Impact Of Extra-Curricular Activities On Adolescents' Connectedness And Cigarette Smoking: Final Report, Margaret Hall, Greg Hamilton, Therese Shaw, Donna Cross, Tommy Cordin, Leanne Lester, Stacey Waters
Research outputs pre 2011
In Australia, cigarette smoking is still the leading cause of preventable death and yet in the past 10 years, despite efforts that have been made in the classroom and through the media, there have been limited reductions in adolescent smoking. The Extra-curricular Project builds on the work of two other projects conducted by researchers from the Child Health Promotion Research Centre (CHPRC). The Smoking Cessation for Youth Project (SCYP), conducted by the Western Australian Centre for Health Promotion Research, led to the identification of connectedness as a key mediator of cigarette smoking. The role of extra-curricular activities in mediating school …

Maximising Parent Involvement In The Pedestrian Safety Of 4 To 6 Year Old Children: Final Report, Child Health Promotion Research Centre
Research outputs pre 2011
In Australia pedestrian injury is the leading specific cause of death among 5-9 year old children, and pedestrian injuries among 0-14 year old children in 1999-20000 were the second highest cause of hospitalisation. This mortality and morbidity can be attributed largely to unsafe road environments and under 10 year old children's significant deficits in cognitive and perceptual abilities when crossing roads. For all children under 10 years learning to cross the road needs to be taught by parents in the same way that children learn to swim i.e. under close adult supervision and in the 'real' environment where the skills …

Ribosome Recycling: An Essential Process Of Protein Synthesis, Michael C. Kiel, Hideko Kaji, Akira Kaji
Ribosome Recycling: An Essential Process Of Protein Synthesis, Michael C. Kiel, Hideko Kaji, Akira Kaji
Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers
A preponderance of textbooks outlines cellular protein synthesis (translation) in three basic steps: initiation, elongation, and termination. However, researchers in the field of translation accept that a vital fourth step exists; this fourth step is called ribosome recycling. Ribosome recycling occurs after the nascent polypeptide has been released during the termination step. Despite the release of the polypeptide, ribosomes remain bound to the mRNA and tRNA. It is only during the fourth step of translation that ribosomes are ultimately released from the mRNA, split into subunits, and are free to bind new mRNA, thus the term "ribosome recycling." This step …
Inhibition Of Antiassociation Activity Of Translation Initiation Factor 3 By Paromomycin, Go Hirokawa, Hideko Kaji, Akira Kaji
Inhibition Of Antiassociation Activity Of Translation Initiation Factor 3 By Paromomycin, Go Hirokawa, Hideko Kaji, Akira Kaji
Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Faculty Papers
The effect of paromomycin on the interaction of ribosomal subunits was studied. Paromomycin inhibited the antiassociation activity of initiation factor 3 (IF3). Furthermore, ribosomal subunits were associated to form 70S ribosomes by paromomycin even in the presence of 1 mM Mg(2+). Paromomycin did not inhibit the binding of IF3 to the 30S ribosomal subunits. On the other hand, IF3 bound to the 30S subunits was expelled by paromomycin-induced subunit association (70S formation). These results indicate that the stabilization of 70S ribosomes by paromomycin may in part be responsible for its inhibitory effects on translocation and ribosome recycling.

Zoometrical Body Measurements And Their Relation With Liveweight In Native Turkish Geese, Mustafa Saatci, Muammer Ti̇lki̇
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The aims of this study were to determine the body measurements of native Turkish geese and to define the relationship between these measurements and liveweight. The differences in head diameter and neck length between the sexes became significant at 10, 12, 14 and 16 weeks of age (P < 0.05-0.01). The beak and wing lengths increased with age and were longer in males than in females at 12, 14 and 16 weeks of age. The effect of sex on body and trunk length was significant at 14 and 16 weeks (P < 0.05-0.01). Chest depth, girth and width increased with age. The positive correlations (0.88-0.97) of liveweight with head diameter, neck length, body length, trunk length, chest girth, wing length and metatarsus length at 2 weeks of age were highly significant. The most reliable prediction from the regression analyses was between liveweight and body length + chest girth in weeks 2 and 8 (R^2 = 94%). Our study presents the body measurements and the correlations between these measurements and liveweight in geese of different ages. These correlations might be used to evaluate the liveweight of studied geese population and for selection based on liveweight.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The acute toxicity of carbaryl, methiocarb and carbosulfan to juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss; 1.92 ± 0.5 g) and guppies (Poecilia reticulata; 0.45 ± 0.04 g) was evaluated in 96-h toxicity tests under static conditions. Concentrations in the toxicity test ranged from 0.85 to 8.5 mg/l for carbaryl, from 0.7 to 28.0 mg/l for methiocarb, and from 0.031 to 12.5 mg/l for carbosulfan. Carbaryl and methiocarb were more toxic to rainbow trout than to guppies. However, compared with rainbow trout, guppies were more sensitive to carbosulfan. The incidence of mortality in fish increased significantly (P < 0.05) with increasing pesticide concentrations. The time required to kill 50% (LT_{50}) of the rainbow trout at the lowest concentrations of carbaryl, methiocarb, and carbosulfan was 51 h 12 min, 74 h 35 min, and 107 h 57 min, respectively. As insecticide concentrations were increased, LT_{50} values decreased (P < 0.05).

Seroepidemiology Of Equine Influenza Virus Infection In Turkey, Veysel Soydal Ataseven, Janet Mary Daly
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The aim of this study was to investigate the seroepidemiology of equine influenza infection in Turkey, measured using the haemagglutination inhibition (HI) assay. Serum samples were obtained from 623 equids aged older than 4 years from 5 different geographical regions in Turkey during the years 2003-2005. Antibodies against equine influenza virus (EIV) were found in 194 (31.1%) of the 623 sera. Seropositivity rates were detected as 41.8% (171/409), 12.8% (11/86), and 9.4% (12/128) in horses, mules, and donkeys, respectively. The data revealed that EIV circulates in Turkey at a relatively high rate. Differences in seropositivity rates in Equidae from different …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study was carried out with Damascus (Shami) goats and German Fawn x Hair goat (B1) crossbreds at Mustafa Kemal University. Animals were housed in semi-open sheds under semi-intensive conditions. Both groups were fed 600 g/head per day of concentrate and grazed in a pasture during lactation. Moulted cashmere was harvested by combing in February, March, and April, 2005, at 14-day intervals. The dimensions of cashmere fibres were determined by measuring 25 cashmere fibres from each goat using a Visopan microscope; fibre length was measured with a ruler. Mean diameter and length of cashmere for Shami and the crossbreds was …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
This study was designed to determine the types of Clostridium perfringens and their toxins in diarrhoeic calves in Kars. For this purpose, 150 calves with diarrhoea, 13 dead calves, and 25 healthy calves of less than 1-month old were used. Faecal samples from the diarrhoeic and control calves and intestinal contents from the dead calves were collected and used to determine alpha, beta, and epsilon toxins produced by C. perfringens types using a commercially available ELISA test kit. A total of 122 (81.33%) faecal samples collected from the diarrhoeic calves were found to be positive for C. perfringens toxins. According …
