A survey on mosquito species was conducted once a month in a PRRS positive pig farm in Nakorn Pathom province from May 2004 to April 2005. The mosquito larvae were collected over an area within 1 km of the farm and adult females were captured while feeding on the pigs between 6 to 10 p.m. using oral aspirators. Out of a total of 91,840 mosquitoes, 3 genera and 6 species were identified Culex tritaeniorhynchus, Cx. gelidus, Mansonia uniformis, Ma. annulifera, Anopheles vagus and An. peditaeniatus with Culex tritaeniorhynchus (60-95.75%) predominant with Ma. annulifera found the least (0.02-0.05%). Pubic Symphysiodesis For The Optional Treatment Of Canine Hip Dysplasia, Kanyada Mangklapruk, Kumpanart Soontornvipart, Atichat Brahmasa

Pubic symphysiodesis (PS) using a bone plate and screws was performed in 10 hip dysplastic dogs, diagnosed following clinical and radiographic evaluation. After resection of the cranial third of the pubic symphysis, the rest of the symphysis was fixed by a dynamic compression plate and screws. Animal gait, Norberg angle (NA), dorsal acetabular rim slope (DARS) and dorsal acetabular rim angle (DARA) were radiographically evaluated before, immedimtely after, and at 1 and 3 months after surgery. NA and DAR of all dogs were significantly (p<0.05) greater than the preoperative values, while DARS was less than the preoperative value. After surgery, 75% of the hip joints had no Ortolani signs, while all dogs regained normal gait within one week of the operation.

This study assessed rates of imaginal exposure therapy (ET) utilization and completion of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in a clinical setting and examined variables associated with CBT completion. Using a clinical definition, the completion rate of CBT was markedly lower than rates reported in randomized trials. CBT completion was inversely related to severity of overall pretreatment measures of PTSD, avoidance, hyperarousal, depression, impaired social functioning, and borderline personality disorder. Regression yielded avoidance and depression as unique predictors of completion. Most dropouts occurred before starting imaginal ET, although initiating ET was associated with greater likelihood of …

Interpersonal processes and dynamics are ubiquitous topics in psychotherapy, yet they are difficult to study and are theoretically fragmented across therapeutic subdisciplines. The current study tests an integrative model of interpersonal dynamics in small groups using nonlinear dynamical systems theory. The conversation of one group therapy session (with six adolescent sex offenders) is analyzed using orbital decomposition, which allows for the identification of patterns in categorical time series data. The results show evidence of selforganizing social patterns, based on formal measures of turbulence (Lyapunov dimension), information novelty (Shannon's entropy), and complexity (fractal dimension). Background and objective: Random errors, from any source, will attenuate epidemiological risk estimates. Before we launched the Shanghai Men’s Health Study (SMHS), a large population-based cohort study investigating the diet–cancer association among Chinese men, a dietary calibration study was conducted among 96 men aged 40–75 years (mean age 56.5 years), with biweekly 24-hour dietary recalls (24HDRs) implemented over a 1-year period. Researchers have studied negative effects of caregiving on a family caregiver; however, less is known about positive aspects of exchanging assistance for both members of a family caregiving dyad. In a previous naturalistic inquiry the author indentified a basis for studying caregiving interactions was a construct called shared care. The three components of shared care identified in the naturalistic inquiry were communication, decision making, and reciprocity. Although efforts are being made to decrease the number of new HIV infections in Thailand, less support is give to the growing population that is already affected by the disease. This qualitative study explores the roles of Buddhist temples in the treatment of AIDS in Thailand, specifically the perspectives of both Buddhist monks and persons who are living with AIDS on HIVIAIDS and the care provided at the temples. Three major themes were derived from the interviews: (1) temple as a last choice; (2) temple as a support group; and (3) the role of Buddhism and monks at the temple.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE:

To present the early results of pelvic osteotomies performed for repair of exstrophy bladder.

METHODS:

Five cases of exstrophy bladder were treated with closure following bilateral iliac osteotomies. Three patients underwent closure of pubic symphysis diastasis by use of external fixator, one by screws and cerclage wires, and one by use of K-wires and suture. The patients were followed up by the pediatric urologist and orthopedic surgeon.

RESULTS:

All patients achieved a closure of diastasis and a tension free repair after the index surgery. The average follow-up was 3.6 years with range of 4 months to 6 years. …

This study examined the effectiveness of using aquatic therapy (AT) as a technique in the treatment of cerebral vascular accidents (CVA). The unique properties of the aquatic environment were manipulated to determine change in range of motion, muscle tone, balance, functional ambulation, and psychological functioning particularly social relationship and positive and negative feelings.

