The Lack Of An Inherent Membrane Targeting Signal Is Responsible For The Failure Of The Matrix (M1) Protein Of Influenza A Virus To Bud Into Virus-Like Particles, Dan Wang, Aaron Harmon, Jing Jin, David H. Francis, Jane Christopher-Hennings, Eric A. Nelson, Ronald C. Montelaro, Feng Li
Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications
The matrix protein (M1) of influenza A virus is generally viewed as a key orchestrator in the release of influenza virions from the plasma membrane during infection. In contrast to this model, recent studies have indicated that influenza virus requires expression of the envelope proteins for budding of intracellular M1 into virus particles. Here we explored the mechanisms that control M1 budding. Similarly to previous studies, we found that M1 by itself fails to form virus-like-particles (VLPs). We further demonstrated that M1, in the absence of other viral proteins, was preferentially targeted to the nucleus/perinuclear region rather than to the …
Reminiscence Of An Elderly Woman: An Artistic Inquiry, Cathy Gamby-Weideman
Reminiscence Of An Elderly Woman: An Artistic Inquiry, Cathy Gamby-Weideman
Creative Arts Therapies Theses
This thesis explores the clinical value to the elderly population of combining reminiscence and dance. This five month collaboration between a recently widowed elderly female and a dance/movement therapy intern culminated in a 13 minute choreographed dance performance. Themes that emerged during this art-based study were her relationship with her husband, her role as his primary caregiver and her grief after his death. Eric Erikson identifies integrity vs. despair as the struggle or crisis to be grappled with in the last stage of human development, old age. This theoretical framework has been incorporated in this study.
Dance/Movement Therapy And Responsive Classroom: A Theoretical Synthesis, Shawna L. Solsvig
Dance/Movement Therapy And Responsive Classroom: A Theoretical Synthesis, Shawna L. Solsvig
Creative Arts Therapies Theses
This theoretical synthesis combines concepts from Chacian dance/movement therapy and the Responsive Classroom approach to teaching and learning, and suggests a proactive behavioral management style for dance/movement therapists that incorporates aspects from these two frameworks. For this synthesis, Chacian dance/movement therapy and Responsive Classroom techniques were adapted and implemented. Through combining these two methods, the researcher suggests a unique treatment model as a way to prevent and confront violent and aggressive behaviors of children that present in a dance/movement therapy session.

Inviting Consciousness: Authentic Movement And The Injured Brain, Ande Welling
Creative Arts Therapies Theses
This thesis is guided by curiosity regarding the possibility of incorporatingAuthentic Movement into a neuro-rehabilitation treatment program. Using Authentic Movement as part of one client's dance/movement therapy treatment, this qualitative case study explores and documents how mover consciousness, the first layer of Authentic Movement, develops and is taught to one client surviving brain injury. Data includes the researcher's journal entries, embodied knowledge, and notes written using a technique called embodied writing, as well as client journal entries, verbal responses, and the art work produced during each session. Data were analyzed by reviewing the material, embodying the data in my personal …
A Comparison Of The Wishes Of Hospitalized Patients Regarding Prayer From Healthcare Professionals In Religious Based And Non Religious Based Healthcare Facilities, Jessica White, Tracy Polley
A Comparison Of The Wishes Of Hospitalized Patients Regarding Prayer From Healthcare Professionals In Religious Based And Non Religious Based Healthcare Facilities, Jessica White, Tracy Polley
Graduate Research Projects
Aim
This paper examines patient’s desire for prayer from their health care providers and looks at the difference in prayer frequency between religious and non-religious based hospitals.
Background
Continued debate surrounds this concept: How much spiritual care should be integrated into the medical field? Many theorists have included spirituality as an integral part to holistic care. Therefore healthcare providers should address prayer and spirituality.
Method
A convenience sampling of 93 patients was taken from a government and a religious based hospital in southeastern Tennessee. The questionnaire used was specifically designed for the study. Information collected included demographics, religious affiliation, habits …

Psychology Of Sport Injury : A Holistic Approach To Rehabilitating The Injured Athlete, Jennifer Jordan Utley
Psychology Of Sport Injury : A Holistic Approach To Rehabilitating The Injured Athlete, Jennifer Jordan Utley
Athletic Training Collection
Sports medicine practitioners must consider both physical and mental aspects of injury to fully rehabilitate the injured athlete. The psychological distress that follows injury has been well documented and calls for a change in the rehabilitation of injured athletes.1-3 With the recent emergence of sport psychology and the emphasis on competitive sport in the United States and beyond, psychological skills are no longer solely utilized by the elite athlete; college and high school athletes are gaining instruction in the use of psychological skills from sport psychologists, coaches, and fellow teammates. Psychological skills have been shown to be effective in …
Organophosphorus Pesticides Decrease M2 Muscarinic Receptor Function In Guinea Pig Airway Nerves Via Indirect Mechanisms, Becky J. Proskocil, Donald A. Bruun, Charles M. Thompson, Allison D. Fryer, Pamela J. Lein
Organophosphorus Pesticides Decrease M2 Muscarinic Receptor Function In Guinea Pig Airway Nerves Via Indirect Mechanisms, Becky J. Proskocil, Donald A. Bruun, Charles M. Thompson, Allison D. Fryer, Pamela J. Lein
Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications
Background: Epidemiological studies link organophosphorus pesticide (OP) exposures to asthma, and we have shown that the OPs chlorpyrifos, diazinon and parathion cause airway hyperreactivity in guinea pigs 24 hr after a single subcutaneous injection. OP-induced airway hyperreactivity involves M2 muscarinic receptor dysfunction on airway nerves independent of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition, but how OPs inhibit neuronal M2 receptors in airways is not known. In the central nervous system, OPs interact directly with neurons to alter muscarinic receptor function or expression; therefore, in this study we tested whether the OP parathion or its oxon metabolite, paraoxon, might decrease M2 receptor function on …

