Hemispheric Differences In Indexical Specificity Effects In Spoken Word Recognition, Julio Gonza´Lez, Conor T. Mclennan

Variability in talker identity, one type of indexical variation, has demonstrable effects on the speed and accuracy of spoken word recognition. Furthermore, neuropsychological evidence suggests that indexical and linguistic information may be represented and processed differently in the 2 cerebral hemispheres, and is consistent with findings from the visual domain. For example, in visual word recognition, changes in font affect processing differently depending on which hemisphere initially processes the input. The present study examined whether hemispheric differences exist in spoken language as well. Objective The purpose of this study was to examine the antibacterial activity of extract from mangosteen pericarp against Streptococcus mutans, bacteria associated with dental plaque formation and caries development. Materials and methods Bacterial strains used in this study were S. mutans ATCC 25175 and KPSK2. Antibacterial activity was expressed as minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC). The rates at which bacteria were killed were also determined by exposure to the extract at 2x and 4x MBC for varying time periods. Results The extract was effective against both strains of S. mutans. โครงการสร้างเสริมสุขภาพช่องปากในโรงเรียนตามหลักการสุขภาพแบบองค์รวมและชุมชนมีส่วนร่วม, สุดาดวง เกรันพงษ์, วนิดา นิ้วสุวรรณ

วัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อดําเนินโครงการสร้างเสริมสุขภาพช่องปากตามหลักการสุขภาพองค์รวมและการมีส่วนร่วมของ ชุมชน และเพื่อแสดงให้เห็นกระบวนการและการประเมินผลโครงการในขั้นตอนต่าง ๆ วิธีการ งานวิจัยเชิงปฏิบัติการระยะเวลาหนึ่งปีในโรงเรียนอนุบาลหมู่บ้านเด็กสานรัก ดําเนินโครงการ 4 ขั้นตอน ได้แก่ เตรียมความพร้อม สํารวจปัญหา ดําเนินการ (ประกอบด้วย ขั้นปฏิบัติการสร้างเสริมสุขภาพ ประเมิน ผลลัพธ์ของงานสร้างเสริมสุขภาพ และผลลัพธ์ทางสุขภาพระดับกลาง) และสรุป การเก็บข้อมูลและการประเมินผล ใช้วิธีการเชิงคุณภาพร่วมกับเชิงปริมาณ โดยใช้แบบบันทึก การสัมภาษณ์ สังเกตการณ์ และวิเคราะห์โภชนาการ ของเด็ก (สารอาหาร กลุ่มอาหาร และน้ําตาล) เปรียบเทียบก่อนและหลังดําเนินโครงการ ผลการศึกษา เด็กส่วนใหญ่มีฟันผุ ด้อยพัฒนาการเจริญเติบโต แปรงฟันด้วยวิธีที่ไม่เหมาะสม โภชนาการของ โรงเรียนยังขาดความสมดุลและครบถ้วนตามเกณฑ์ ทีมผู้วิจัยและทางโรงเรียนได้ร่วมพัฒนาโครงการย่อย 2 โครงการ คือ “โภชนาการแบบองค์รวม” และ “แปรงฟันด้วยกันก่อนอาบน้ํา” ที่ประกอบด้วยมาตรการทาง สังคมและสิ่งแวดล้อมต่าง ๆ ซึ่งสามารถปรับปรุงโภชนาการของเด็กได้อย่างชัดเจนโดยเฉพาะการลดปริมาณ น้ําตาลลงได้ถึงร้อยละ 80 และปรับปรุงการแปรงฟันของเด็กทุกคนตอนเช้าและเย็นให้สม่ําเสมอและบ้วนน้ําเพียง หนึ่งครั้งได้ ร้อยละของเด็กที่แปรงฟันได้นาน 2 นาทีเพิ่มขึ้นจาก 6.4 เป็น 63.3 โดยใช้วิธีแปรง 12 จังหวะที่พี่เลี้ยง เป็นต้นความคิด สรุป การศึกษานี้แสดงให้เห็นถึงการนําหลักการเรื่องสุขภาพแบบองค์รวมและการมีส่วนร่วมของชุมชนมาใช้ในการดําเนินงานสร้างเสริมสุขภาพช่องปาก โครงการสามารถปรับปรุงโภชนาการและนิสัยการแปรงฟันของเด็กได้ซึ่งน่าจะเป็นแนวทางสําหรับการผนวกการสร้างเสริมสุขภาพช่องปากให้เป็นส่วนหนึ่งในการดําเนินงานโรงเรียนส่งเสริมสุขภาพได้ (ว ทันต จุฬาฯ 2550:30:11-28)

