Adhesions occurring after initial surgery increase complications in secondary thyroid operations. Therefore use of anti-adhesive barriers may reduce complication rates of secondary thyroid operations. In this study, we investigated the efficacy of hyaluronic acid-carboxymethyl cellulose membrane (HA-CMC, Seprafilm®) and polylactic acid barrier film (PLA, Surgiwrap™) in reducing adhesions after thyroid surgery. To assess clinical features, etiology, and complications in term and near-term newborns who received exchange transfusion. Materials and methods: Infants with >=35 gestational weeks admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit in the first 30 days of life and underwent exchange transfusion due to severe hyperbilirubinemia between 2002 and 2008 were included. Clinical features, etiology of hyperbilirubinemia, and complications of exchange transfusion were assessed. Results: Exchange transfusion was performed 86 times in a total of 73 patients. Urginea maritima (Um) is a plant native to especially Turkey and the Mediterranean area. In this study, we investigated whether Um extract exerted cytotoxicity on cancer cells. Materials and methods: We made various extracts of Um. These extracts in varying concentrations were added to an A549 NSCLC cell culture, alone or with gemcitabine and/or cisplatin. Growth inhibition was tested by the MTT assay and an Annexin V-FITC apoptosis detection kit Results: The onion Um extract (1 µg/mL) was more cytotoxic than cisplatin (1 µg/mL), gemcitabine (1 nm/mL), and leaf Um extract (1 µg/mL) with P < 0.001, P = 0.097, and P < 0.001, respectively. The efficacy of Um extract was further improved by the addition of an antioxidant cocktail to an IC_{50} value of 0.02 µg/mL. Conclusion: Um extract has been shown for the first time to be a strong candidate for drug development in solid tumors. Our studies continue to further define the specific antitumor compound(s) in this extract.

The aim of this study was to produce of ex vivo oral mucosal equivalent. The continuous stratified layer of human oral keratinocytes was grown on a cadaveric human dermal matrix in a defined culture medium without a feeder layer. Materials and methods: Human oral keratinocytes from a keratinized oral mucosa biopsy specimen were enzymatically dissociated and cultured in a serum-free defined culture medium, "EpiLife" (Cascade Biologics, Portland, OR, USA), containing a low calcium concentration of 0.06 mM. To evaluate the performance of GDx parameters in the diagnosis of glaucoma by using information theory and compare the results obtained using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis, which is a traditional method. Materials and methods: Retinal nerve fiber layer thickness was measured in 270 eyes with glaucoma and 81 normal eyes with scanning laser polarimeter (NFA GDx version, 1.0.08), and 14 GDx parameters were calculated. To determine our setting's IDAI rates, infecting microorganisms, and their resistance patterns to achieve standardization and make comparisons among other Turkish and developed country hospitals all over the world. Materials and methods: The numbers of total patient days, ventilator days, central catheter days and, urinary catheter days in the ICUs were recorded and IDAI rates were calculated. Clinical specimens were obtained from patients, cultivated at appropriate culture media, and infecting microorganisms and resistance patterns were determined. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of these infections among pregnant women in Denizli province, and to review seroprevalences reported from different regions of Turkey. The present study was conducted to fulfill the objective of investigating the probability of an association between PON1 phenotype distribution and headache duration in patients suffering from MWoA. To investigate serum paraoxonase and arylesterase activities, and lipid hydroperoxide levels in pregnant women with iron deficiency anemia. Materials and methods: Paraoxonase and arylesterase activities, and lipid hydroperoxide levels were assessed for pregnant women with iron deficiency anemia (n = 50) and controls (n = 70). Serum basal and salt-stimulated paraoxonase, and arylesterase activities were measured spectrophotometrically. To examine the effect of smoking on normal buccal mucosa cytomorphologically. Materials and methods: Forty individuals aged between 40 and 60, comprising 23 smokers (14 male, 9 female) and 17 and non-smokers (10 male, 7 female), were included in the study. To analyze the frequency and distribution of coronary artery risk factors in the city of Rize and its surrounding areas. Materials and methods: This observational study included 452 patients (333 men, 119 women). In addition to demographic characteristics of the patients, conventional risk factors were also recorded. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence and affecting factors of Hepatitis B surface antigen (HbsAg), hepatitis C virus antibody (anti-HCV), anti human immunodeficiency virus (anti-HIV), and VDRL in blood donors in Mersin. Materials and methods: This was a retrospective, descriptive study. All blood centers in Mersin were included in the study. The medical records of 30,716 blood donors were evaluated. The aim of the present study was to examine the association between serum OPG levels and Behcet's disease (BD).
