According to the United Nations, less than one-sixth of the world’s population is made up of the industrialized world. In contrast, the developing world, consisting of approximately 125 low and middle-income countries, is home to about 5.1 billion people. It is in these developing counties that there is an insatiable need for improved public health. In January of 2007, I spent a week working in a medical clinic in Guaimaca, Honduras. I witnessed first hand the suffering, poverty, and injustice of one small town. Yet, what struck me the most was that despite the hardships and the lack of basic …

The Effects Of Child Sexual Abuse And Posttraumatic Stress On Levels Of Self-Efficacy, Lary L. Anderson

Graduate Theses

Sexually abused children often develop posttraumatic stress disorder, a distressing and potentially debilitating condition that renders children to feelings of helplessness. Past studies have explored these effects in adults concerning sexual abuse, health issues, war, and natural disaster but not much research has been done for children. This study examined childhood sexual abuse, PTSD, and the relation that exists with self-efficacy. Thirty-nine children, 7 males and 32 females, participated in the study. The ages ranged from age eight through age eighteen, with a mean age of 12.5. Each participant was tested for levels of PTSD, using the Trauma Check list …

Rethinking The Body Mass Index Initiative, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter May 2007

Rethinking The Body Mass Index Initiative, Sarah C. Mckenzie, Gary W. Ritter

Policy Briefs

In February 2005, the Office for Education Policy published a fact sheet detailing Arkansans’ attitudes toward the Body Mass Index initiative (BMI) and found that the state was roughly divided on the issue. Since 2005, the results of BMI screening have been chronicled in a pair of government reports, and the General Assembly has acted to modify how BMI testing is undertaken. In this policy brief we outline what the research indicates after three years of BMI testing, and how the laws surrounding BMI have changed.

An Analysis Of Providers' Practices Regarding Smoking Cessation, Laurie Fowler May 2007

An Analysis Of Providers' Practices Regarding Smoking Cessation, Laurie Fowler

MSN Research Projects

Clinical guidelines are the basis of any primary care setting. They were developed in order to give the healthcare provider access to information regarding screening, assistance, and management of certain ailments. Smoking cessation education is among the many clinical guidelines. Smoking is also among the modifiable risk factors for many diseases, including heart disease and cancer. A nonexperimental, ex post facto chart review was used to evaluate if healthcare professionals provided and documented smoking cessation education. A random sample o f (N=200) patients’ charts were selected at a clinic site in Northeast Mississippi. The purpose o f the study was …

The Effect Of Ecological Gradients On The Fish Assemblages Of The Green And Tradewater River Basins Of Kentucky, Brian Lewis May 2007

The Effect Of Ecological Gradients On The Fish Assemblages Of The Green And Tradewater River Basins Of Kentucky, Brian Lewis

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The composition of lotic assemblages is influenced by many landscape factors. Foremost among these are basin geomorphology, fluvial and substrate characteristics, stream size, and land use. The primary purpose of this investigation was to determine if fish assemblages within Kentucky's Green River and Tradewater River Basins were associated with local scale environmental gradients and, if so, which gradients were the most important in shaping fish assemblages and which fish species were most closely associated with these gradients. A secondary purpose was to determine which regionalization or characterization strategy best segregated streams within the study area according to fish assemblages. Eighty-eight …

Assimilation Into A Therapeutic Community For Substance-Abusing Women, Joni Furlong May 2007

Assimilation Into A Therapeutic Community For Substance-Abusing Women, Joni Furlong

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Therapeutic communities provide structure, support and a safe living environment for individuals attempting to recover from addiction. Using peer influence, counseling, education, self-help groups, and case management, they assist residents in conforming to social norms and developing effective coping mechanisms while remaining drug-free. Prior studies have consistently demonstrated the effectiveness of these programs. But, why are they effective for some and not others? This study explored the residents1 backgrounds and the methods employed by them to assimilate into the therapeutic community, the recovering community, and then society at large. The data confirmed my suspicion that the women's ability to conform …