The Mechanisms Of Muscle Hypertrophy And Their Application To Resistance Training, Brad Schoenfeld
The Mechanisms Of Muscle Hypertrophy And Their Application To Resistance Training, Brad Schoenfeld
Graduate Theses
The quest to increase lean body mass is widely pursued by those who lift weights. Research is lacking, however, as to the best approach for maximizing exercise-induced muscle growth. Bodybuilders generally train with moderate loads and fairly short rest intervals that induce high amounts of metabolic stress. Powerlifters, on the other hand, routinely train with high intensity loads and lengthy rest periods between sets. While both groups are known to display impressive muscularity, it is not clear which method is superior for hypertrophic gains, or whether other training methods may perhaps show superiority. Therefore, the purpose of this proposed paper …
Language Barriers In Health Care, Lauren Houle
Language Barriers In Health Care, Lauren Houle
Senior Honors Projects
Language barriers in health care are a growing concern for patients and health care providers. According to the 2000 U. S. Census, there is an increasing number of people who spoke a language other than English at home. This number increased from 14 percent (31.8 million) in 1990 to 18 percent (47 million) in 2000 (Shin & Bruno, 2003). Studies have shown that patients with limited English proficiency have less access to care, poorer adherence to treatment regimens and consequently contribute to increased health disparities. This issue is of particular importance for nurses due to the intimate contact and need …
Hospital Performance Evaluation In Uganda: A Super-Efficiency Data Envelope Analysis Model, Bruno Yawe
Hospital Performance Evaluation In Uganda: A Super-Efficiency Data Envelope Analysis Model, Bruno Yawe
Zambia Social Science Journal
Standard Data Envelope Analysis models result in a large fraction of the observations becoming 100 percent efficient. The article measures the technical efficiency of 25 district referral hospitals from three regions of Uganda over the 1999-2003 period. It applies a super-efficiency Data Envelopment Analysis model. The application of a super-efficiency model was occasioned by the failure of standard data envelopment analysis models to rank the efficient set of hospitals which attain an efficiency score of unity. The results of the standard data envelopment analysis models indicate the existence of different degrees of technical and scale inefficiency in Uganda’s district referral …

This research reports immune function and health outcomes in women with depression, as compared with a nondepressed control group. Using Psychoneuroimmunolgy theory and a descriptive comparison design, scores on the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were used to divide 40 non-hospitalized Caucasian women between the ages of 18 and 65 years into either the control or depression comparison group. Women with depression were found to report significantly more incidences of illness over the previous two months and they were found to have significantly more indicators of illness at the time of the exam as compared to the controls. However, contrary to …

Rural Health Clinics
Key Findings: Approximately 6% of independent and 2% of provider-based RHCs offer mental health services. 38% of study RHCs reported their mental health services were not profitable but continued to provide them in response to community and patient needs. An important factor in the development of RHC mental health services is the presence of a local "champion" who spearheads the development effort.

Acute systemic toxicity studies are carried out in many sectors in which synthetic chemicals are manufactured or used and are among the most criticized of all toxicology tests on both scientific and ethical grounds. A review of the drivers for acute toxicity testing within the pharmaceutical industry led to a paradigm shift whereby in vivo acute toxicity data are no longer routinely required in advance of human clinical trials. Based on this experience, the following review was undertaken to identify (1) regulatory and scientific drivers for acute toxicity testing in other industrial sectors, (2) activities aimed at replacing, reducing, or …

in Vitro Research Models Collection
All of life’s great journeys start with a goal in mind! The 2007 NAS report, Toxicity Testing in the 21st Century – A Vision and A Strategy, has proposed a clear goal. This report envisions a not-so-distant future where all routine toxicity testing for environmental agents will be conducted in human cells in vitro evaluating perturbations of cellular responses in a suite of toxicity pathway assays. Dose response modeling would utilize computational systems biology models of the circuitry underlying each toxicity pathway; in vitro to in vivo extrapolations would use pharmacokinetic models, ideally physiologically based pharmacokinetic models, to predict human …

A key goal of cognitive neuroscience is to find simple and direct connections between brain and behaviour. However, fMRI analysis typically involves choices between many possible options, with each choice potentially biasing any brain-behaviour correlations that emerge. Standard methods of fMRI analysis assess each voxel individually, but then face the problem of selection bias when combining those voxels into a region-of-interest, or ROI. Multivariate pattern-based fMRI analysis methods use classifiers to analyse multiple voxels together, but can also introduce selection bias via data-reduction steps as feature selection of voxels, pre-selecting activated regions, or principal components analysis. We show here that …

BACKGROUND: Complications of renal failure may prevent timely evacuation of injured soldiers. Conventional renal replacement therapy is not available in forward surgical units. METHODS: Records of in-theater improvised peritoneal dialysis (IPD) in level III hospitals or forward surgical units in Iraq or Afghanistan were reviewed to determine the following: cause of renal failure and associated injuries; type of dialysate, peritoneal access, and exchange technique; and patient outcome. These data were used to propose method for IPD using commonly available materials. RESULTS: IPD is described in four patients. Abdominal or chest drains were used with either improvised dextrose-electrolyte solution or commercial …

Clinical practice of psychiatry has acquired role and responsibility which goes far beyond traditional expectations .Incident of suicide, particularly, is considered a high liability for then professionals, organizations and the consumer. It also remains a clinical issue which examines can we prevent suicide which in the system of care. Studies have shown about 1 in 6 psychologists or psychiatrist are likely to loose a patient due to suicide in a mean duration of 18-20 years practice. Repeatedly it has demonstrated that clinical skill training for risk assessment is the necessary for all professionals not only in mental health but also …
