Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) still accounts for a large incidence of infant mortality and morbidity worldwide. Many of the circulatory and transport properties of the sheep placenta are similar to those of the human placenta and as such, the pregnant sheep offers an excellent model in which to study the development of IUGR. Two natural models of ovine IUGR are those of hyperthermic exposure during pregnancy, and adolescent overfeeding, also during pregnancy. Both models yield significantly reduced placental weights and an asymmetrically growth-restricted fetus, and display altered maternal hormone concentrations, indicative of an impaired trophoblast capacity. The K1 gene of Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) encodes a transmembrane glycoprotein bearing a functional immunoreceptor tyrosine-based activation motif (ITAM). Previously, we reported that the K1 protein induced plasmablastic lymphomas in K1 transgenic mice, and that these lymphomas showed enhanced Lyn kinase activity. Here, we report that systemic administration of the nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kappaB) inhibitor Bay 11-7085 or an anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) antibody significantly reduced K1 lymphoma growth in nude mice. Furthermore, in KVL-1 cells, a cell line derived from a K1 lymphoma, inhibition of Lyn kinase activity by the Src kinase inhibitor PP2 decreased VEGF …

Jurors were surveyed on their general perceptions of the court system and factors that may cause stress immediately after trial, after participating in a post-trial debriefing, and a month after trial. Jurors had an overall positive view of the court system but did report some perceived inequities. The two most stressful elements of jury duty were related to the complexity of the trial and the decision-making involved in the trial, although jurors reported low levels of stress overall. Women reported more stress than men, and trial characteristics such as trial length also affected stress levels. The debriefing intervention was perceived …

This paper reviews current research regarding the prevalence and possible etiological factors associated with male sexual coercion, defined here as a class of inappropriate male behaviors in which nonphysical tactics (e.g., verbal pressure, lying, deceit, and continual arguments) are utilized to obtain sexual contact with an unwilling adult female. This form of sexual misconduct is contrasted with sexual aggression (i.e., forcible rape), in which the threat or use of physical force is utilized to gain sexual contact. A conceptual framework for understanding and examining sexual coercion within the broader context of male sexual misconduct is offered. This model consists of …

On Monday, March 31, 2003, a 39-year-old male (decedent) highway traffic technician, working alone, received fatal head injuries after falling out of the bucket of an aerial boom truck. Injuries sustained in the fall resulted in his death four days later. He was changing a burned-out green traffic bulb in a traffic signal suspended over 2 lanes of traffic. As he worked from the aerial lift suspended over traffic to change the burned out bulb, a cargo truck drove underneath the bucket, striking it, and causing the decedent to fall to the asphalt below. Novel synthases and the corresponding nucleic acids encoding such synthases are disclosed herein. Such synthases possess an active site pocket that includes key amino acid residues that are modified to generate desired terpenoid reaction intermediates and products. Synthase modifications are designed based on, e.g., the three-dimensional coordinates of tobacco 5-epi-aristolochene synthase. with or without a substrate bound in the active site.

A decrease in sensitivity to pleasurable stimuli, anhedonia, is a major symptom of depression in humans. Several animal models have been developed to simulate this symptom (e.g. drug withdrawal, learned helplessness) using reward-sensitive procedures such as intracranial self-stimulation and progressive ratio responding as a measure of reward function. Recently, we introduced the use of another procedure, novel-object place conditioning in rats, to measure reward function in an associative learning situation. Withdrawal from chronic nicotine blocked a place preference conditioned by access to novel objects. To be eligible to receive payment from Medicare, hospitals must be certified to meet certain conditions. Hospitals may gain such credentials by choosing to be reviewed by a state certification agency under contract to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services or to be accredited by either the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations or the American Osteopathic Association. This issue brief looks at how accreditation of hospitals developed and how it continues to change. Cone-driven responses of second-order retinal neurons are considerably faster than rod-driven responses. We examined whether differences in the kinetics of synaptic transmitter release from rods and cones may contribute to differences in postsynaptic response kinetics. Exocytosis from rods and cones was triggered by membrane depolarization and monitored in two ways: (1) by measuring EPSCs evoked in second-order neurons by depolarizing steps applied to presynaptic rods or cones during simultaneous paired whole-cell recordings or (2) by direct measurements of exocytotic increases in membrane capacitance. The kinetics of release was assessed by varying the length of the depolarizing test step. Both measures …

