Balance Function Following Cochlear Implantation, Jacquelyn Lea Baudhuin

Imbalance is a risk of cochlear implantation. This is particularly important in patients receiving bilateral implants, who are often children. 25 adult and pediatric patients undergoing cochlear implantation were tested pre-operatively and post-operatively using tests of balance function. Results showed moderate losses in some test paradigms following implantation in the patient group as a whole. While changes in balance function due to cochlear implantation are not uncommon, their practical effect on function may be minor.

An estimated 5 million Americans have congestive heart failure (CHF) and one in five over the age of 40 will develop CHF. There are numerous examples of CHF patients living beyond the years normally expected for people with the disease, usually attributed to taking an active role in disease management. The staggering costs that cripple our current system can be explained by the patchwork for-profit payer system employed in this country. One solution is to introduce a single payer program funded by the taxes already paid into the system. By eliminating much of the unnecessary administrative costs, health care spending can reach those areas where it matters most--providing quality care to those who need it and access to preventative care.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine if subtalar joint position affects the activity of hip musculature in static standing, and by those results imply a correlation between foot position and ACL injury risk.

Methods: Thirty participants took part in this randomized study in which EMG data were collected during 3 trials of 3 subtalar joint positions on the right lower extremity. The study aimed to investigate gender differences in knee valgus angle and interknee and inter-ankle distances in university volleyball players when performing opposed block jump landings. Six female and six male university volleyball players performed three dynamic trials each where subjects were instructed to jump up and block a volleyball suspended above a net set at the height of a standard volleyball net as it was spiked against them by an opposing player. Knee valgus/varus, interknee distance and inter-ankle distance (absolute and relative to height) were determined during landing using 3D motion analysis. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of zinc-dependent proteolytic enzymes that degrade extracellular matrix (ECM) components like collagen, fibronectin, and laminin. While this activity is important for normal development, morphogenesis, and wound healing, deregulation of MMP activity has been implicated in a number of cardiovascular diseases, including congenital heart defects, atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, and congestive heart failure. MMPs are good potential diagnostic indicators of cardiovascular disease, but current detection methods are time consuming and quite laborious. This review will discuss MMP biology, current methods for detection of MMPs from patient samples, and potential new developments in multiplexed analysis of MMPs.

The complexities of infectious diseases are not limited to one specialty, but rather encompass all types of physician care. One of the many present difficulties is the prevention, management, and treatment of microorganism resistance. In this review article, one method of acquired resistance possible to many bacteria, in particular Pseudomonas aeruginosa is described. This gram negative bacterium is able to induce an overexpression of efflux pumps that can eject intracellular antibiotics into the extracellular space, thereby avoiding cellular death.
