Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate esthetic posterior stainless steel crowns (EP-SSC) and compare their relative shear strengths.Methods: Sixty EP-SSC were compared. 15 crowns from NuSmile® Primary Crowns, Kinder Krowns, and Dental Innovators 1UP and EC Crowns were studied. The crowns were cemented to a typodont tooth then thermally cycled in water baths to simulate oral conditions. Shear strengths were evaluated by subjecting these crowns to simulated forces of occlusion.Results: The force required to cause shearing of the esthetic facings was statistically significant. Smoking tobacco is the largest single risk factor for premature death in developed countries. It is also associated with the greatest economic cost of all drugs in Australian society. In addition to the health and economic consequences associated with smoking, it has also been associated with mental health problems. Smoking has been associated with anxiety, depression and stress, as well as more pervasive disorders such as panic disorder and agoraphobia. Background: Labour analgesia has rapidly gained popularity in obstetric practice. Low usage in the developing world has raised concern.

Objectives: To assess the knowledge, attitude and use of labour pain relief methods in women attending antenatal clinic in Nairobi.

Design: A prospective study.

Setting: Aga Khan University Hospital, a teaching and referral hospital in Nairobi, Kenya.

Subjects: Two hundred and two consecutive expectant mothers attending antenatal clinic at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi.

Results: Fifty-six per cent of the participants had knowledge about labour pain relief methods. Friends, the antenatal clinic and books/leaflets were the major source on information. …

The note examines the contradictory landscape of transgender jurisprudence, particularly focusing on the legal struggles of transgender individuals to achieve recognition of their gender identity. It highlights the Kansas Supreme Court's decision in In the Matter of the Estate of Marshall G. Gardiner, which denied legal recognition of a transgender individual's marriage, contrasted with more progressive rulings in other jurisdictions. Recent reports from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, as well as from other medical and legal educators, stress that professional training of doctors and lawyers focuses too narrowly on knowledge-based learning, and not enough on context-based problem solving, professionalism, and ethics. Tracing recent calls from both legal and medical educators to increase the teaching of ethics, social responsibility, the lawyer-client and doctor-patient relationship, and holistic problem-solving, this article offers a model of interdisciplinary medical-legal education focused on developing practitioners sensitive to the needs of diverse and disenfranchised clients and patients. Cascades of biomedical discoveries in recent years promise to transform the way we think about our individual and collective health needs. Yet despite this progress, the national health care landscape is clouded. In addition to universally feared afflictions such as cancer and neurodegenerative disease, obesity is epidemic. Twenty-one million people in the United States suffer from diabetes and its complications such as heart disease and stroke. Other concerns range from the high incidence of cigarette smoking among teens to widespread anxiety and depression among adults and youth.

Occupational therapists believe social participation is an important aspect of adolescent development. Social participation problems can be linked to mental health diagnoses and delinquency. Adolescents who are court ordered into the juvenile justice system often do not receive the necessary treatment due to lack of resources within the community.

A comprehensive literature review was conducted to gather information regarding social participation aspects in relation to adolescent delinquency and placement within the juvenile justice system. The findings suggest there is more emphasis placed on punishment for adolescents rather than rehabilitation. Interventions used to support rehabilitation are primarily limited to counseling. A …

The literature indicates that approximately 730,000 Americans experience a new or recurrent stroke each year. There are approximately 4 million Americans living with some type of disability as a result of having suffered a stroke. Due to the high incidence of stroke related disability and associated economic costs; stroke rehabilitation is a health care priority. Even with early intervention only 10% of stroke survivors will recover completely, 25% recover with minor impairments, 40% experience moderate to severe impairments, 10% require care in a nursing home, and 15% die shortly after the stroke. Through Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis, embryos created by IVF are selected for transfer to a woman based on particular characterisations, including the presence of genetic markers or a tissue match for a sibling. In this paper we examine the precise language used in the recent policy and regulatory documents of four jurisdictions (the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada and New Zealand) that in any way characterises the post-PGD embryo. Obesity and physical inactivity are major public health problems in the United States. Campus-Community partnerships have the potential to address the community health and quality of life issues at the local level. The purposes of this study were: 1) to identify groups who are at risk for being overweight and physically inactive; 2) to identify a relationship between broad social ecological layers and weight and exercise levels; and 3) to identify community features that are associated with weight and exercise levels. Interventions for physical activity and weight reduction should consider the social ecological framework including environmental and social influences.

Many different tumors have been documented to have elevated levels of the enzyme ST6Gal I, a Golgi glycosyltransferase that adds α2-6 sialic acids to glycoproteins. Concurrently, upregulated ST6Gal I is associated with metastasis and poor patient prognosis. We initially showed that HD3 colonocytes made to express oncogenic-ras, a common mutation in colon carcinoma, have increased expression of ST6Gal I and elevated α2-6 sialylated integrins. Having established that ras regulates ST6Gal I expression in colon epithelial cells, we found that colonocytes carrying hyper α2-6 sialylated β1 integrins exhibit increased adhesion to and migration toward collagen I.
