This article offers an overview of the GAIN (Greater Awareness in Idaho Nurses) Project which seeks to produce nursing graduates who are competent in providing culturally competent care. A description of the course will describe how interdisciplinary pedagogies have been utilized to provide an integrated course utilizing experiential leaming through Service Learning. Results of assessment of student outcomes illustrate the effectiveness of the project in developing cultural competence among participants.

Public health nursing represents the foundation of the U.S. public health system, particularly in predominantly rural and frontier states. Increasing attention has recently been paid to strengthening the public health infrastructure and workforce in response to disaster preparedness concerns. Major concerns regarding the current and future shortage of public health nurses have been raised at the national and state levels (The Quad Council of Public Health Nursing Organizations, 2006; Health Resources Services Administration, 2005; Gehrke, 2007). While Tai Chi practice has dramatically increased across the U.S., its mechanism is unknown, and overall understanding of the phenomenon is lacking. The purpose of this study was to explore the experience of community-dwelling Tai Chi practitioners through a qualitative study, detailing its social and personal appeal, the reasons for their continued involvement, its symbolic meanings, and its impact on their lives. Utilizing the grounded theory method and dimensional analysis, in-depth interview data from 23 practitioners, aged 49-82 were audio-recorded, transcribed, coded and analyzed to derive a grounded theory. Criterion Validity Of The Wechsler Intelligence Scale For Children - Fourth Edition After Pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury, Jacobus Donders, Kelly Janke

The performance of 40 children with complicated mild to severe traumatic brain injury on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children - Fourth Edition (WISC-IV; Wechsler, 2003) was compared with that of 40 demographically matched healthy controls. Of the four WISC-IV factor index scores, only Processing Speed yielded a statistically significant group difference (p < .001) as well as a statistically significant negative correlation with length of coma (p < .01). Logistic regression, using Processing Speed to classify individual children, yielded a sensitivity of 72.50% and a specificity of 62.50%, with false positive and false negative rates both exceeding 30%. We conclude that Processing Speed has acceptable criterion validity in the evaluation of children with complicated mild to severe traumatic brain injury but that the WISC-IV should be supplemented with other measures to assure sufficient accuracy in the diagnostic process. © 2008 Copyright © The International Neuropsychological Society 2008.

The purpose of this quantitative, descriptive study is to explore and describe Emergency Department nurses' perceived barriers to research utilization. The setting of this study takes place in the Emergency Department of a community hospital in North Central Texas. The BARRIERS to Research Utilization Scale (Funk, Champagne, Wiese, & Tornquist, 1991a) was the questionnaire used in this study. Sixteen completed questionnaires were obtained. The greatest barrier identified by this sample was that nurses do not feel they have enough authority to affect change, which is the same primary barrier found by Funk, Champagne, Wiese, and Tornquist in 1991. Post Infarct cerebellar cognitive affective syndrome is a rare disorder, characterized by cognitive impairment in the domains of memory, language, visuo-spatial functioning and affect after cerebellar stroke. We report a case of young female who developed mood alteration and cognitive disturbance following isolated cerebellar infarct. We, therefore, advocate a potential role of cerebellum in regulation of cognition and behaviour in humans.

Introduction:The objective of the study was to determine the trends of cancer cervix in Karachi South during an eight (1995-2002) year period. Methododology: Cancer cervix cases recorded at Karachi Cancer Registry during 1st January 1995 to 31st December 2002 were analyzed. Trends were studied by analyzing the age standardized incidence rates (ASR)s in 2 time periods, 1995-97 and 1998-2002.

Results:

University students aged 17 to 24 years of age are prone to many risk factors.

OBJECTIVES: Identify risk factors related to exploring sexuality and characteristics of consumption of psychoactive substances in students attending medical school.

METHODS: 465 Medical students from Santa Casa of São Paulo Faculty of Medical Sciences (FCMSCSP) were prospectively and transversely evaluated during 2005. An anonymous, semi-structured, self-filling questionnaire was used. The average age of the students was 21.5 years, 43% females. 76.2% preferred alcohol, and 11.1% tobacco consumption; chloroethane (lança-perfume) consumption occurred in 22.6% and 15.3% consumption of other types of illicit drugs, with marijuana as …

This article proposes simple medical criteria that can be used by trainers and others for effective medical supervision of young female athletes.

METHODS: The cross-sectional, age-stratified study compared girls 10-17 years of age involved in intensive training in gymnastic floor exercises, trampoline, or badminton. Each sport and/or control group was represented by 40-45 girls. Data included medical history, morphometric variables and observation of biological development.

RESULTS: Gymnasts started training earliest (approximately 5-years-old) and trained most intensely (18-20 h/wk), followed by trampolinists and then badmintonists. Height, weight, body mass index, and % body fat were reduced in athletes, with gymnasts showing …

Protein expression profiles in rat bladder smooth muscle were compared between animal models of streptozotocin-induced diabetes mellitus (STZ-DM) and age-matched controls at 1 week and 2 months after induction of hyper-glycemia with STZ treatment. At each time point, protein samples from four STZ-DM and four age-matched control rat bladder tissues were prepared independently and analyzed together across multiple DIGE gels using a pooled internal standard sample to quantify expression changes with statistical confidence. Epidemiological studies have demonstrated that the prevalence of type 2 diabetes is increasing. It is estimated that I 0. 7% of adults over the age of 20 years and 23.1 % of adults over the age of 60 years have diabetes (NIH, 2007). Individuals with type 2 diabetes are 2-4 times more likely to die from heart disease than those without diabetes and twice as likely to die of all-cause mortality (CDC, 2005). Restoration of the tumor-suppression function by gene transfer of the melanoma differentiation-associated gene 7 (MDA7)/interleukin 24 (IL-24) successfully induces apoptosis in melanoma tumors in vivo. To address the molecular mechanisms involved, we previously revealed that MDA7/IL-24 treatment of melanoma cells down-regulates interferon regulatory factor (IRF)-1 expression and concomitantly up-regulates IRF-2 expression, which competes with the activity of IRF-1 and reverses the induction of IRF-1-regulated inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). Interferons (IFNs) influence melanoma cell survival by modulating apoptosis. A class I IFN (IFN-alpha) has been approved for the treatment of advanced melanoma with some limited success.
