Speech delay is a childhood language problem that sometimes is resolved on its own but sometimes may cause more serious language difficulties later. This leads therapists to screen children for detection at early ages in order to eliminate future problems. Using the Goldman-Fristoe Test of Articulation (GFTA) method, therapists listen to a child's pronunciation of certain phonemes and phoneme pairs in specified words and judge the child's stage of speech development. Healthcare-associated infections, while preventable, result in increased morbidity and mortality in nursing home (NH) residents. Frontline personnel, such as certified nursing assistants (CNAs), are crucial to successful implementation of infection prevention and control (IPC) practices. The purpose of this study was to explore barriers to implementing and maintaining IPC practices for NH CNAs as well as to describe strategies used to overcome these barriers. We conducted a multi-site qualitative study of NH personnel important to infection control. This paper presents the findings of a qualitative assessment aimed at exploring knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding family planning and factors that influence the need for and use of modern contraceptives. A descriptive exploratory study was conducted with married women and men aged between 15 and 40. Overall, 24 focus group discussions were conducted with male and female participants in three provinces of Pakistan. The findings reveal that the majority knew about some modern contraceptive methods, but the overall contraceptive use was very low. OBJECTIVE:

To assess the sensitivity and specificity of ultrasonography in differentiating causes of acute right lower quadrant pain in women of child-bearing age by taking surgical outcome as the gold standard.

METHODS:

The descriptive analytical study was conducted at PNS Shifa Hospital, Karachi, from July to December 2008, and comprised female patients of child-bearing age who presented with acute right lower quadrant pain and underwent surgery after ultrasonography. SPSS 10 was used for statistical analysis.

Integrin α6β4 is a cellular adhesion molecule that binds to laminins in the extracellular matrix and nucleates the formation of hemidesmosomes. During carcinoma progression, integrin α6β4 is released from hemidesmosomes, where it can then signal to facilitate multiple aspects of tumor progression including sustaining proliferative signaling, tumor invasion and metastasis, evasion of apoptosis, and stimulation of angiogenesis. The integrin achieves these ends by cooperating with growth factor receptors including EGFR, ErbB-2, and c-Met to amplify downstream pathways such as PI3K, AKT, MAPK, and the Rho family small GTPases. A characteristic of innovative strategy is leader openness to change. Leader demographical research in for-profit organizations has yielded valuable insight into leader openness to change. For LHD leaders, the nature of the association between leader demographic and organizational characteristics on leader openness to change is unknown. Intrapersonal competencies form the foundation of one’s development, and they are fundamental qualities of leadership competences. Four types of intelligence are highlighted in the literature of positive psychology: intelligence quotient (IQ), emotional intelligence quotient (EQ), adversity quotient (AQ) and spiritual intelligence quotient (SQ). It is argued that these competences are important in a service leader. Through this lecture, it is expected that students will understand the basic concepts and the importance of different intrapersonal competencies (IQ, EQ, AQ and SQ). เหตุผลของการทำวิจัย : การใช้เวลาเรียนที่มากเกินไปของเด็กที่อยู่ในช่วงวัยประถมศึกษาตอนปลายเป็นปัจจัยสำคัญประการหนึ่งที่ส่งผลต่อสุขภาพจิตของเด็กซึ่งมีการแสดงออกผ่านพฤติกรรม ดังนั้น จึงได้ทำการศึกษาการแสดงออกด้านปัญหาพฤติกรรมของเด็กโดยทำการศึกษาในเด็กที่เรียนกวดวิชาและไม่เรียนกวดวิชาวัตถุประสงค์ : เพื่อศึกษาการแสดงออกทางด้านปัญหาพฤติกรรมของเด็กประถมศึกษาตอนปลาย ศึกษาความแตกต่างของการแสดงออกทางด้านปัญหาพฤติกรรมของเด็กที่เรียนกวดวิชากับเด็กที่ไม่เรียนกวดวิชา รวมถึงศึกษาปัจจัยที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการแสดงออกทางด้านปัญหาพฤติกรรมของเด็กที่เรียนกวดวิชาชั้นประถมศึกษาตอนปลายรูปแบบการวิจัย : การศึกษานี้เป็นการวิจัยเชิงพรรณนาศึกษา ณ เวลาใดเวลาหนึ่งสถานที่ทำการศึกษา : โรงเรียนในสังกัดสำนักงานคณะกรรมการการศึกษาขั้นพื้นฐาน (สพฐ.)เขตกรุงเทพมหานครตัวอย่างและวิธีการ : ประชากรที่ศึกษาคือ เด็กที่กำลังศึกษาอยู่ในระดับชั้นประถมศึกษาตอนปลาย ในโรงเรียนในสังกัดสำนักงานคณะกรรมการศึกษาขั้นพื้นฐานเขตกรุงเทพมหานคร จำนวน 422 คน ทำการเก็บข้อมูลโดยใช้แบบสอบถามข้อมูลส่วนบุคคล แบบสอบถามพฤติกรรมการกวดวิชาและแบบประเมินการแสดงออกทางพฤติกรรม (The strengths and difficultiesquestionnaire (SDQ) ฉบับภาษาไทย) และวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลโดยใช้Pearson correlation, independent t-test, one way ANOVA และMultiple Regression Analysis ตามความเหมาะสมผลการศึกษา : จากการประเมินการแสดงออกทางพฤติกรรม (The strengthsanddifficulties questionnaire: SDQ) โดยผู้ปกครองและเด็กพบความชุกของปัญหาพฤติกรรมร้อยละ 17.5 และ 25.8 ตามลำดับ เมื่อใช้เกณฑ์การเรียนกวดวิชาพบว่าเด็กที่เรียนกวดวิชากับเด็กที่ไม่เรียนกวดวิชามีปัญหาพฤติกรรมไม่แตกต่างกัน และพบว่าความชุกของปัญหาพฤติกรรมมีค่าใกล้เคียงกับความชุกของปัญหาพฤติกรรมในเด็กทั่วไป แสดงให้เห็นว่าการเรียนกวดวิชาไม่ได้เป็นปัจจัยทีสำคัญของการเกิดปัญหาพฤติกรรมในเด็ก และปัจจัยที่มีความสัมพันธ์กับปัญหาพฤติกรรมจากการประเมินของเด็ก ได้แก่ เพศ (p <0.05) และผลการเรียน (p <0.05) จากการประเมินของผู้ปกครอง ได้แก่ สถานภาพสมรสของบิดามารดา (p <0.01) การศึกษาของบิดามารดา (p <0.01) และผลการเรียน (p<0.01)สรุป : ปัญหาพฤติกรรมของเด็กชั้นประถมศึกษาตอนปลายโดยรวมอยู่ในระดับใกล้เคียงกับปัญหาพฤติกรรมของเด็กทั่วไป และเด็กที่เรียนกวดวิชากับเด็กที่ไม่เรียนกวดวิชามีปัญหาพฤติกรรมที่ไม่แตกต่างกัน โดยมีปัจจัยที่เกี่ยวข้องคือ เพศ สถานภาพสมรสของบิดามารดาการศึกษาของบิดามารดาและผลการเรียน.

