Combined Magnetic Resonance (MR) and Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) has been proposed as a unique method to quantify hemodynamics, water content, and cellular size and packing density of breast tumors, as these tissue constituents can be quantified with increased resolution and overlaid on the structural features identified by the MR. However, the choices in how to reconstruct and visualize this information can have a dramatic impact on the feasibility of implementing this modality in the clinic. Filariasis limfatik masih merupakan masalah kesehatan masyarakat di Indonesia, khususnya di Kota Pekalongan. Hal ini ditandai dengan semakin meningkatnya angka mikrofilaria dan perluasan daerah dengan kasus filariasis limfatik.Tujuan penelitian adalah untuk mengetahui situasi filariasis limfatik di Kelurahan Pabean Kota Pekalongan. Penelitian ini meliputi penduduk dan agent, dalam periode sekitar enam bulan (Juli-Desember 2007) dengan disain studi cross sectional. Pada penelitian ini dilakukan pemeriksaan klinis, survei darah jari dan identifikasi parasit penyebab filariasis limfatik. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan angka mikrofilaria (3,4) angka kesakitan akut filaria (0,4 %) yang tinggi, tetapi angka kesakitan kronis filaria rendah (0,00 %). Kebiasaan merokok merupakan kausa kematian tinggi yang menjadi masalah kesehatan dunia. Data tahun 2004, jumlah perokok memperlihatkan tren meningkat dari 32% menjadi 35%. Jakarta menempati posisi tertinggi jumlah perokok. Penyakit ISPA non specific menempati level tertinggi dan terbanyak pada tahun 2006 dan diduga merupakan dampak kebiasaan merokok. Salah satu upaya pemerintah menurunkan kebiasaan merokok adalah peringatan tertulis pada label sigaret. Studi yang dilakukan pusat studi kesehatan Universitas Indonesia di Jakarta dan Cirebon pada tahun 2007 mengindikasikan bahwa 76,3% peringatan kesehatan terpilih dalam bentuk gambar dan tulisan merupakan peringatan kesehatan yang efektif. Pra-diabetes adalah kondisi berisiko Diabates Melitus tipe 2 yang dipengaruhi oleh faktor keturunan dan perilaku dengan prevalensi yang lebih tinggi daripada Diabates Melitus. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengetahui hubungan faktor risiko perilaku konsumsi lemak, konsumsi serat, konsumsi karbohidrat, aktivitas fisik dan merokok dengan kejadian pra-diabetes setelah dikendalikan oleh faktor keturunan. Desain studi yang digunakan adalah kros seksional dengan pengumpulan data melalui survei. Responden sebanyak 174 orang dipilih secara acak sederhana dari tiap kelurahan yang menjadi kluster. Kandungan Chemicals Oxygen Demand (COD) dan logam Cadmium pada air laut di Indonesia, dalam kisaran 123-398 ppm dan 0,024-0,044 ppm berada di luar batas yang diizinkan (COD = 40 ppm dan Cd = 0,01 ppm). The National Health Policy Forum sponsored a site visit to Richmond, Virginia, in October 2008 to explore social and environmental determinants of children’s health, including the impacts that poverty and exposure to lead-based paint have on birth outcomes, child development, and school readiness; and the community's efforts to address them. Though not large in population terms, Richmond faces many of the social and economic problems often common in larger urban areas—concentrated poverty, migration of wealth and services to the surrounding counties, a high infant mortality rate, and troubled schools. This thesis contains the findings from four years of research regarding an oligodendrocyte protein named neurofascin 155. The role of this protein in maintaining adhesion between the myelin sheath of oligodendrocytes and the axons of neurons has become well established in recent years and the research presented here has revealed that while western blots have previously shown one protein/band representing neurofascin 155, there are two proteins/bands. BACKGROUND: To determine if chronic elevation of the inflammatory cytokine, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFalpha), will affect infarct volume or cortical perfusion after focal cerebral ischemia.

METHODS: Transgenic (TNFalpha-Tg) rats overexpressing the murine TNFalpha gene in brain were prepared by injection of mouse DNA into rat oocytes. Brain levels of TNFalpha mRNA and protein were measured and compared between TNFalpha-Tg and non-transgenic (non-Tg) littermates. Mean infarct volume was calculated 24 hours or 7 days after one hour of reversible middle cerebral artery occlusion (MCAO). Cortical perfusion was monitored by laser-Doppler flowmetry (LDF) during MCAO. Cortical vascular density was quantified by stereology. …

A novel computational method and generation of mutant butyrylcholinesterase for cocaine hydrolysis is provided. The method includes molecular modeling a possible BChE mutant and conducting molecular dynamics simulations and hybrid quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical calculations thereby providing a screening method of possible BChE mutants by predicting which mutant will lead to a more stable transition state for a rate determining step. Site-directed mutagenesis, protein expression, and protein activity is conducted for mutants determined computationally as being good candidates for possible BChE mutants, i.e., ones predicted to have higher catalytic efficiency as compared with wild-type BChE. Sensory rhodopsin I (SRI) in Halobacterium salinarum acts as a receptor for single-quantum attractant and two-quantum repellent phototaxis, transmitting light stimuli via its bound transducer HtrI. Signal-inverting mutations in the SRI-HtrI complex reverse the single-quantum response from attractant to repellent. Fast intramolecular charge movements reported here reveal that the unphotolyzed SRI-HtrI complex exists in two conformational states, which differ by their connection of the retinylidene Schiff base in the SRI photoactive site to inner or outer half-channels. In single-quantum photochemical reactions, the conformer with the Schiff base connected to the cytoplasmic (CP) half-channel generates an attractant signal, whereas the conformer …

We report the application of recently developed microscopic models to estimate the apparent kinetic and thermodynamic parameters in a single molecule force spectroscopy study of the carbonic anhydrase enzyme and a complementary sulfonamide inhibitor. The most probable rupture force for the enzyme-inhibitor interaction shows a nonlinear dependency on the log-loading rate. Estimates for the kinetic and thermodynamic parameters were obtained by fitting the nonlinear dependency to linear cubic potential and cusp potential models and compared to the standard Bell-Evans model. The reliability of the estimated parameters was verified by modeling the experimental rupture force distributions by the theoretically predicted distributions …

Glycine betaine (GB), which occurs freely in the environment and is an intermediate in the catabolism of choline and carnitine, can serve as a sole source of carbon or nitrogen in Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Twelve mutants defective in growth on GB as the sole carbon source were identified through a genetic screen of a nonredundant PA14 transposon mutant library. Further growth experiments showed that strains with mutations in two genes, gbcA (PA5410) and gbcB (PA5411), were capable of growth on dimethylglycine (DMG), a catabolic product of GB, but not on GB itself. Hepatitis C virus is a major cause of chronic hepatitis, liver cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma infecting more than 170 million people. Hepatitis C virus envelope 2 glycoprotein (E2) binds several cell‐surface molecules that act as receptor candidates mediating hepatitis C virus entry into hepatocytes. Peptides derived from human lactoferrin have been shown to bind hepatitis C virus‐E2 protein thereby preventing hepatitis C virus entry in cultured hepatocytes. In this study, starting from a 33‐residue human lactoferrin‐derived peptide, a number of biotin‐linked α‐peptides were synthesized and investigated for their E2 protein binding activity.
