The left ventricle was divided into thirteen segments. The perfusion abnormalities on each segment were visually assessed. The …

BACKGROUND: Genome-wide association studies have identified multiple genetic variants associated with prostate cancer risk which explain a substantial proportion of familial relative risk. These variants can be used to stratify individuals by their risk of prostate cancer.

METHODS: We genotyped 25 prostate cancer susceptibility loci in 40,414 individuals and derived a polygenic risk score (PRS). We estimated empirical odds ratios (OR) for prostate cancer associated with different risk strata defined by PRS and derived age-specific absolute risks of developing prostate cancer by PRS stratum and family history.

RESULTS: The prostate cancer risk for men in the top 1% of the …

Pain Management Strategies In Hand Surgery., Constantinos Ketonis, Md, Phd, Asif M Ilyas, Frederic Liss

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

Modern anesthetic agents have allowed for the rapid expansion of ambulatory surgery, particularly in hand surgery. The choice between general anesthesia, peripheral regional blocks, regional intravenous anesthesia (Bier block), local block with sedation, and the recently popularized wide-awake hand surgery depends on several variables, including the type and duration of the procedure and patient characteristics, coexisting conditions, location, and expected length of the procedure. This article discusses the various perioperative and postoperative analgesic options to optimize the hand surgical patients' experience.

Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of prosthetic joint infections, which, as we recently showed, proceed with the involvement of biofilm-like clusters that cause recalcitrance to antibiotic treatment. Here we analyzed why these clusters grow extraordinarily large, reaching macroscopically visible extensions (>1 mm). We found that while specific S. aureus surface proteins are a prerequisite for agglomeration in synovial fluid, low activity of the Agr regulatory system and subsequent low production of the phenol-soluble modulin (PSM) surfactant peptides cause agglomerates to grow to exceptional dimensions. Our results indicate that PSMs function by disrupting interactions of biofilm matrix molecules, such …

We conducted a qualitative study purposively sampling 10 NHs across the country where 6-8 employees were recruited (N = 73). Semi-structured, open-ended guides were used to conduct in-depth interviews. Data were audiotaped, transcribed and a content analysis was performed. Five themes emerged: 'Residents' Needs', 'Roles and Training' 'Using Infection Data,' 'External Resources' and 'Focus on Hand Hygiene.' Infection prevention was a priority in the NHs visited. While all sites had hand hygiene programs, other recommended areas were not a focus and many sites were not aware of available …

Changes In Composite Toxicity Following Exposure To Pulp Capping Materials, Audra Long Jul 2015

Changes In Composite Toxicity Following Exposure To Pulp Capping Materials, Audra Long

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Introduction: Direct pulp capping involves placing a material over the exposed pulp in order to maintain its vitality. For decades, calcium hydroxide (CH) has served as the gold standard for this purpose, but its toxicity to the pulp may negatively impact treatment outcomes. Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) has become a popular alternative based partly on its excellent biocompatibility. Pulp-capped teeth are often restored with highly toxic composite materials, but the pulp capping material’s ability to alter these toxic effects has never been investigated. The purpose of this in vitro study is to determine the effects of Dycal, a CH-based cement, …

The Direct Effect Of Low-Magnitude High-Frequency Mechanical Vibration On Osteoclast Formation From Raw267.4 Monocytes, Maxwell Antonio Abraham Jul 2015

The Direct Effect Of Low-Magnitude High-Frequency Mechanical Vibration On Osteoclast Formation From Raw267.4 Monocytes, Maxwell Antonio Abraham

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Low-magnitude high-frequency (LMHF) mechanical vibration has been demonstrated to enhance bone formation possibly through inhibition of osteoclastogenesis of bone. Earlier research has demonstrated osteoclast formation from RAW264.7 monocytes was inhibited by a chewing cycle mimicking vibration through inhibition of dendritic cell-specific transmembrane protein (DC-STAMP). We hypothesize that application of LMHF mechanical vibration directly inhibits osteoclast formation from RAW264.7 monocytes in a frequency dependent manner. RAW264.7 monocytes (ATCC) were cultured in alpha minimal essential medium (MEM) with 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS ) and 1% Pen/Strep at 37°C and 5% CO2. The cells were seeded at a density of 2000 cells/well …

Thermomechanical Characterization Of Variable Force Niti Orthodontic Archwires, Anjali Sudershan Krishan Mehta

Master's Theses (2009 -)

ABSTRACT THERMOMECHANICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF VARIABLE FORCE NITI ORTHODONTIC ARCHWIRES Anjali Mehta, BDS MDS Marquette University, 2015 Introduction: Nickel-Titanium (NiTi) archwires, due to their properties of superelasticity and shape memory, have been extensively used in orthodontic mechanotherapy. However, one of the shortcomings of these wires is that they deliver constant forces across the entire arch. The amount of force needed to move a tooth is a function of the surface area of the tooth and its supporting bone; and is lesser for single rooted anterior teeth compared to larger molars. The introduction of heat treatment of NiTi wires and the influence …

Joint Modeling Of Treatment Effect On Time-To-Event Endpoint And Safety Covariates In Control Clinical Trial Data Analysis, Kao-Tai Tsai, Karl E. Peace Jul 2015

Joint Modeling Of Treatment Effect On Time-To-Event Endpoint And Safety Covariates In Control Clinical Trial Data Analysis, Kao-Tai Tsai, Karl E. Peace

Biostatistics: Faculty Publications

It is a common practice to perform a separate analysis of efficacy and safety data from clinical trials to estimate the benefit and risk aspects of a particular treatment regimen. However, by doing so, one is likely to miss the complete picture of the treatment effect given that these data are generated from the same study subjects and therefore most likely will be correlated. Therefore, it is desirable to analyze these data jointly to obtain a more complete profile of the treatment regimen. A substantial number of statistical methodologies have been proposed in the last decade to model the time-to-event …
