The concept of social justice emphasizes the need for the basic essentials of life, including health care, for all. Catholic social teaching confirms this with the principles of human dignity, common good and community, and option for the poor and vulnerable. When health care access and quality is compromised, persons with diabetes experience a greater risk for complications including a higher risk for lower extremity amputations (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2005). Verbum Incarnatum: An Academic Journal of Social Justice

Disparity in health care, and in particular care for pain related to disease, is a concern for many health professionals as well as those in the general population. Disparities in pain management for vulnerable societal groups, specifically the members of racial and ethnic groups, the poor and the elderly, are violations of the principles of social justice. This paper presents evidence of disparities in management of pain and cancer pain in vulnerable groups, explores the issues, and recommends health professional, individu alignal and system level actions to address disparity in this important area of health care.

Sex differences in schizophrenia are well known, but their genetic basis has not been identified. We performed a genome-wide association scan for schizophrenia in an Ashkenazi Jewish population using DNA pooling. We found a female-specific association with rs7341475, a SNP in the fourth intron of the reelin (RELN) gene (p = 2.9 × 10−5 in women), with a significant gene-sex effect (p = 1.8 × 10−4). We studied rs7341475 in four additional populations, totaling 2,274 cases and 4,401 controls. A significant effect was observed only in women, replicating the initial result (p = 2.1 × 10−3 in …

Aim: Vasospasm is one of the most important factors that influence the successful treatment of ruptured intracranial aneurysm. We studied if vasospasm following subarachnoidal haemorrhage (SAH) can be alleviated by dexmedetomidine in an animal model. Materials and Methods: Experimental SAH was induced in 12 of 18 New Zealand rabbits by intracisternal injection of autologous blood. Background: The present study investigated the effect of alcohol consumption on total antioxidant activity (AOA) and nitric oxide (NO) levels in the sera and brains of rats. Materials and methods: The study included 24 rats that were divided into 2 groups: the control group (n = 12) and the alcohol group (n = 12). Aim: To determine the factors related with coagulation disorders, deep venous thrombosis and thromboembolic events that are significant causes of morbidity and mortality in patients with lung cancer. Materials and Methods: D-dimer (DD) levels at the time of diagnosis were determined in patients diagnosed with lung cancer and these cases were monitored prospectively for thromboembolic events and survival. Results: DD levels significantly increased and were associated with length of survival in lung cancer patients. Background: Preeclampsia is a disorder that occurs only during pregnancy and the postpartum period and affects both the mother and the unborn baby. It is a rapidly progressive condition characterized by high blood pressure and the presence of protein in the urine. Aim: Recurrence after a successful nonoperative detorsion or a nondefinitive operation is an important problem in the treatment of sigmoid volvulus (SV). This study was designed to review the outcomes of elective treatment of successfully detorsioned SV and to discuss the treatment algorithm. Materials and Methods: The records of 873 patients were reviewed retrospectively. Results: Nonoperative treatment was applied in 614 patients. The success, mortality, complication and recurrence rates were 77.5%, 0.8%, 2.8%, and 4%, respectively. Aim: Brucellosis is a worldwide zoonotic disease that remains an important public health problem in rural Turkey. The aim of the present study was to identify Brucella species and biotypes, and to assess the antimicrobial susceptibility of isolates from blood samples. Materials and Methods: The study included 46 Brucella isolates from the Kırıkkale region of central Anatolia. The identification and biotyping of the isolates were based on conventional methods. The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of tetracycline, rifampin, streptomycin, ciprofloxacin, and azithromycin were determined using the E test method. Background: To discuss ophthalmic features and management of a patient with Alport´s syndrome and anterior lenticonus. Materials and Methods: A 22-year-old female patient with Alport´s syndrome who, in another center, had undergone laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) because of high myopia was determined to have bilateral anterior lenticonus. We treated the other eye by phacoemulsification and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation. Results: Lens extraction and IOL implantation gave satisfactory results. A Rare Cause Of Intestinal Obstruction: Meckel´S Diverticulitis, Oskay Kaya, Münevver Moran, Fati̇h Özdemi̇r, Süleyman Çeti̇nkunar

Small bowel obstruction is a rare complication of Meckel´s diverticulitis. Our purpose is to present a case of a 16-year-old boy with a 3 days history of abdominal pain, recurrent vomiting, and absence of stool discharge. He had appendectomy 3 years ago. Upon laparotomy, we observed small bowel obstruction due to an adhesion between the tip of the inflamed Meckel´s diverticulum and anterior abdominal wall. Although postoperative abdominal adhesions account for the most frequent cause of intestinal obstruction, Meckel´s diverticulitis should also be kept in mind.

Neuroblastoma is a common malignancy in children, but rarely occurs in adults. Neuroblastoma occurring in adolescents, compared to those occurring in children, are more frequently diagnosed in advanced stages and have common sites of metastases. Currently there are no standard treatment guidelines for patients with neuroblastoma in adulthood. If treated with standard protocols as those used for children, their survival is poor, particularly patients with localized disease seem to have a more aggressive course compared to children.

Aim: In this study, we aimed to assess the expression of CD117 in a large series of both Hodgkin´s and non-Hodgkin´s lymphoma, and to investigate the association between the expression patterns of CD117, IRF4/MUM1, and CD38. Materials and Methods: A total of 237 lymphoma cases were selected and examined within six tissue microarray paraffin blocks. Immunohistochemistry was performed using antibodies against CD117, IRF4/MUM1 and CD38. Results: CD117 and IRF4/MUM1 immunoreactivity were seen in a subset of high-grade and low-grade B-cell lymphomas, as well as T-cell lymphomas and classical type Hodgkin´s lymphomas. Aim: In this study, we investigated whether interferon gamma (IFN\gamma), lipopolysaccharides (LPS) and amyloid beta (AMY\beta), as toxic stimulator agents, and erythropoietin (EPO), as a neurotrophic agent, have an effect on the production of the following neurotrophic factors in the N9 murine microglia cell line: neurotrophin 3 (NT3), neurotrophin 4 (NT4), and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Current Trends And Future Implications In Sepsis Treatment, Bariş Doğu Yildiz, Kaya Yorganci

Sepsis is a systemic illness caused by invasion of tissues by pathogens. It is highly lethal, causing circulatory failure and death. There has been extensive research trying to identify possible therapies for sepsis. Apart from source control, and antibiotic and supportive therapy, glucocorticoids, anticoagulant agents, and immunoglobulins have been tried in both the experimental setting and in septic patients. Newer strategies include novel anticoagulant agents like ethyl pyruvate, statins, insulin receptor modulators and Toll-like receptor modulators. This review article summarizes both the current therapies and endeavors for future treatment in sepsis.

Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate the oxidative stress measured by serum total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and malondialdehyde (MDA) in patients with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP), and to evaluate their possible correlation with the serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and pneumonia severity index (PSI). Materials and Methods: The PSI, chest X-ray (CXR) scores, and the serum TAC, MDA, and CRP levels were determined in 67 CAP patients on admission and compared to 45 healthy controls.
