The objective of all studies evaluating retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) screening criteria has been to minimize the number of infants screened while missing no patients with ROP who required treatment. Studies supporting the recommendation that screening for ROP could be restricted to infants born at less than 30 weeks of gestation with birth weights of less than 1250 g have been reported recently, especially from Western countries. The authors present early results of feminizing genitoplasty procedures. Materials and methods: Medical records of 41 patients who underwent feminizing genitoplasty in between 2001 and 2009 were evaluated retrospectively. Results: Follow-up period was 1 month to 7.5 years. Clitorolabial cosmesis was good in all patients except one. Neither clitoral necrosis nor enlargement was noted in postoperative period. The most common complication observed was vaginal stenosis. For 7 patients with severe stenosis, reoperations are planned at puberty. Conclusion: One-stage or staged genitoplasty is performed for disorders of sexual development (DSD) patients. Although results of clitoroplasty are satisfactory, reoperation rates due to …

Netherton syndrome (NS) is a rare genodermatosis characterized by autosomal recessive inheritance pattern, unknown etiology, ichthyosiform cutaneous changes, atopic diathesis, and alterations in the hair shaft. As a result of aging coupled with immune deficiency, clinical symptoms may vary. Herein, we present 2 siblings with the characteristic cutaneous symptoms of NS, albeit with some differences between the siblings. Acute gastric volvulus occurs when the stomach or a part of it rotates more than 180 degrees. It is a potentially life-threatening entity and most cases of gastric volvulus occur in association with eventration of left hemidiaphragm or a hiatal hernia. Gastric volvulus is a rare condition and presents with nonspecific epigastric pain and vomiting, and therefore may be missed. Chest x-ray and CT can help the diagnosis. Catheter-related bloodstream infection (CR-BSI) is considered as an important complication of hemodialysis catheters. The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate the incidence and risk factors of temporary hemodialysis catheter-related bloodstream infection. Materials and methods: Prospective data related to temporary hemodialysis catheters inserted in our institution were collected for duration of three years. The risk factors of CR-BSI of patients between the CR-BSI group and the control group were compared. Repetitive transient activation of the parasympathetic and sympathetic systems in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) constitutes the basis for development of cardiac arrhythmias. We aimed to examine the prevalence of arrhythmias in OSAS. Materials and methods: Eighty-eight patients with suspected OSAS were included in the study. Polysomnography was performed overnight in all patients. Patients with apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) < 5 were considered OSAS negative, while patients with AHI >= 5 were OSAS positive. Studies have indicated that neonatal exposure to deltamethrin, even at relatively low doses, results in behavioral and neurological changes. To determine the prevalence of Trichomonas vaginalis (Tv) among women that presented to hospitals in the Kermanshah district of Iran in 2006 and 2007. Materials and methods: This retrospective study included 33.690 women that presented to primary pathology laboratories in Kermanshah. Vaginal and cervical swabs were collected, and then stained with Papanicolaou (Pap) stain. Alzheimer's disease (Alzheimer disease, AD), the most common cause of dementia, is an acquired cognitive and behavioral impairment of sufficient severity that markedly interferes with social and occupational functioning. This study has investigated the sources of resilience in a sample of Palestinians who experienced the first Intifada and are now studying in the United States. The study found that family and community support, the pursuit of an education, and participation in artistic activities all contribute to individual resilience among Palestinians. In addition, political awareness and activity are another source of resilience, because they help individuals living under the Occupation to find meaning in their life and make sense of their struggles. Phenomenology Of Embodied Dreamwork With Puerto Rican Women: A Dissertation, Lourdes F. Brache-Tabar

The author investigated the experience of embodied dreamwork. Participants were eight Puerto Rican women who were chronically ill, of low socioeconomic status, who lived in Boston. The data were analyzed using transcendental phenomenology. Each participant engaged in one embodied dreamwork–unstructured interview session lasting approximately 1.5 hours. In addition, each participant drew a picture of how she felt after the dreamwork interview. This snowball, purposive sample gave detailed information about how they experienced embodied dreamwork. The participants’ statements were grouped into themes: (a) sense of place—environment, surroundings, spatiality; (b) the players—self, others; (c) plot; (d) in the sea of emotions—naming affective …

Src kinase activity is regulated by the interaction of SH3 domain with protein sequences that are rich in proline residues. Identification of more potent SH3 domain binding ligands that can regulate Src kinase activity is a subject of major interest. Conformationally constrained peptides have been previously used for improving the binding potency of the Src SH2 domain binding peptide ligands and peptide substrates of the substrate-binding site of Src. A series of peptide analogues of Ac-VSLARRPLPPLP (1, Ac-VSL-12, Kd = 0.34 M) were synthesized by introducing conformational constraints to improve the binding affinity towards the Src SH3 domain. Hydatid disease is a frequently encountered entity in endemic areas and constitutes a serious health problem. The lung is the second most commonly affected organ after the liver. In three of four cases of pulmonary hydatid cyst, the cyst is solitary. The early phase after primary infection is always asymptomatic. Primary symptoms in patients with pulmonary cystic echinococcosis include cough, fever, and chest pain. The clinical and radiological manifestations for the hydatid cyst in the lung depend on the integrity of the cyst. Bronchial fistulization is an important event in the evolution of the cyst. We examined the relationship between internalized stigma and changes in vocational function. Persons with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder (n=78) were assessed at baseline and 5 months after vocational rehabilitation. Internalized stigma and cognitive–behavioral treatment predicted change in vocational functioning, supporting the view that internalized stigma compromises vocational outcomes.

Childhood asthma is a critical public health problem of urban centers in the United States and other industrialized nations. Population-based and laboratory research studies indicate that psychosocial stress differentially affects asthma expression. Witnessing or experiencing community violence is a psychosocial stressor that results in long-term biological changes that may in turn contribute to asthma morbidity. This is a review of the literature that examines the exposure to violence as a psychosocial stressor that is independently associated with asthma morbidity even after adjustment for income, housing, and other adverse life events.
