The purpose of this thesis project was to identify the emotional experiences of women who are in recovery for addiction on a verbal and non-verbal level and determine if shame is a predominant emotion. Through the combination of phenomenological and clinical case study methodologies, this thesis examines the verbal disclosures and movement responses of women within dance/movement therapy groups, through video recording and journal entries. Content analysis resulted in the identification of primary themes, which included circumstances related to relationship and responsibility, shame related to responsibility, goals for their relationships and for self. This thesis is a heuristic examination of my experience of intuition as a new dance/movement therapist. The purpose of this investigation was to provide an inceptive inroad into the little explored but recently popular subject of intuition, specifically as it relates to dance/movement therapy and the use of the dance therapist’s intuition as a therapeutic resource. Creating a journal that captured my contemplation of intuition and my experiences of intuition, both in clinical dance/movement therapy work and in creative and personal experiences, was the primary method of data collection. The purpose of this research was to explore the dance/movement therapy intervention of mirroring within a Chacian modality and its effects on creating, maintaining, and deepening a therapeutic relationship between two women who are living with Alzheimer’s and the researcher/facilitator, a dance/movement therapy intern. This research project was part of an internship at an adult day center for people living with Alzheimer’s. Six, half-hour, videotaped dance/movement therapy sessions were devoted to this thesis study.

Children who have had severe early childhood experiences of neglect, abuse, and/or abrupt separation from their caregivers between the ages of six months and three years are at risk for developing reactive attachment disorder. In one form of reactive attachment disorder, known as the inhibited type, the child fails to initiate interactions and positively respond in social situations. The medical homes provisions of the Affordable Care Act offer a major opportunity to advance high quality, cost-efficient health care for children with asthma. This policy brief examines evolving national medical homes policy in a childhood asthma context. Following a brief background that examines childhood asthma and explores the origins and evolution of medical homes policy (a concept developed with children in mind), the brief then describes how the Affordable Care Act can advance the implementation of medical homes policies to improve health outcomes for children with asthma.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine the metabolic profile during the 2006 Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. Methods: One recreational male triathlete completed the race in 10:40:16. Before the race, linear regression models were established from both laboratory and field measures to estimate energy expenditure and substrate utilization. The subject was provided with an oral dose of (2)H(2)(18)O approximately 64 h before the race to calculate total energy expenditure (TEE) and water turnover with the doubly labeled water (DLW) technique. Research has shown that maximal exercise has a significant effect on cells of the immune system. Specifically, lymphocyte count increases during exercise and decreases to a value lower than baseline following an acute exhaustive bout of exercise. The overall lymphocyte response is well characterized, however, the ability of exercise to affect lymphocyte subfractions is unknown to our knowledge. The purpose of this study was to assess and evaluate the affects of a simulated tennis match across two sessions on lymphocyte subsets.

The use of chimpanzees in hepatitis C virus (HCV) research was examined in the report associated with this paper (1: Validity of the Chimpanzee Model), in which it was concluded that claims of past necessity of chimpanzee use were exaggerated, and that claims of current and future indispensability were unjustifiable. The Significance of Preattentive Visual Search (PAVS) in Glaucoma Methods: A novel test of PAVS, incorporating tests for flicker, motion displacement and orientation, presented on a computer monitor was developed for the detection and monitoring of glaucoma. Patients were required to detect a unique target from a background of 119 distractors. Normality was determined on the basis of patient response times measured using a two-alternative forced choice paradigm. Data were collected on 123 subjects, 41 with existing glaucoma, 41 glaucoma suspects, and 41 age-matched normals. Stress is an important feature of the lives of college students and can impact negatively on learning. The effectiveness of an in-class stress management intervention for improving course content retention was tested with a cross-over design in two introductory graduate biostatistics classes. Each class met one day per week for the duration of the semester, and was taught by the same instructor, following the same syllabus. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of caffeine supplementation on caffeine tolerant and caffeine naïve individual’s lymphocyte counts, apoptosis and migration levels. In addition, effects of exercise on post-caffeine ingestion lymphocyte counts, apoptosis and migration levels were determined. It was hypothesized that caffeine would alter the immune system cell counts, but that exercise would be able to restore the immune system to homeostasis. Seventeen Western Kentucky University students were tested (males n=7, females n=10; n=7: caffeine tolerant= 200mg or more per day group, n=9: caffeine naïve= 50mg or less per day group). Background: Abraham Groves worked as a general practitioner and surgeon in the small town of Fergus, Ontario, Canada. Several priority claims have been attributed to Groves’ life in surgery, including aseptic surgery (1874), appendectomy (1883) and the use of surgical gloves (1885). He was also an early practitioner of urological surgery. Objective: The purpose of this paper is to describe and objectively assess his contributions as a pioneer in urological surgery. This review focuses on the state-of-the-art of HP (3)He MRI and its application to clinical pulmonary research.
