The relationship between obesity and cancer screening varies by screening test, race, and gender. Most studies on cervical cancer screening found a negative association between increasing weight and screening, and this negative association was most consistent in white women. Recent literature on mammography reports no association with weight. However, some studies show a negative association in white, but not black, women. In contrast, obese/overweight men reported higher rates of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing. Comparison of prostate cancer screening, mammography, and Pap smears implies a gender difference in the relationship between screening behavior and weight. This study translated SiHLE (Sisters Informing, Healing, Living, and Empowering), a 12-hour Centers for Disease Control and Prevention evidence based group-level intervention for African American females 14-18 years of age, into a 2-hour computer-delivered individual-level intervention. A randomized controlled trial (n = 178) was conducted to examine the efficacy of the new Multimedia SiHLE intervention. Average condom-protected sex acts (proportion of vaginal sex acts with condoms, last 90 days) for sexually active participants receiving Multimedia SiHLE rose from M = 51% at baseline to M = 71% at 3-month follow-up (t = 2.06, p = .05); no statistically significant difference …

Yet, there is limited research regarding adolescent burns and the psychosocial aspect within their daily occupations. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the level of knowledge concerning OT roles in the school district setting that undergraduate education majors are receiving at Casper College.

Methodology: Data was collected from 57 participants through the use of a survey to identify pre-service teachers’ perception of occupational therapy and the education they have received in their coursework.

Results of this study indicate that undergraduate education majors at Casper College are receiving less than optimal instruction on the role of OT in school-based practice. Overall 91% of students polled indicated that they had not received education on OT …

Skeletal muscle fiber type composition has not been studied in the long-lived Ames dwarf mouse when compared to its wild-type counterpart. Hindlimb soleus skeletal muscle from two 3-month old dwarf and two 3-month old wild-type mice was analyzed for muscle fiber size, proportion of type I (slow-twitch) and type II (fast-twitch) muscle fibers, myonuclei content per muscle fiber, and total cross sectional area of the muscle. BRM is an ATPase component of the SWI/SNF complex that regulates chromatin remodeling and cell proliferation and is considered a tumor suppressor. In this study we characterized transcripts from the Smarca2 gene that encodes the BRM protein. We found that the human Smarca2 gene (hSmarca2), like its mouse counterpart (mSmarca2), also initiated a short transcript from intron 27 of the long transcript. We name the long and short transcripts as Smarca2-a and Smarca2-b, respectively. Like its human counterpart, mSmarca2-a also underwent alternative splicing at the 54-bp exon 29. Background: Intrinsically disordered proteins play important roles in various cellular activities and their prevalence was implicated in a number of human diseases. The knowledge of the content of the intrinsic disorder in proteins is useful for a variety of studies including estimation of the abundance of disorder in protein families, classes, and complete proteomes, and for the analysis of disorder-related protein functions. The above investigations currently utilize the disorder content derived from the per-residue disorder predictions. A combination of spectroscopic techniques including atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), was used to analyze the effect of chemically distinct agrochemicals (pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides) on the in vitro misfolding and aggregation of a presynaptic intrinsically disordered protein α-synuclein. Despite their differences in chemical properties, almost all the compounds screened affected the α-synuclein fibrillation in a concentration-dependent manner. The morphology of the aggregated α-synuclein was characterized by AFM and TEM techniques. In addition to typical fibrils abundantly found at the equilibrium phase, this analysis revealed the existence of a noticeable nonfibrillar fraction where α-synuclein was present …

Successful Rehabilitation Of A Recreational Endurance Runner: Initial Validation For The Bunkie Test, Jason Brumitt

This case report details the musculoskeletal evaluation and the successful rehabilitation of a 24-year-old female recreational distance runner who self-referred to physical therapy with an acute bout of low back pain (LBP). Her LBP was provoked during each distance run. The patient’s musculoskeletal evaluation revealed core weakness, especially on the left. A recently reported functional test, the Bunkie test, was administered as part of the physical evaluation. The scores from the Bunkie test correlated with other quantitative and qualitative findings. A therapeutic exercise program emphasizing core stabilization was prescribed. The patient was able to shortly return to running pain-free.

This study used an augmented version of Kirkpatrick’s four-level model of training criteria as a theoretical framework to evaluate a hybrid teaching approach to continuing education (CE) for physical therapists who treat patients with low back pain. This model provides a framework for relating changes in practitioner knowledge to changes in practice. Forty-three orthopedic physical therapists who attended a CE course on evidence-based practice participated in the study. The current study was designed to partially extend previous research (Nicholson, Kehle, Bray, & Heest, 2011; Rosenthal-Malek & Mitchell, 1997) by examining the effects of physical activity on the 1) attention span and 2) health-related quality of life (HRQoL) of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) children in Singapore. Male participants (N = 12) aged 2-6 years, diagnosed with ASD were randomly assigned to either a physical activity (experimental) or non-physical activity group (control).