A single subject design was conducted using two subjects that participated in a twelve week aquatic therapy program. Aquatic therapy showed to be effective in treating common symptoms of a CVA. More research needs to be completed to ensure the effectiveness of aquatic therapy in congruency with …

This pilot study was intended to explore caregivers' perceptions of the mental health services available in the community for children with mental health diagnoses. A study-specific survey was developed to look at demographic characteristics, service accessibility, and service quality. This survey was distributed to caregivers through Michigan support groups. Returned surveys were analyzed for themes that could assist in the development of further research to improve community services for children with mental health diagnoses.

A temporal gradient of the novel nuclear protein LIN-14 specifies the timing and sequence of stage-specific developmental events in Caenorhabditis elegans. The profound effects of lin-14 mutations on worm development suggest that LIN-14 directly or indirectly regulates stage-specific gene expression. We show that LIN-14 can associate with chromatin in vivo and has in vitro DNA binding activity. A bacterially expressed C-terminal domain of LIN-14 was used to select DNA sequences that contain a putative consensus binding site from a pool of randomized double-stranded oligonucleotides. This study compared the efficacy of 2 anthelmintic drugs; a mixture of oxantel pamoate, pyrantel pamoate and praziquantel (OPP) and a mixture of pyrantel pamoate and praziquantel (PP) against hookworm and whipworm infections in dogs. A group of 13 stray dogs of both sexes and older than 1 year from the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority Compound, were selected for being naturally infected with both hookworms and whipworms. Objective: To assess the success rate of tracheoesophageal voice prosthesis as the primary mode of voice rehabilitation in patients after total laryngectomy.Methods: Medical record files of 35 patients subjected to total laryngectomy were reviewed for determining success or failure of the voice prosthesis. The indicators used were quality of speech and utility of the device. Subsequent complications that developed were also assessed. The effect of epidural ketamine was studied in 20 experimental dogs premedicated with 0.04 mg/kg atropine and 2 mg/kg xylazine, given intramuscularly along with 0.2 mg/kg acepromazine given intravenously. All dogs received, epidurally, 2 mg/kg ketamine diluted in 0.9% normal saline (NSS) in a volume of 1 ml/ 4.5 kg and, one week or more before, or later, 1 ml/ 4.5 kg NSS without ketamine as a control. Fifteen purebred (Holstein-Friesian) sires and 45 crossbred (75% up-grade Holstein-Friesian) sires from the Division of Artificial Insemination (AI), Department of Livestock Development were genotyped for the kappacasein gene by Polymerase Chain Reaction-Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Ninety six, fourteen day-old, broiler chickens were randomly divided into four groups of 24 birds. Groups 1 and 2 were orally vaccinated with live commercial intermediate-plus and intermediate infectious bursal disease (IBD) vaccines, respectively. Groups 3 and 4 served as a positive and negative non-vaccinated controls, respectively. Blood samples were collected at 14, 28 and 38 days of age for determining IBD antibody titers by an ELISA test. This study was performed to evaluate the use of preserved human amniotic membrane to repair corneal ulcers in 5 eyes of experimental dogs. A 0.45 centimetre, in diameter, trephine was used to create a corneal stroma wound which was later covered with human amniotic membrane and the third eyelid flap for 7 days. After one week, each dog had complete corneal epithelization. Corneal vascularization, photophobia and conjunctivitis and were observed in 1, 4 and 5 dogs, respectively. However, all dogs regained their normal vision.

This study evaluated the diabetes management-training program for unlicensed assistive personnel (UAP). The purpose of the program was to prepare UAP to recognize and respond to the health care needs of students diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. Twenty UAP participated. Teaching strategies were based on Albert Bandura' s social learning theory~ Two instruments were administered before and after the program. One was a 1 0-question survey addressing self-efficacy; the other was a 10 question multiple-choice test measuring knowledge of diabetes. Results of paired t tests indicate consistent and significant improvement in both perceptions of self-efficacy and knowledge (p < .05). This program provides a framework for school nurses training UAP that assist in the health care of students with diabetes. It is important that school nurses capitalize on the contribution that informed confident UAP might contribute to the provision of safe quality care to students with diabetes.

OBJECTIVES: To measure the hourly rate of patients evaluated and treated by resident physicians in an academic pediatric emergency department (PED) and examine differences in the rate by subspecialty and year of training.

METHODS: For all residents rotating in an academic, urban children's hospital PED, the rate of patients seen per hour over the course of their rotation was calculated using an electronic tracking system, EmSTAT, for calendar year 2000.