Objectives: No instrument for assessing dentistsû job stress has been developed in Thailand. The objectives of this study were to describe the development of a Job Stress Inventory (JSI), a new self-report measure, and to assess its reliability, validity and factorial structure. Methods: A systematic random sample of 733 practicing dentists in Thailand was sent a mailed questionnaire that included the JSI and other questions. The JSI consisted of 30 items in a 5-point Likert format; a higher score reflected a higher level of job stress. Reliability was assessed by Cronbachûs alpha internal consistency coefficients. The purpose of this research project is to investigate evidence that an elective abortion affects a woman's mental health. Included are literature reviews and studies aimed at gathering information and quantifying these effects. Because this is a highly politicized and controversial topic, it has been difficult to find objective resources. Several areas are addressed: the difference between short vs. long-term effects on a woman's mental health subsequent to an elective abortion, evidence of delayed grief reaction and the link with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Despite evidence that viral hepatitis poses a significant risk to public health, universal vaccination has not yet been implemented. The risk for viral hepatitis infection is particularly high among injection drug users and other individuals who do not attend regular health care visits. Jails provide a structural opportunity to vaccinate these high risk individuals. HAV and HBV vaccines administered on an accelerated three week schedule could dramatically decrease the lifetime risk for contracting viral hepatitis among jail detainees. BACKGROUND: The non-human primate (NHP) research community has been intensely interested in obtaining whole-genome expression arrays for their work. Recently, novel approaches were used to generate the DNA sequence information for a rhesus GeneChip. To test the reliability of the rhesus GeneChip across different centers, RNA was isolated from five sources: cerebral cortex, pancreas, thymus, testis, and an immortalized fibroblast cell line. This thesis explored the personal experience of creating a stained glass window with five adolescents who had previously been identified as causing self-harm to themselves. The narratives of these five adolescents between the ages of thirteen to seventeen were collected in qualitative interviews. This study emphasized the importance of; self-object and transitional object, destructive and creative process, power and self-esteem. Introduction The relationship between oxygen delivery and consumption in sepsis is impaired, suggesting a microcirculatory perfusion defect. Recombinant human erythropoietin ( rHuEPO) regulates erythropoiesis and also exerts complex actions promoting the maintenance of homeostasis of the organism under stress. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that rHuEPO could improve skeletal muscle capillary perfusion and tissue oxygenation in sepsis. Methods Septic mice in three experiments received rHu-EPO 400 U/kg subcutaneously 18 hours after cecal ligation and perforation ( CLP). BACKGROUND: Mechanisms that confer an ability to respond positively to environmental osmolarity are fundamental to ensuring embryo survival during the preimplantation period. Activation of p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) occurs following exposure to hyperosmotic treatment. Recently, a novel scaffolding protein called Osmosensing Scaffold for MEKK3 (OSM) was linked to p38 MAPK activation in response to sorbitol-induced hypertonicity. The human ortholog of OSM is cerebral cavernous malformation 2 (CCM2). Post-operative radiation therapy (RT) (1) and post-operative chemoradiation (2) have been used for esophageal cancer patients deemed high risk for recurrence after esophagectomy.

Defining opitmal RT target volume after esophagectomy is difficult due to significant changes in patient anatomy and function.

Some radiationon cologists advocated the inclusion of the anastomotic site within the irradiation volume due to concerns for potential increased relapse risk, while others did not subscribe to this practice due to concerns for increased treatment related toxicity.

Objectives. We examined the importance of social support in promoting thriv- ing health among indigenous Canadians, a disadvantaged population.

Methods. We categorized the self-reported health status of 31 625 adult indig- enous Canadians as thriving (excellent, very good) or nonthriving (good, fair, poor). We measured social support with indices of positive interaction, emotional support, tangible support, and affection and intimacy. We used multivariable lo- gistic regression analyses to estimate odds of reporting thriving health, using social support as the key independent variable, and we controlled for educational attainment and labor force status.