Behavioral Approaches To Weight Control: A Review Of Current Research, Angela Marinilli Pinto, Jessica Gokee-Larose, Rena R. Wing May 2007

Behavioral Approaches To Weight Control: A Review Of Current Research, Angela Marinilli Pinto, Jessica Gokee-Larose, Rena R. Wing

Publications and Research

Weight management is a salient issue for women. Studies of behavioral, pharmacological and surgical interventions indicate that women comprise the majority of patients presenting for weight-loss treatment. In this review we discuss the health impact of obesity for women, review behavioral treatments for adult overweight and obesity, and address topics of particular relevance for women, including concerns that weight-loss treatment may precipitate the development of eating pathology, as well as time periods of high risk for weight gain such as pregnancy and menopause.

Conservation Studies Of Insect Cave Faunas In Mammoth Cave National Park And Ghana, West Africa, Chris Dewildt

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

As part of a long term ecological monitoring effort at Mammoth Cave National Park, a blind cave beetle, Neaphaenops tellkampfi, was collected and data on populations trends gathered from September 2005 through December 2006 in Great Onyx Cave. The sex and age of each individual in each of 15 sites were determined and density trends of the entire population was measured. The species was chosen due to its role as an indicator species, since potential anthropogenic threats to the environment can be detected via population response. This was the initial implementation of a new monitoring method and a test of …

Biochemical And Functional Characterization Of The Tapasin/Erp57 Conjugate, David Ryan Peaper May 2007

Biochemical And Functional Characterization Of The Tapasin/Erp57 Conjugate, David Ryan Peaper

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Recognition of MHC class I/peptide complexes is required for the generation of CD8+ T cell responses. Peptide loading onto MHC class I/beta2m dimers occurs in the ER and involves both specific proteins and cellular chaperones. Tapasin is essential for peptide loading onto most MHC class I alleles, and it forms a mixed disulfide with the glycoprotein specific oxidoreductase ERp57. I have characterized the biochemical requirements for tapasin/ERp57 conjugate formation and addressed potential functions for ERp57 in peptide loading. Tapasin specifically recruits ERp57 into a mixed disulfide at the expense of free ERp57 in the ER. Other components of the MHC …

Oligomerization Of Benm, A Lysr-Type Transcriptional Regulator: Structural Basis For The Aggregation Of Proteins In This Family., Obidimma Ezezika, Sandra Haddad, Ellen L Neidle, Cory Momany

Health Studies Publications

LysR-type transcriptional regulators comprise the largest family of homologous regulatory DNA-binding proteins in bacteria. A problematic challenge in the crystallization of LysR-type regulators stems from the insolubility and precipitation difficulties encountered with high concentrations of the full-length versions of these proteins. A general oligomerization scheme is proposed for this protein family based on the structures of the effector-binding domain of BenM in two different space groups, P4(3)22 and C222(1). These structures used the same oligomerization scheme of dimer-dimer interactions as another LysR-type regulator, CbnR, the full-length structure of which is available [Muraoka et al. (2003), J. Mol. Biol. 328, 555-566]. …

Immunoadjuvanticity Of Chlorophyll, Jocelyn Helen Parks Ramos May 2007

Immunoadjuvanticity Of Chlorophyll, Jocelyn Helen Parks Ramos

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Background: Vaccines are formulations containing antigenic determinants (from non-self organic matters) and immuno-enhancers called adjuvants. Together, they evoke protective immune responses in hosts. Adjuvants are substances that further vaccines' capability to induce a robust immune response. Common side effects with conventional adjuvants used in most vaccines are toxicity, inflammation and granulomas. In this study we investigated the pigment chlorophyll (Chl) for immunoadjuvanticity. The selection of chlorophyll is based on the fact that it is a component in foods such as spinach, and that it contains an isoprenoid structure that is a feature of many conventional adjuvants, Pristane and Squalene. Chl …
