In a screen to identify genes required for mRNA export in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, we isolated an allele of poly(A) polymerase (PAP1) and novel alleles encoding several other 3′ processing factors. Many newly isolated and some previously described mutants (rna14-48, rna14-49, rna14-64, rna15-58, and pcf11-1 strains) are defective in polymerase II (Pol II) termination but, interestingly, retain the ability to polyadenylate these improperly processed transcripts at the nonpermissive temperature. Hydroxyapatite-collagen composite is a prosperous biomaterial in reconstructive surgery for the reparation of defects within human hard tissue. Within this research, three-dimensional blocks of HAp/collagen composite biomaterial were synthesized by homogenizing the HAp/collagen mixture by cold and hot (T=60oC) pressing (P=49 MPa). The changes in the system were followed by using thermal analysis (DSC & TGA), FT-IR spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The identification and kinetic analysis of appearing phase transition were done. FT-IR spectrum of the biocomposite shows that neither cold nor hot pressing had significant influence on the individual components of the composite. SEM of the fracture …

Peritoneal and pleural cavities in mice and humans contain a unique population of B-lymphocytes called B-1 cells that are defective in B cell antigen receptor (BCR) signaling but have an increased propensity to produce autoantibodies. Several molecules such as Btk, Vav, and CD19 known to be important for BCR signaling have been shown to be critical for the development of B-1 cells from undefined precursors. Here we demonstrate that B-1 cell unresponsiveness to BCR cross-linking is in part due to defective signaling through CD19, a molecule known to modulate signaling thresholds in B cells. Objective:

To determine the histological grading and muscle invasion in Transitional Cell Carcinomas of the Urinary Bladder; and to evaluate whether any correlation exists between tumour grade and muscle invasion.

Method:

A Retrospective study of all consecutive cases of Transitional Cell Carcinomas of the Urinary Bladder diagnosed at Aga Khan University Hospital between 1st Jan 1997 and 31st Dec 2000.

Results:

While physicians are likely to respond favorably in concept to hospital-based disease management and other clinical programs, they are less likely to accept their structural and functional characteristics. Because of their role at the hospital-physician interface, hospital physician executives are often tasked with implementing such programs. Given the challenges involved, a deeper understanding of the role of these executives in building the hospital-physician relationship will therefore be an important contribution. NAD(H)-dependent L-alanine dehydrogenase (EC 1.4.1.1) (Ald) catalyzes the oxidative deamination of L-alanine and the reductive amination of pyruvate. To assess the physiological role of Ald in Mycobacterium smegmatis, we cloned the ald gene, identified its promoter, determined the protein expression levels, and analyzed the combined effects of nutrient supplementation, oxygen availability, and growth stage on enzyme activity. High Ald activities were observed in cells grown in the presence of L- or D-alanine regardless of the oxygen availability and growth stage. In exponentially growing cells under aerobic conditions, supplementation with alanine resulted in a 25- to 50-fold increase in the …

Background: This study focused on the differences in incidence, mortality, epidemiology, causes, risk factors, severity, and prognosis between two groups of patients; a stroke-during-pregnancy (SDP) group and a stroke-of-young-female (SYF) group with similar physical status. The purpose of this study was to survey the handedness performance in the children with cerebral palsy (CP). One hundred and eighty two cerebral palsied children were referred for study by the primary schools in the Taipei city. Handedness Inventory with two factors was developed and sent to their parents. Response to the survey was 116 (116/182 = 64%) with 101 of them being analyzed in this study. The mean handedness quotient was 34.39. It became 53.33, 46.59, and .32 in diplegias, quadriplegias and hemiplegias, respectively. One-way analysis of variance revealed statistically significant differences among these three types. A survey of effectiveness of home based team rehabilitation at Tai-Chung City was done form January to December 2001. Nineteen subjects (76.0% of total samples) were adopted for analysis. The rehabilitation programs included intervention once per week for six months and three times evaluation of ADL function. The results showed that 1) Both the first three months home based team rehabilitation and the following three months intervention had effectiveness on Barthel ADL index; the scores improved from 42.11±27.90 to 46.32±29.67 and 51.58±30.42 after 3 months and 6 months intervention; 2) Severity had inverse correlation to the score of Barthel ADL …

Extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) has shown success in the alleviation of painful heels and other orthopedic conditions such as tennis elbow, calcifying tendinopathy of the shoulder, and nonunion fractures of the long bones. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of ESWT on chronic plantar fasciitis, and to monitor the complication of ESWT.Forty patients were enrolled in the study, however, 10 patients dropped out after first session due to intolerable pain during the course of treatment. Bilateral peripheral facial palsy (BPFP) is a rare disease. It occurs in less than one percent of patients with facial palsy. The average annual incidence rate is 0.13 to 0.2 persons per million. The etiologies of BPFP differ a little from those of unilateral peripheral facial palsy. The diagnosis depends on a series of complete examinations. We reported two cases with BPFP. One was bilateral simultaneous, and the other was bilateral alternating type. Case one was a patient with Guillain-Barre syndrome. Eight dysplastic hips of seven dogs suffering from mild hip dysplasia, as classified by the Orthopedic Foundation of Animals (OFA), were treated using a modified pelvic fixation technique. After pelvic, ischial and ilial osteotomies, the pelvis was plane-adjusted and fixed using screws to increase the acetabular coverage over the femoral head. Evaluation was made of the animals gait, by hip palpation and by taking OFA standard, ventrodorsal radiographs before and immediately after the surgical operation, followed by further evaluation 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, 16, 20 and 24 weeks later. The comparative characteristics and efficiency of these new techniques with angled hindlimbs were evaluated relative to the standard hip-extended radiographic technique. Forty, healthy, mongrel dogs with normal hip joint conformation were anesthetized and placed in dorsal recumbency before 3 radiographs of the standard, 60O, and 90O stress techniques were taken.
