Road Construction As A Facilitator For Dengue Fever Transmission, Kate Billups Apr 2012

Road Construction As A Facilitator For Dengue Fever Transmission, Kate Billups

Environmental Studies Senior Seminar Projects

Although I plan to focus on the impact of road construction in tropical and subtropical regions on the spread and contraction of dengue fever, I hope to use this focus as a model that could help to create policies that would mitigate other diseases spread through insect contact. In places that road and railway construction have already become a part of the permanent foundation, medical infrastructure should be put into place to ensure that populations at increased risk to contract dengue fever have access to medical care to diminish rates of dengue hemorrhagic fever.

Thickened Ascending Aortic Wall Mimicking Intramural Hematoma., Kentaro Yamane, Hitoshi Hirose, Benjamin A. Youdelman, James Diehl

Department of Surgery Faculty Papers

A 45-year-old Hispanic woman presented with a 3-day history of ‘‘burning’’ chest pain. A computed tomo- graphic angiogram of the chest revealed the ascending aorta had a maximum diameter of 40 mm with marked thickening of the aortic wall (Figure 1), which we con- cluded was an intramural hematoma. On entering the pericardium, a milky-white plaque-like area on the ascending aorta was encountered (Figure 2). The ascending aorta was firm to palpation. Intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography and epiaortic ultra- sound showed a hyperechoic aortic wall with no find- ings compatible with aortic dissection. The ascending aorta had an irregular surface contour, …

Targeting Apoptosis For Optical Imaging Of Infection, Mathew L Thakur, Kaijun Zhang, Bishnuhari Paudyal, Devadhas Devakumar, Maria Y Covarrubias, Changpo Cheng, Brian D Gray, Eric Wickstrom, Koon Y Pak Apr 2012

Targeting Apoptosis For Optical Imaging Of Infection, Mathew L Thakur, Kaijun Zhang, Bishnuhari Paudyal, Devadhas Devakumar, Maria Y Covarrubias, Changpo Cheng, Brian D Gray, Eric Wickstrom, Koon Y Pak

Department of Radiology Faculty Papers

PURPOSE: Infection is ubiquitous and a major cause of morbidity and mortality. The most reliable method for localizing infection requires radiolabeling autologous white blood cells ex vivo. A compound that can be injected directly into a patient and can selectively image infectious foci will eliminate the drawbacks. The resolution of infection is associated with neutrophil apoptosis and necrosis presenting phosphatidylserine (PS) on the neutrophil outer leaflet. Targeting PS with intravenous administration of a PS-specific, near-infrared (NIR) fluorophore will permit localization of infectious foci by optical imaging.

METHODS: Bacterial infection and sterile inflammation were induced in separate groups (n = 5) …

Intra- And Inter-Examiner Reliability And Inter-Method Comparison In Physical Anthropometry And Photogrammetry, Nikolay Mollov

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Objective: Orthodontic treatment can often effect changes in the facial complex. In order to assess what those changes are, precise and reliable methods for measuring facial structures need to be used. While the techniques used for measuring have become increasingly more sophisticated they have also become more expensive and cumbersome for daily use. This study investigated the reliability of two methods, physical anthropometry and photogrammetry, that were inexpensive and relatively easy to set up.

Materials and Methods: Ten examiners measured a sample comprised of 20 dental students (10 male, 10 female) twice over three weeks. Eighteen measurements were acquired directly …

The Effect Of Extracorporeal Shock Wave (Esw) On Cementoblasts In Vitro, Joshua Barta Apr 2012

The Effect Of Extracorporeal Shock Wave (Esw) On Cementoblasts In Vitro, Joshua Barta

Master's Theses (2009 -)

Root resorption is an adverse consequence of orthodontic treatment, and currently no effective treatment method exists. Extracorporeal shock wave (ESW) has been applied to enhance angiogenesis, growth and healing of bone, but the effects of ESW on root resorption have not been studied. Cementoblasts are the cells responsible for forming and repairing cementum covering the dental root, and ESW may enhance this reparative process. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of ESW on cementoblasts to determine if ESW could potentially be used to treat root resorption. OCCM.30 cementoblasts were prepared in suspension at a density of …

Factors That Influence Nonadherence Outpatient Medical Follow-Up By African Americans With Hiv/Aids At An Outpatient Infectious Disease Clinic, Cynthia Burrell Banks

Health Services Research Dissertations

Human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immune deficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) does not discriminate among different races, ethnicities or genders; however, African Americans carry a larger burden related to the HIV epidemic than others (CDC, 2010c; Cunningham, Sanchez, Heller & Sohler, 2007; Mugavero, et al., 2009). Persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) who do not adhere to their medical regimen, including failure to maintain contact with their health care provider for health care monitoring, tend to have poorer health outcomes from the disease as compared to HIV/AIDS patients who adhere to their medical regimen (Cunningham et al., 2006; Lima et al., 2009). African Americans represent …

Exploring The Sibling Relationship Through Art Therapy: A Case Study, Laura Michalski Apr 2012

Exploring The Sibling Relationship Through Art Therapy: A Case Study, Laura Michalski

EVMS School of Health Professions Theses & Dissertations

The sibling relationship is said to be the longest relationship most individuals will share; therefore, it is surprising to see that most sibling research has been conducted within the confines of family studies with few studies focusing solely on the children’s bond with each another. Because the majority of the United States’ population has at least one sibling, this is a topic that calls for further research. Studies have shown that the quality of a relationship between siblings has the ability to influence individual growth, the sibling bond, social skills, self-esteem, depression, and aggression. However, when observing or conducting interventions …

A Review Of The Molecular And Genetic Foundations Of Ankylosing Spondylitis, Emily Dowlearn Apr 2012

A Review Of The Molecular And Genetic Foundations Of Ankylosing Spondylitis, Emily Dowlearn

Senior Honors Theses

Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is an autoimmune disease that occurs in an adult-onset or juvenile-onset form. The symptoms, severity, and prevalence of this disease vary according to sex, age, and race. AS has been strongly associated with the gene that codes for protein HLA-B27, a protein that misfolds in AS and causes stress on the Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER). The ER then sets off a chain of events leading to the observed AS symptoms. Other mutant genes such as Interleukin 23R (IL23R) and ER Amino Peptidase 1 (ERAP1) have been associated with AS, though not as prominent as HLA-B27. AS is thought …
