Abstract

OBJECTIVE:

To evaluate various prognostic factors which determine outcome after surgical repair of vesicovaginal fistula.

METHODS:

The retrospective study was conducted at Koohi Goth Fistula Hospital, Karachi, and comprised data related to patients having undergone vesicovaginal fistula repair from January 2007 to June 2012. Multivariate analysis of the record was done using SPSS 19 software determining odds ratio with 95% confidence interval.

RESULTS:

Prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella and Campylobacter species isolated from duck laying flocks in 7 confinement systems and 7 free-grazing systems were determined in central Thailand. In the confinement system, 13.8% (88/639) of Campylobacter spp. were isolated from cloacal swabs; 72.7% was identified as C. jejuni and 27.3% was identified as C. coli. From drinking and surface water samples, 60.0% of Campylobacter spp. were isolated; all was identified as C. jejuni. Matrix metalloproteinase-2 and -9 (MMP-2 and -9), gelatinases among MMPs, are associated with cell migration, invasion, metastasis and angiogenesis in human solid tumor. The prognostic value of gelatinases in canine lymphoma remains equivocal. To evaluate the relation between serum gelatinases and canine lymphoma, gelatin zymography was used to detect the levels of serum MMP-2 and MMP-9 gelatinase activities in lymphoma-bearing dogs. The aims of this study were to investigate the levels of lactate and glucose in dogs during swimming and to determine the maximal lactate steady state in small and large breeds of dog. Twelve healthy dogs, including small breed (n = 6) and large breed (n = 6), were the study subjects. BACKGROUND: Speckle-tracking echocardiographic (STE) measures of right ventricular (RV) function appear to improve after transcatheter pulmonary valve implantation (TPVI). Measures of exercise function, such as ventilatory efficiency (the minute ventilation [VE]/carbon dioxide production [VCO2] slope), have been shown to be prognostic of mortality in patients who may require TPVI. Firocoxib and carprofen, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), are used in the treatment of canine osteoarthritis. This study evaluated the efficacy and provided information of these NSAIDs in clinical practice. Sixteen healthy dogs of large breeds over 5 years old without systemic diseases and pregnancy that had coxofemoral osteoarthritis were divided into 2 groups, firocoxib group (n=9) and carprofen group (n=7). The effect of low-dose chemotherapy on tumor motility of canine oral malignant melanoma has been investigated on an in vitro model using low-dose cyclophosphamide and piroxicam. Cyclophosphamide, at a concentration of 0.1 mg/mL in culture medium, significantly inhibited tumor cell migration/invasion through trans-well assays and suppressed both ERK and NF-κB signaling, the latter of which was observed through IκB-α and P-IκBα expression. Furthermore, in combination with a COX-2 inhibitor, i.e. piroxicam (0.38 mg/mL in culture medium), cyclophosphamide revealed a potential anti-migration effect over the single piroxicam treatment on a wound assay. This study investigated the level of protection generated by vaccination with a live attenuated infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) vaccine, H120 strain against variant genotype IBV isolated in Thailand. Sixty 1-day-old female broiler chickens were randomly divided into 4 groups of 15 chickens each. Tembusu virus (TMUV) namely KPS54A61 has spread in duck farms in many provinces in Thailand since 2010. The morbidity ranges from 15-30% and the mortality ranges from 10-15%. All infected ducks exhibit nervous signs including ataxia and paralysis. TMUV was successfully isolated from the brain and spinal cord of infected ducks by using C6/36 and Vero cells, but the typical cytopathic effect (CPE) was presented in the Vero cells only. Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) are known as pathogens associated with chronic diseases in cat. This present study determined the prevalence of FIV and FeLV infections in Bangkok and its vicinity, including Nonthaburi and Pathumthani, during April 2013-March 2014 in owned cats. A total of 777 serum or plasma samples were submitted to a private veterinary laboratory in Bangkok. The prevalence of FIV infection, FeLV infection and co-infection was 5.4% (42/777), 16.5% (128/777) and 3.5% (27/777), respectively. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of Lactobacillus plantarum on enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) and Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) in order to reduce lesions and fecal shedding for the control of colibacillosis and edema disease in postweaning pigs. ETEC K88 colonized in greater abundance on the surface of the small intestinal tract of non-L. plantarum-fed pigs compared to L. plantarum-fed pigs. Reduced intestinal adherence and fecal shedding of ETEC K88 was observed in the L. plantarum-fed pigs, whereas brain lesions and fecal shedding of STEC F18 remained unchanged. Objective: To describe the clinical and laboratory features of hereditary hemochromatosis associated liver disease in a tertiary care hospital.

Study Design: Observational study.

Place and Duration of Study: The Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, from January 2002 to October 2012.

Methodology: Charts of patients with Hereditary Hemochromatosis (HHC) were reviewed. Data collected and analyzedconsisting of clinical presentations, liver function tests, serum ferritin, transferrin saturation, hepatic imaging and histologyin patients with HHC.

Context: Continued research into the mechanism of noncontact anterior cruciate ligament injury helps to improve clinical interventions and injury-prevention strategies. A better understanding of the effects of anticipation on landing neuromechanics may benefit training interventions.

Objective: To determine the effects of anticipation on lower extremity neuromechanics during a single-legged land-and-cut task.

Design: Controlled laboratory study.

Setting: University biomechanics laboratory.

Participants: Eighteen female National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I collegiate soccer players (age = 19.7 ± 0.8 years, height = 167.3 ± 6.0 cm, mass = 66.1 ± 2.1 kg).

Study selection: Clinical studies, either randomised or not, comparing implant failure rates, marginal bone level (MBL) and/or postoperative infection in any group of patients receiving platform-switched implants or platform-matched implants were considered.

Data extraction and synthesis: Study quality was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale (NOS).Only randomised clinical trials (RCTs) were considered for meta-analysis. Primary intraosseous salivary malignancies are rare. The adenoid cystic adenocarcinoma, adenocarcinoma not otherwise specified, acinic cell adenocarcinoma and the epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma have all been reported within the jaws. The mucoepidermoid carcinoma is by far the most common tumor in this setting accounting for 2%-4% of all mucoepidermoid carcinomas. An intraosseous sebaceous adenocarcinoma has never been reported. We document a case of sebaceous adenocarcinoma of the maxilla in a 56-year-old woman who presented with a painful swelling of the right face. Methods: The SMCI was designed in three sequential phases: (1) Conceptualization and Domain Specifications, (2) Item Development, and (3) Inventory Testing and Finalization. Phase 1 consisted of a literature review, concept operationalization, and expert reviews. Background: It has been reported that strenuous exercise increases the number of bone marrow-derived progenitor cells such as CD34⁺ cells in the blood, but no previous studies have investigated the changes in circulating CD34⁺ cells following resistance exercise. This study tested the hypothesis that the number of CD34⁺ cells in the blood would increase after eccentric exercise of the elbow flexors, but decrease in recovery, and the magnitude of the changes would be dependent on the magnitude of muscle damage.
