This brief examines Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) in Egypt. Findings suggest that expansion of ECCE is a good investment. Providing kindergarten to all Egyptian children, and particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, could be an important step toward greater equality, efficiency, and attainment in the education system.

Abstract: The American Osteopathic Association House of Delegates Resolution 205 recommends “increased awareness of depression amongst U.S. Medical students” due to the increasing body of research describing the rise of depression, burn-out and suicide ideation among medical students. There is consequently a need to understand mental health issues as a component of professional development. Background: The focus of the current studies was to determine the relationship between the molecular mechanisms interconnecting autophagy and apoptosis following Chlamydia pneumoniae infection in neuronal cells. Dysfunctions in apoptosis and autophagy have been implicated in the neurodegeneration associated with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Autophagy in AD pathogenesis has been shown to play a role in amyloid processing through the endosomal-lysosomal system. Apoptosis may contribute to the neuronal cell loss observed in AD; however, there is limited evidence of the apoptotic process proceeding to terminal completion. Interviews with 32 community behavioral health providers elicited perceived benefits and barriers of using electronic health records. Themes identified were (a) quality of care, (b) privacy and security, and (c) delivery of services. Benefits to quality of care were mentioned by 100% of the providers, and barriers by 59% of providers. Barriers involving privacy and security concerns were mentioned by 100% of providers, and benefits by 22%. Barriers to delivery of services were mentioned by 97% of providers, and benefits by 66%. Most providers (81%) expressed overall positive support for electronic behavioral health records.

Artemisinin-based combination therapies are the most effective drugs to treat Plasmodium falciparum malaria. Reduced sensitivity to artemisinin monotherapy, coupled with the emergence of parasite resistance to all partner drugs, threaten to place millions of patients at risk of inadequate treatment of malaria. Recognizing the significance and immediacy of this possibility, the Fogarty International Center and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of the U.S. National Institutes of Health convened a conference in November 2010 to bring together the diverse array of stakeholders responding to the growing threat of artemisinin resistance, including scientists from malarious countries in peril. Phenotypic and genotypic diversity of forty-two Pasteurella multocida isolates from geese were characterized by analysis of their capsular type, Heddleston serotype, biotype, fimbrial gene allele type, comparative outer membrane protein (OMP) electrophoresis patterns, and were analyzed using PCR for the presence of virulence-associated genes (toxA, tbpA, pfhA, hgbA, hgbB, nanH, nanB, fimA, hsf-1, and pmHAS). A sequence comparison of the thdF and rpoB housekeeping genes of twenty representative P. multocida strains from three different OMP groups demonstrated that seventeen strains were closely related phylogenetically to previously published strains of P. multocida subsp. multocida and P. multocida subsp. gallicida, and only …

Understanding the evolution of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) envelope during disease progression can provide tremendous insights for vaccine development, and simian-human immunodeficiency virus (SHIV) infection of nonhuman primate provides an ideal platform for such studies. A newly developed clade C SHIV, SHIV-1157ipd3N4, which was able to infect rhesus macaques, closely resembled primary HIV-1 in transmission and pathogenesis, was used to infect several pig-tailed macaques. One of the infected animals subsequently progressed to AIDS, whereas one remained a nonprogressor. Enteroviruses like coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) are common suspects in myocarditis/dilated cardiomyopathy patients. Autoimmunity has been proposed as an underlying mechanism, but direct evidence of its role is lacking. To delineate autoimmune response in CVB3 myocarditis, we used IA^k dextramers for cardiac myosin heavy chain (Myhc)-α 334–352. We have demonstrated that myocarditis-susceptible A/J mice infected with CVB3 generate Myhc-α-reactive CD4 T cells and such a repertoire was absent in naïve mice as measured by proliferative response to Myhc-α 334–352 and IA^k dextramer staining. Hot melt extrusion (HME) was evaluated as a processing technology for the manufacture of immediate as well as controlled release formulations for oral delivery of two model compounds. For immediate release applications lower molecular weight grades of Hydroxypropyl cellulose polymers, EF and ELF, were utilized as carrier matrices to form solid solutions of a poorly soluble compound, Ketoprofen (KPR). Thermal characterization techniques were used to confirm thermal stability, miscibility and setting up processing conditions for extrusion. Objectives: Despite the comuse of off-label prescribing in the US, no research has been conducted to understand the impact of off-label prescribing on patient decision making. This study sought to measure the impact on trust in physicians, intentions of involvement in the decision making, beliefs about the drug, and initial compliance intentions in elderly and nonelderly populations. Methods. This study was designed to assess the effects of off-label prescribing using a 2 × 2 × 2 design. Using five risk factors (blood pressure, high density lipoprotein (HDL-C), triglycerides (TG), fasting blood glucose, and waist circumference) individuals with three or more risk factors are classified as having Metabolic Syndrome. Objective: To assess quality of care provided to Medicaid beneficiaries using medication use-related quality indicators. Methods: This study is a retrospective analysis of 2006 & 2007 Medicaid administrative claims data from 45 states and DC. Eleven medication use-related measures (adherence/persistence and standard of care) from the AHRQ initial core set were included. A composite measure of medication use-related quality was also created. Patient case-mix adjusted measure scores were computed using hierarchical logistic regression models. Research has shown decreased pain sensitivity (hypoalgesia) during and following maximal and sub-maximal isometric exercise (Koltyn, 2002). Research on fibromyalgia patients however has shown the same exercises increase pain sensitivity (hyperalgesia) (Staud, Robinson, & Price, 2005; Kosek, Ekholm, & Hansson, 1996). The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of exercise on pressure pain thresholds (PPT) in the presence and absence of delayed-onset muscle soreness (DOMS) within the ipsilateral (contracting) and contralateral quadriceps muscle and plurisegmental finger.
