The central melanocortin system plays a critical role in the regulation of energy balance in rodents and humans. The melanocortin signals in both the hypothalamus and brainstem contribute to this regulation. However, how the melanocortin signals of the hypothalamus interact with those intrinsic to the brainstem in the regulation of energy balance is poorly understood. The brainstem raphe pallidus (RPa) and adjacent areas contain melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4-R)-bearing neurons and sympathetic premotor neurons regulating thermogenesis. Here we report that α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH)-immunoreactive (IR) fibers are in close apposition to MC4-R neurons in the RPa. Retrograde tracing studies revealed a unique …

Prevalence of onychomycosis, as high as 26.9% in the general population, can be reduced by improving current antifungal treatment. This could be accomplished by understanding prognostic factors, especially healthy nail growth, associated with achieving complete cure. This population-based study aimed to evaluate if healthy nail length or percentage of total full nail length as healthy can be early indictors for complete cure. Logistics regression analyses were performed by comparing variables between a population who achieved the complete cure and a population who failed after both populations received the same antifungal treatment in two large randomized double-blinded clinical trials that assessed …

Not all women experience pregnancy and motherhood in the same way. There needs to be a greater understanding of how Mexican origin women experience pregnancy and anticipate mothering since Hispanics comprise the largest and fastest growing minority group in the United States. The purpose of this qualitative, descriptive inquiry was to explore the meaning of attachment, commitment, and preparation during pregnancy as an anticipatory phase of mothering for the Mexican origin woman giving birth in the United States. The detection, recognition and classification of features in a digital image is an important component of quality control systems in production and process engineering and industrial systems monitoring, in general. In this paper, a new pattern recognition system is presented that has been designed for the specific task of monitoring the quality of sheet-steel production in a rolling mill. Brain tumors are now the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in children under age 15. Malignant gliomas are, for all practical purposes, incurable and new therapeutic approaches are desperately needed. One emerging strategy is to use the tumor tracking capacity inherent in many stem cell populations to deliver therapeutic agents to the brain cancer cells. The nuclear factor-kappa B family of transcription factors is intimately involved in the regulation of the inflammatory responses that play a fundamental role in the damage of articular tissues. Thus, many studies have examined the important contributions of components of the NF-kappaB signaling pathways to the pathogenesis of various rheumatic diseases and their pharmacologic modulation. Currently available therapeutic agents including nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids, nutraceuticals, and disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs, as well as novel specific small-molecule inhibitors have been employed. Background and Purpose: Stroke is a devastating event that drastically changes the lives of many people worldwide. Stroke statistics vary across the United States with the highest rates in the southeast. Physical therapy is often required to return to normal function. Appropriateness for physical therapy is based on individual impairments, thus access to and amount of physical therapy should not differ between races. Methods: Using a South Carolina UB-92 data subset for 2002, univariate analysis is performed against physical therapy and race for ischemic stroke victims. Despite the clear association between diabetes and atherosclerotic vascular disease, the factors and mechanisms underlying the association between the two diseases are not well understood. Our preliminary studies, based on data obtained from the national Diabetes Control and Complication Trial/Epidemiology of Diabetes and Complications (DCCT/EDIC) cohort of type 1 diabetes subjects, suggest that diabetic atherosclerosis is linked to defects in the Kallikrein-Kinin System (KKS). Our research also found that apoliporotein E (ApoE) knockout mice, which have marked increase in total plasma cholesterol levels and a higher number of atherosclerotic lesions compared to wild type mice, have markedly higher plasma prekallikrein …

Calpains are a family of Ca^2+-activated, non-lysosomal, cysteine proteases that have been implicated in a variety of physiological and pathological processes. Currently, the family consists of 14 members, of which eight are typical (calpains 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 11, 12, and 14) and six are atypical (calpains 5, 6, 7, 10, 13, 15), based on the presence or absence of the Ca^2+-binding domain (domain IV), respectively. Arterial stiffness is considered both a risk factor and indicator of cardiovascular disease. The purpose of this study was to examine the associations of cardiovascular risk indicators of arterial compliance among 226 black and white individuals enrolled in an outpatient clinical setting. Data were collected by survey and examination with a computerized arterial pulse waveform analyzer. Arterial stiffness was estimated by indirect estimates of small artery and large artery compliance, as well as pulse pressure. After adjustments for age, race, and gender, logistic regression identified hypertension, end organ damage, and overweight as the strongest predictors for the three arterial stiffness …

PBMC from patients with SLE and splenic lymphocytes from murine models of SLE demonstrate increased expression of the ETS transcription factor Fli-1. Transgenic overexpression of Fli-1 in normal mice leads to SLE-like disease. These findings suggest investigation of the role of Fli-1 in SLE may elucidate etiology of the disease and potential therapies. The MRL/lpr mouse is a model of SLE exhibiting increased lymphocytic expression of Fli-1. Reduction of Fli-1 expression by heterozygousity at the Fli-1 locus (Fli1+/-) results in decreased auto- and alloantibodies, proteinuria, and renal pathology; and drastically decreased mortality. Disruption of the C-terminal transactivation domain (Fli1ΔCTA/ΔCTA) reduces …

Aim: The purpose of this study was to explore nurses’ attitudes towards perinatal bereavement care and to identify factors associate with such attitudes. Background: Caring for and supporting parents whose infant has died is extremely demanding, difficult and stressful. It is likely that the attitude of nursing staff can influence recovery from a pregnancy loss and nurses with positive attitude to bereavement care can help bereaved parents to cope during their grieving period.

Background: Within sociology it is generally accepted that the body has become an object or “project” that is worked on and transformed as a central part of self-identity (Baudrillard 1998; Corrigan 1997; Featherstone 1991; Giddens 1991; Turner 1995, 1992; Shilling 2003). An alternative to such arguments, Leder (1990) conceptualizes the body as an “absent presence”. He argues that, while the body plays a central role in shaping our experience of the world, we are frequently oblivious to our own bodies. For Leder, bodywork is sporadic. While a large number of studies describe the baseball pitch, there is a shortage of studies describing the windmill softball pitch. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to utilize electromyography (EMG) and motion analysis to determine the biomechanical factors of muscle recruitment, shoulder and elbow range of motion and joint velocities during the windmill softball pitch.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to analyze the amount of muscle activity of the rectus abdominis and external obliques during the gait cycle with the use of forearm crutches and three different weight bearing statuses. Subjects: Seven female adults were recruited from the University of North Dakota Physical Therapy program. Inclusion criteria: between the ages of 19 and 40 years of age, current physical therapy students, and healthy with no current upper or lower extremity injuries.

PURPOSE: Normative data ranges are not available for all functional balance tests for all age groups. The purpose is to establish intra-reliability and normative age-sensitive data ranges in a battery of functional balance-related measures including the modified Clinical Test for Sensory Integration and Balance (mCTSIB), One-legged Stance Test (OLST), Functional Reach Test (FRT), 30-second Sit-to-Stand Test (30STS), 1 O-meter Walk Test (10MWT), and Activities-specific Balance Confidence Scale (ABC Scale).

Infiltrating syringomatous adenoma of the nipple is a rare, benign lesion with distinct clinical and histological features. Origin from ducts of dermal sweat glands has been postulated. Important differential diagnosis include nipple adenoma, tubular carcinoma and adenosquamous carcinoma. Appropriate local management includes accurate diagnosis and complete excision to avoid local recurrences. This report describes the condition in a 39-year-old parous lady.