This research evaluates the use of Over-the-Counter anti-diarrheal medications as a potential syndromic indicator and surveillance mechanism for waterborne disease in New Mexico. The purpose was to determine the usefulness of such data for either supplemental or stand alone use in a system for waterborne disease surveillance. The use of syndromic indicators for waterborne disease was elevated in 1993 after an outbreak of cryptosporidium was detected in Milwaukee Wisconsin by an alert pharmacist who noticed increased sales of over-the-counter medications over a period of time. In 2001, terrorist threats for anthrax exposure to U.S. populations further prompted funding and research …

Utilizing recent advances in computer technology, Our Biomechanics Laboratory have made an effort to integrate computer animation and engineering analysis software into biomedical research, specifically towards simulation and animation of in vitro experimentation of the human cervical spine in the virtual world. The objectives of this study were to develop a virtual model of the human cervical spine for physics-based simulation and to apply the virtual model to studies of different surgical procedures and instrumentation.

The purpose of the present investigation was to determine the role of failure of voluntary muscle activation and muscle atrophy in theearly loss of quadriceps strength after surgery.

วัตถุประสงค์ ศึกษาอุบัติการณ์การเกิดถุงน้ําเดนติเจอรัสร่วมกับฟันคุดของฟันกรามซี่ที่สามล่าง ในกรณีที่ผ่าตัดเอาออกเพื่อป้องกันโรค วัสดุและวิธีการ ศึกษาจากพยาธิสภาพของเนื้อเยื่ออ่อนที่ยึดติดบริเวณคอฟันของฟันคุดของฟันกรามซี่ที่สามล่าง ซึ่งได้รับการผ่าออกจากผู้ป่วยจํานวน 90 ราย ผลการศึกษา อุบัติการณ์การเกิดถุงน้ําเดนเจอรัสร่วมกับฟันคุดของฟันกรามซี่ที่สามล่าง คิดเป็นร้อยละ 52.2 และถุงน้ําที่มีสภาพเทียบเคียงกับถุงน้ําเดนเจอรัส คิดเป็นร้อยละ 18.9 สรุป ฟันคุดของฟันกรามซี่ที่สามล่างควรได้รับการผ่าตัดออกเพื่อป้องกันมิให้เนื้อเยื่อรอบ ๆ คอฟันของฟันคุดมี พยาธิสภาพเกิดขึ้น (ว ทันต จุฬาฯ 2548;28:109-16)

Objective To disclose the effects of midazolam in sedation, anxiolysis, and analgesia in healthy patients undergoing surgical removal of impacted mandibular third molars. Materials and methods Each of 40 healthy patients having left and right impacted mandibular third molars underwent surgical removal in separate visits. A randomized double-blind placebo controlled method was used for prescription of a 7.5 milligram of midazolam tablet. After oral administration of the drug and local anaesthesia, the impacted teeth were removed surgically in a standard fashion. ไททาเนียมและโลหะผสมไททาเนียมได้ถูกนํามาใช้ในการทําโครงโลหะสําหรับฟันปลอมถอดได้เนื่องจาก มีสมบัติที่เหมาะสม ได้แก่ มีความแข็งแรงสูง น้ําหนักเบา ค่ามอดูลัสยืดหยุ่นต่ํา ความต้านทานต่อการกัดกร่อนสูง และมีความเข้ากันได้กับเนื้อเยื่อสูง อย่างไรก็ตาม การใช้งานฟันปลอมที่ทําจากโลหะไททาเนียมยังคงมีข้อจํากัด บางประการซึ่งเป็นสาเหตุที่ทําให้ไททาเนียมยังได้รับความนิยมน้อย ได้แก่ การหล่อแบบยาก การเปลี่ยนแปลงรูปร่าง อย่างถาวรของตะขอ การแยกตัวของฐานฟันปลอมเรซินออกจากโครงโลหะ การเปลี่ยนสีของผิวโลหะ รวมทั้ง ปัญหาการสึกของโลหะ บทความปริทัศน์นี้ได้บรรยายถึงสมบัติและการพัฒนาโลหะไททาเนียมเพื่อนํามาใช้ทํา โครงโลหะสําหรับฟันปลอมถอดได้ นอกจากนี้ ยังได้รวบรวมความแตกต่างระหว่างไททาเนียมและโลหะผสม ไททาเนียมเปรียบเทียบกับโลหะผสมโคบอลต์ โครเมียม ตลอดจนข้อได้เปรียบและข้อจํากัดในการนําโลหะไททาเนียม มาใช้ทําโครงโลหะฟันปลอมถอดได้ เพื่อเป็นแนวทางให้ทันตแพทย์สามารถพิจารณาเลือกใช้โลหะที่เหมาะสมสําหรับ ทําโครงโลหะฟันปลอมถอดได้ (ว ทันต จุฬาฯ 2548,28:155-66)

วัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อศึกษาผลของสารสกัดส่วนวุ้นและส่วนยางของว่านหางจระเข้ที่มีต่อการเพิ่มจํานวนของเซลล์สร้าง กระดูกที่แยกจากไขกระดูกหนูแรทและเซลล์ไลน์สร้างกระดูก MC3T3-E1 วัสดุและวิธีการ เซลล์จะถูกทดสอบด้วยสารสกัดส่วนวุ้นและส่วนยางของว่านหางจระเข้ ที่ความเข้มข้นต่างๆ ในอาหารเลี้ยงเซลล์ที่ปราศจากซีรัม เป็นเวลา 24 ชั่วโมง จากนั้นวัดผลต่อการเพิ่มจํานวนเซลล์ด้วยการสอบวิเคราะห์ เอ็มทีที และวิเคราะห์ผลโดยใช้สถิติวิเคราะห์ความแปรปรวนทางเดียว ผลการศึกษา สารสกัดส่วนวุ้นของว่านหางจระเข้ ที่ระดับความเข้มข้น 10, 20 และ 50 ไมโครกรัมต่อมิลลิลิตร มีผลกระตุ้นการเพิ่มจํานวนเซลล์สร้างกระดูกที่แยกจากไขกระดูกหนูแรท อย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ (p < .05) ในขณะที่สารสกัดส่วนหุ้นของว่านหางจระเข้ที่ระดับความเข้มข้น 1, 5, 10, 20 และ 50 ไมโครกรัมต่อมิลลิลิตร มีผล กระตุ้นการเพิ่มจํานวนเซลล์ไลน์สร้างกระดูก MC3T3-E1 อย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ (p < .05) แต่สารสกัดส่วนยาง ของว่านหางจระเข้ ที่ระดับความเข้มข้น 20, 40 และ 60 ไมโครกรัมต่อมิลลิลิตร มีผลลดจํานวนเซลล์สร้างกระดูกที่ แยกจากไขกระดูกหนูแรท และเซลล์ไลน์สร้างกระดูก MC3T3-E1 อย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ (p < .05) สรุป ผลการศึกษาแสดงให้เห็นว่า สารสกัดส่วนวุ้นของว่านหางจระเข้ ที่ความเข้มข้น 10-50 ไมโครกรัมต่อมิลลิลิตร และ 1-50 ไมโครกรัมต่อมิลลิลิตร มีผลอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ ในการกระตุ้นการเพิ่มจํานวนเซลล์สร้างกระดูกที่ แยกจากไขกระดูกหนูแรทและเซลล์ไลน์สร้างกระดูก MC3T3-E1 ตามลําดับ แต่สารสกัดส่วนยางของว่านหางจระเข้ ที่ระดับความเข้มข้น 20-60 ไมโครกรัมต่อมิลลิลิตร มีผลลดจํานวนเซลล์สร้างกระดูกที่แยกจากไขกระดูกหนูแรทและ เซลล์ไลน์สร้างกระดูก MC3T3-E1 อย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ (ว ทันต จุฬาฯ 2548;28:127-36)

วัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อศึกษาประสิทธิภาพของเจลโพลีแซกคาไรด์ที่สกัดจากเปลือกทุเรียนในการยับยั้งเชื้อสเตร็ปโต- คอกคัส มิวแทนส์ และเชื้อแอกติโนแบซิลลัส แอกติโนมัยซีเทมโคมิแทนส์ ในหลอดทดลอง วัสดุและวิธีการ ในการศึกษาครั้งนี้ใช้เทคนิคบรอทไดลูชัน และการวิเคราะห์แบบไทม์คิลล์ โดยเลี้ยงเชื้อ สเตร็ปโตคอกคัส มิวแทนส์ ในอาหารเหลวเลี้ยงเชื้อชนิดทริพติกซอยบรอท และเลี้ยงเชื้อแอกติโนแบซิลลัส แอกติโนมัยซีเทมโคมิแทนส์ ในอาหารเหลวเลี้ยงเชื้อชนิดเบรนฮาร์ทอินฟิวชัน ที่มีความเข้มข้นต่างๆ ของเจลโพลี- แซกคาไรด์สกัดจากเปลือกทุเรียน (1, 5, 10, 20 และ 35 มิลลิกรัมต่อมิลลิลิตร) ในตู้เพาะเลี้ยงเชื้อที่มีความเข้มข้น ของก๊าซคาร์บอนไดออกไซด์ร้อยละ 5 ที่อุณหภูมิ 37 องศาเซลเซียส เป็นเวลา 24 ชั่วโมง วิเคราะห์ผลการยับยั้ง เชื้อโดยเก็บตัวอย่างทุกๆ 4 ชั่วโมง นํามานับค่าจํานวนจุลินทรีย์ที่มีชีวิต โดยวิธีการเกลี่ยเชื้อบนอาหารเลี้ยงเชื้อ ผลการศึกษา ความเข้มข้นต่ําสุดของเจลโพลีแซกคาไรด์ที่สกัดจากเปลือกทุเรียน ที่มีผลยับยั้งเชื้อสเตร็ปโตคอกคัส มิวแทนส์ และเชื้อแอกติโนแบซิลลัส แอกติโนมัยซีเทมโคมิแทนส์ คือ 20 และ 15 มิลลิกรัมต่อมิลลิลิตร ตามลําดับ และความเข้มข้นต่ําสุดที่มีผลทําลายเชื้อสเตร็ปโตคอกคัส มิวแทนส์ และเชื้อแอกติโนแบซิลลัส แอกติโนมัยซีเทม- โคมิแทนส์ คือ 35 มิลลิกรัมต่อมิลลิลิตร ส่วนระยะเวลาในการทําลายเชื้อพบว่า ปริมาณเชื้อลดลงจนเป็นศูนย์ เมื่อ ทดสอบด้วยเจลโพลีแซกคาไรด์ที่ความเข้มข้น 35 มิลลิกรัมต่อมิลลิลิตร ในอาหารเลี้ยงเชื้อเป็นเวลา 4 ชั่วโมง สรุป เจลโพลีแซกคาไรด์ที่สกัดจากเปลือกทุเรียน ความเข้มข้น 35 มิลลิกรัมต่อมิลลิลิตร มีผลทําลายเชื้อสเตร็ปโต- คอกคัส มิวแทนส์ และเชื้อแอกติโนแบซิลลัส แอกติโนมัยซีเทมโคมิแทนส์ ขณะที่ความเข้มข้นของเจลโพลีแซกคาไรด์ ที่ความเข้มข้น 20 และ 15 มิลลิกรัมต่อมิลลิลิตร มีผลยับยั้งเชื้อสเตร็ปโตคอกคัส มิวแทนส์ และเชื้อแอกติโนแบซิลลัส แอกติโนมัยซีเทมโคมิแทนส์ ตามลําดับ (ว ทันต จุฬาฯ 2548;28:137-44)

3-Dimensional Radiographic Analysis For Orthodontics, John Huang, Axel Bumann, James Mah

This is a first of a kind attempt at a comprehensive three-dimensional orthodontic analysis based on Cone Beam CT data. It includes elements that are based in traditional orthodontic analyses which draws upon existing knowledge base, and it also includes novel approaches to the examination of volumetric 3-D perspective. The goal of this analysis is to extract pertinent details from the image volume and provide the orthodontist with clinical applications of this information. The orthodontist will then be able to better assess the patientûs malocclusion condition and develop enhanced diagnosis and treatment approaches.
