Risks Of Herbal Remedies: More Of The Bad And The Ugly, Richard Philp

The widespread and increasing use of herbal remedies has increased the risk, and the documentation, of adverse effects. This paper describes some of these that have occurred since 2004. Cases are discussed in which herbal remedies (St. John’s wort, echinacea, grapefruit juice) have altered the metabolism of prescription drugs. Others have interfered with diagnostic laboratory tests (Chan Su, Dan Shen) or caused pseudoaldosteronism due to their (unidentified) content of glycyerrhizin. Aristolochia spp. have caused nephropathy. Hypersensitivity reactions (spice ginger and others), increased sensitivity to ultraviolet therapy (PUVA) (St. John’s wort) have been reported and the consumption of blue cohosh by …

Objective. We examined whether African American women were as likely as White women to receive the results of a recent mammogram and to self-report results that matched the mammography radiology report (i.e., were adequately communicated). We also sought to determine whether the adequacy of communication was the same for normal and abnormal results.

Methods. From a prospective cohort study of mammography screening, we compared self-reported mammogram results, which were collected by telephone interview, to results listed in the radiology record of 411 African American and 734 White women who underwent screening in 5 hospital-based facilities in Connecticut between October 1996 …

PIK3CA, encoding the p110alpha catalytic subunit of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K), is mutated in a variety of human cancers. We screened the colon cancer cell lines previously established in our laboratory for PIK3CA mutations and found that four of them harbored gain of function mutations. We have now compared a panel of mutant and wild-type cell lines for cell proliferation and survival in response to stress. There was little difference in PI3K activity between mutant PIK3CA-bearing cells (mutant cells) and wild-type PIK3CA-bearing cells (wild-type cells) under optimal growth conditions. The cell fate determination factor DACH1 plays a key role in cellular differentiation in metazoans. DACH1 is engaged in multiple context-dependent complexes that activate or repress transcription. DACH1 can be recruited to DNA via the Six1/Eya bipartite transcription (DNA binding/coactivator) complex. c-Jun is a critical component of the activator protein (AP)-1 transcription factor complex and can promote contact-independent growth. Herein, DACH1 inhibited c-Jun-induced DNA synthesis and cellular proliferation. Excision of c-Jun with Cre recombinase, in c-jun(f1/f1) 3T3 cells, abrogated DACH1-mediated inhibition of DNA synthesis. c-Jun expression rescued DACH1-mediated inhibition of cellular proliferation. Objectives: The purpose was to assess the prevalence and correlates of complementary and alternative medicine use for weight control.

Design: A list-assisted random-digit-dialed telephone survey of adults was conducted in the fall of 2002 (n = 11,211). The focus of the study was complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use, other than dietary supplements, in the previous 12 months.

Settings/location: The sample of respondents was drawn from the total noninstitutionalized U.S. adult population residing in telephone-equipped locations.

Detailed study on effects of homoeopathic drugs on plant bodies was undertaken at Central Institute for Research on Cotton Technology (ICAR) in Mumbai. This paper presents promising results of some of these preliminary experiments. This study reveals that electrically neutral and pure distilled water develops internal electrical charges as soon as homoeopathic drugs are added into it. Different drugs as well as different potencies of same drug develop different electrical charges. Staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) types and Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) gene carriage were compared among suspected community-associated methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus MRSA (CA-MRSA) and health care-associated MRSA (HA-MRSA) isolates. CA-MRSA isolates carried the SCCmec type IV complex, and most were PVL positive. The HA-MRSA isolates carried the SCCmec type II complex and did not harbor the PVL genes.

The adverse effect of increasing age and/or body weight on distance run performance has been well documented. Accordingly, nearly all five kilometer (5K) road races employ age categories and, sometimes, a heavier body weight classification. Problems with such conventions include small numbers of runners within older age categories and the advantage given to the lightest runners within each weight category. We developed a 5K Handicap (5KH), a model that calculates an adjusted run time based on the inputs of actual 5K run time, age, and body weight for men and women. BACKGROUND/AIMS: This study characterized the safety and pharmacological properties of AVI-005, a novel glycosylated recombinant human interferon-alpha2b produced from the egg whites of chickens transfected with human cDNA.

METHODS: 18 healthy volunteers received single subcutaneous rising doses (0.5, 1.66 or 5 million international units, MIU) of AVI-005. A randomized parallel comparator group of 10 subjects received 5 MIU of unglycosylated IFN-alpha2b (Intron A). The pharmacokinetic parameters t1/2, tmax, Cmax, AUC0-24h, Vd, and clearance were compared between AVI-005 and unglycosylated IFN-alpa2b.

Focal adhesions attach cultured cells to the extracellular matrix, and we found endogenous protein phosphatase-1alpha isoform (PP1alpha) localized in adhesions across the entire area of adherent fibroblasts. However, in fibroblasts migrating into a scrape wound or spreading after replating PP1alpha did not appear in adhesions near the leading edge but was recruited into other adhesions coincident in time and space with incorporation of tensin. Endogenous tensin and PP1alpha co-precipitated from cell lysates with isoform-specific PP1 antibodies. T. brucei is the causative agent of sleeping sickness in humans and nagana in cattle. The parasite is transmitted by the tsetse fly, which is endemic in many areas of Africa. Considerable metabolic changes occur between the two life cycle stages, the procyclic fly form (PCF) and the mammalian bloodstream form (BSF). This work focuses on two enzymes of T. brucei (1) Transaldolase (TbTA) is part of the pentose phosphate pathway. The pathway is complete in the PCFS, but show abnormalities in the BSF. In particular, the enzymes preceding and succeeding the TbTA reaction are not detectable in BSF. This …
