Schizophrenia: A Concept, Haider A Naqvi

Much of the current research-work into biological basis of mental disorders is predicted on implicit concept of disease that is less critical and sophisticated as it should be. It is remarkable, how the fundamental conceptual frame work of schizophrenia, as proposed by Professor Emil Kraepelin has stayed the same, since its inception almost 100-years ago. This review explores these issues besides highlighting alternative disease classification that suits behavioural neuroscience research.

Objective : Objective of the study was to elicit the pharmacodynamic response of the drug, Argemone mexicana (prickly poppy) on healthy human volunteers, in non-toxic doses. Methodology : The drug was proved through a double-blind placebo controlled technique and is a multi-centric study. Trial drug was proved in three potencies (200C, 30C and 6C) on 38 volunteers who were selected and declared apparently healthy during their pre-trial examination by specialists. A prospective study of the patients suffering from cervical spondylosis treated with bowel nosodes was conducted with the objective to study their efficacy when prescribed on the basis of stool culture report. The stool cultures of 82 enrolled cases were done for isolation of non-lactose fermenting bowel organisms. On the basis of the presence of the predominant bacteria in the stool of patient suffering from cervical spondylosis, the corresponding bowel nosode was administered. In this study,we have chosen HPTLC (High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography) as a method of analysis to develop a standard procedure based on fingerprinting characteristics for the evaluation of homreopathic formulations. A simple and accurate HPTLC method has been developed for the quantification of brucine,one of the chief active chemical components of Nux vomica (along with strychnine),and the fingerprinting of the in-house mother tincture of Nux vomica, considered here to be a standard, with that of different marketed samples available from manufacturers of homreopathic medicines in India. This HPTLC method was quantitatively evaluated in terms of stability, repeatability, and accuracy.

Additional effects on the previously reported procedure of precipitation of narrowly dispersed and well-defined, brick-shaped cholesterol particles, including non-solvent addition rate, temperature, solvent purity, aging treatments, ultrasound agitation and fine mechanical effects were investigated. Based on the presented results, significant morphological sensitivity of cholesterol precipitation processes upon variations from the standard established procedure of crystallization is induced. However, the tendency of cholesterol to crystallize in the form of biaxially grown particles was evidenced as dominating the precipitation processes, irrespective of any modifications of experimental parameters involved in the preparation procedure investigated hereby. Compulsive hoarding, the acquisition of and failure to discard large numbers of possessions, is associated with substantial health risk, impairment in functioning, and economic burden. Despite clear indications that hoarding has a detrimental effect on people living with or near someone with a hoarding problem, no empirical research has examined these harmful effects. The aim of the present study was to examine the burden of hoarding on family members. Six hundred sixty-five family informants who reported having a family member or friend with hoarding behaviors completed an internet-based survey. Recent studies suggest the importance of examining cumulative risk or advantage as potential predictors of health over the life course. Researchers investigating the cumulative health effects of education, however, have mainly conceptualized education in years or degrees, often disregarding educational quality and access to educational opportunities that may place individuals on divergent academic trajectories. We investigate whether educational advantages in youth are associated with an individual's health trajectory. We develop a novel index of educational advantage and employ random-intercept modeling using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth. This study assessed National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) members’ perceptions of effectiveness in a sport association. Specifically, this study investigated the extent to which professional members of NIRSA perceive it to be effective in achieving its stated and operative goals. A stratified systematic sample of professional NIRSA members (N = 600) was selected to complete the survey.

Introduction: Daily cigarette smoking among US adolescents remains a significant public health problem. Understanding risk is important in order to develop strategies to reduce this type of tobacco use. Prospective study in a population-representative birth cohort.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the diagnostic quality of MR images taken on subjects with different types of orthodontic lingual retainers in place. The study provides guidelines and recommendations for use of lingual retainer materials in those patients who are or may potentially undergo routine magnetic resonance imaging. Exposure of the central nervous system (CNS) to ionizing radiation is known to result in behavioral, cognitive, and motor deficits - effects similar to those seen in many neurodegenerative disorders. Neurons and astrocytes, two principal cell types in the brain, coexist as an interdependent metabolic unit via the neurotransmitter glutamate. Disruption of this metabolic coupling would have widespread effects within the CNS, therefore it is hypothesized that ionizing radiation impairs glutamate transport and metabolism, and increases oxidative stress, ultimately impairing neuron-astrocyte coupling.