Drawing from space technology to measure star temperature, we developed a noninvasive sensor to passively track thermal profiles in tissues well below the skin (>5cm). Ultra-low noise amplifiers combined with ultralow-loss switches in the 1- 2GHz band produce a high sensitivity multiband microwave radiometer. Due to the complex multilayer anatomy of human head, multiple sensing bands are needed to reconstruct the temperature of deep brain tissue. This is achieved by using a digitally controlled filter bank. The Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi, expresses RevA and numerous outer surface lipoproteins during mammalian infection. As an adhesin that promotes bacterial interaction with fibronectin, RevA is poised to interact with the extracellular matrix of the host. To further define the role(s) of RevA during mammalian infection, we created a mutant that is unable to produce RevA. The mutant was still infectious to mice, although it was significantly less well able to infect cardiac tissues. Complementation of the mutant with a wild-type revA gene restored heart infectivity to wild-type levels. Additionally, revA mutants led to increased evidence of arthritis, …

This essay begins by proposing that muscle weakness of old age from sarcopenia is due in large part to reduced capillary density in the muscles, as documented in 9 reports of aged persons and animals. Capillary density (CD) is determined by local levels of various angiogenic factors, which also decline in muscles with aging, as reported in 7 studies of old persons and animals. In this study, using an immunoprecipitation coupled with mass spectrometry approach, we have identified the E3 ubiquitin ligase Trim21 as an interacting partner of IFI35 and Nmi. We found that this interaction leads to K63-linked ubiquitination on K22 residue of Nmi, but not IFI35. Using domain deletion analysis, we found that the interaction is mediated via the coiled-coil domain of Nmi and the carboxyl-terminal SPRY domain of Trim21. Furthermore, we show that depletion of Trim21 leads to significantly reduced interaction of Nmi with IFI35, which results in the abrogation of the negative regulatory function of the Nmi-IFI35 complex on innate …

STUDY OBJECTIVE:

The study objective is to assess changes in treatment of uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) after implementation of recommendations based on national guidelines and local resistance rates.

METHODS:

This preintervention and postintervention study included patients discharged home from the emergency department (ED) with an uncomplicated UTI at a 439-bed teaching hospital. Emergency department prescribers were educated on how local antimicrobial resistance rates impact UTI practice guidelines. Empiric treatment according to recommendations was assessed as the primary outcome. Agreement between chosen therapy and isolated pathogen susceptibility was compared before and after education. BACKGROUND: Albumin treatment of ischemic stroke was associated with cardiopulmonary adverse events in previous studies and a low incidence of intracranial hemorrhage. We sought to describe the neurological and cardiopulmonary adverse events in the ALIAS Part 2 Multicenter Trial.

METHODS: Ischemic stroke patients, aged 18-83 and a baseline NIHSS ≥ 6, were randomized to treatment with ALB or saline control within 5 hours of stroke onset. Neurological adverse events included symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage, hemicraniectomy, neurological deterioration and neurological death. Cardiopulmonary adverse events included pulmonary edema/congestive heart failure, acute coronary syndromes, atrial fibrillation, pneumonia and pulmonary thromboembolism.

The new Center for the Advancement of Pharmacy Education (CAPE) Educational Outcomes were discussed as well as current efforts within pharmacy education in LGBTQ health education. The speakers also addressed barriers to LGBTQ education and practice along with potential solutions.

By way of the Compassionate Care Act of 2014, New York has become the 23^rd state to create a process that will permit patients suffering from a “serious condition” to receive medical marijuana (or “cannabis”). Among those, it is the second state to prohibit the crude delivery system of smoking (Minnesota), and the third to involve pharmacists in the dispensing process (Connecticut and Minnesota). Because virtually every practicing pharmacist in New York will be caring for patients receiving some form of cannabinoid therapy, it is important to discuss the basic outlines established by the law and regulations.
