Predator-Based Fear Conditioning: A Novel Approach To The Study Of The Neurobiology Of Memory, Joshua D. Halonen Apr 2012

Predator-Based Fear Conditioning: A Novel Approach To The Study Of The Neurobiology Of Memory, Joshua D. Halonen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This series of experiments developed novel paradigms involving the integration of conventional and ethologically relevant forms of reinforcement in the study of fear conditioning in rats. Experiment 1 compared the effects of foot shock, immobilization and predator exposure, alone and in combination, on the expression of conditioned fear memory and extinction. The combination of all 3 reinforcers produced a significantly stronger fear memory and greater resistance to extinction, compared to when each reinforcer was administered alone. Furthermore, whereas conditioning with foot shock, alone, resulted in rapid extinction of the fear memory, the combination of immobilization and cat exposure, or all …

Enhancing The Immune Response Through Ikkbeta-Induced Activation Of Nf-Kappab, Emily Hopewell Apr 2012

Enhancing The Immune Response Through Ikkbeta-Induced Activation Of Nf-Kappab, Emily Hopewell

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Nuclear factor-κB (NF-κB) is one of the main regulators of inflammatory and immune responses. It is a family of transcription factors composed of five members: RelA, RelB, cRel, NF-κB1 (p105/p50), and NF-κB2 (p100/p52). Homo- and hetero-dimers of family members are inhibited by inhibitor of &klappaB (IκB) family members and activated by IκB kinase (IKK) family members. The IKK family is comprised of IKKα, IKKΒ, and IKKγ. The focus of my dissertation delves into the role of NF-κB activation by IKKΒ in both an immunotherapy setting and its role in T cell mediated anti-tumor immune responses.

A central focus of immunotherapy …

Parallel Lives: Similarities Between The Lived Experiences Of Persons With Cancer And Hiv, Danielle Boyd '12

Honor Scholar Theses

Thave chosen to focus this analysis on the shared experiences of patients with the socially stigmatized and incurable illnesses of cancer and HIV. These people cannot have their patient experience ended by a nice little pill or vaccine. They must blindly put their hopes in painful treatment regimens that can offer only management of their condition. They often undergo the tremendously helpless experience of feeling one’s body decline. As their treatment or the illness itself progresses they must enlist the help of family and friends to help them with daily tasks. Obviously the shared experiences of these two patient populations …

In 2010, Vietnam had more than 2 million emigrants residing in countries such as: the United States, Australia, Canada, Germany, France, the Republic of Korea, Japan, and the United Kingdom (World Bank). This number of emigrants accounted for 2.5% of the whole domestic population. Also according to this date, the emigration rate of tertiary-educated population was 27.1% in 2000. Due to relatively high number of emigrants, Vietnam has experienced rapid growth in receipts of remittances recently. Hernandes-Cross (2005) reports that the amount of remittances sent to Vietnam from other countries reached USD $1.2 billion in 1999. By 2003, this number …

Cholesterol Levels And Cardiovascular Health Indicator Changes In A Holistic Health Treatment Program: An Archival Study, Carolyn Taylor Apr 2012

Cholesterol Levels And Cardiovascular Health Indicator Changes In A Holistic Health Treatment Program: An Archival Study, Carolyn Taylor

Capstone Research Projects

Approximately 16.3% of the adult population in the United States maintains elevated levels of total cholesterol, and the components of the cholesterol profile—HDL, LDL, and triglyceride levels, among others—are particular determinants of cardiovascular disease risk. High levels of LDL in particular are associated with coronary atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. Conversely, high levels of HDL remove cholesterol from the blood and aid in metabolism. The HDL/LDL ratio is considered a marker of carotid plaque and is specifically used as an indicator for cardiovascular disease risk. Traditional cholesterol control treatment utilizes statin therapy and antihypertensive medication; however, recent trends toward alternative methods …

Genetic Association Studies Of Copy-Number Variation: Should Assignment Of Copy Number States Precede Testing?, Patrick Breheny, Prabhakar Chalise, Anthony Batzler, Liewei Wang, Brooke L. Fridley

Biostatistics Faculty Publications

Recently, structural variation in the genome has been implicated in many complex diseases. Using genomewide single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) arrays, researchers are able to investigate the impact not only of SNP variation, but also of copy-number variants (CNVs) on the phenotype. The most common analytic approach involves estimating, at the level of the individual genome, the underlying number of copies present at each location. Once this is completed, tests are performed to determine the association between copy number state and phenotype. An alternative approach is to carry out association testing first, between phenotype and raw intensities from the SNP array …

Regulation Of Natural Killer Cells: Ship-1, 2b4, And Immunomodulation By Lenalidomide, Nicole Renee Fortenbery Apr 2012

Regulation Of Natural Killer Cells: Ship-1, 2b4, And Immunomodulation By Lenalidomide, Nicole Renee Fortenbery

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Natural Killer cells (NK) are critical components of the innate immune system. Often referred to by their morphology, these large granular lymphocytes (LGLs) are bone marrow-derived lymphocytes and can be found throughout the body. NK cells reside in the liver, lymph nodes, spleen, thymus, and mucosal-associated lymphoid tissues (MALT). Importantly, NK cells also circulate throughout the blood where they function as surveyors of the body and are armed to eliminate malignant, infected, damaged, or foreign cells.

NK cells function by a dual receptor system. That is, NK receptors are broadly categorized as inhibitory or activating. It is a fine balance, …

United States Public Health Resources

MicroRNA (miRNA) deregulation has been implicated in the pathogenesis of mantle cell lymphoma (MCL). Using a high-throughput quantitative real-time PCR platform, we performed miRNA profiling on cyclin D1- positive MCL (n=30) and cyclin D1-negative MCL (n=7) and compared them with small lymphocytic leukemia/lymphoma (SLL, n=12), aggressive B-cell lymphomas (n=138), normal B-cell subsets and stromal cells. We identified a 19-miRNA classifier which included six upregulated miRNAs (miR-135a, miR-708, miR-150, miR-363, miR-184, miR-342-5p) and 13 downregulated miRNAs, that was able to distinguish MCL from other aggressive lymphomas with >90% probability. Some of these upregulated miRNAs are highly expressed in naïve B-cells. MicroRNA …
