The aim of this study was to investigate the possible changes in the skin structure of F1 and B1 cross-breeds, which were obtained by crossing Hampshire Downs with Akkaramans, Awassis and Konya Merinos respectively. The skin of five animals from each genotype group was used in this study. Over a period of five years and in each season, biopsy samples of various body regions (neck, flank and hip) were obtained. The results of this investigation can be summarized as follows. When compared with their pure lines, the raw skin characteristics of F1 and B1 cross-breeds of Hampshire Down x Akkaraman …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This is the first report about natural Dermatophilus congolensis infection in Turkey. Presumptive and confirmatory diagnoses were made based on clinical signs and the demonstration of the bacteria frorn scab material by direct microscopic examination and by culturing the organism on bacteriological media and identifying it by conventional methods such as biochemical reactions. The study was carried out using two groups of animals. Seventy sheep and 20 goats, 8-11 months old were included in group 1 and 155, 1-4 weeks old lambs in group 2. Ten sheep and five goats in the first group and 10 lambs in the second …

Effects Of Progesterone And Testosterone On The Hyaluronidase Activities And Sperm Characteristics In Sheep, Sadetti̇n Tanyildizi, Tanzer Bozkurt

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The aim of this study was to determine the effects of progesterone and testosterone hormones on the hyaluronidase activities of serum and semen and on sperm characteristics in sheep. Thirty healthy Akkaraman sheep were used. The progesterone and testosterone were injected intramuscularly at the rate of 0.5 mg/kg and 5 mg/kg, respectively. Then the blood and semen samples were obtained from the sheep at 1, 2, 4, 24, 48, 72 and 168 h. The serum hyaluronidase activities of ewes and rams in progesterone and testosterone groups increased significantly (p < 0.01, p < 0.001) when compared with the control groups at all times. Additionally, there were significant (p < 0.001) increases in the levels of semen hyaluronidase activity in the progesterone group except at 4 h. Furthermore, semen hyaluronidase activities in the testosterone group were detected to decrease significantly (p < 0.01) in comparison with the control rams except at 4 h. The use of progesterone and testosterone caused a significant (p < 0.05, p < 0.01) increase in spermatozoa motility, respectively. However, sperm concentrations were determined to decrease significantly (p < 0.01, p < 0.001) in both groups. Although the values for semen volume decreased significantly (p < 0.05, p < 0.01) in the progesterone group, the same values were observed to increase significantly (p < 0.01) in the testosterone group except at 48 h when compared with the control groups. The results of this study showed that there were no significant correlations between semen hyaluronidase activities and sperm characteristics. In conclusion, the use of both hormones did not have any deleterious effects on hyaluronidase activities but for the semen samples in the testosterone groups. However, progesterone and testosterone hormones cause harmful effects on the fertilization ability of rams due to decreased sperm concentration values.

The blood samples were taken from the jugular vein at 1, 2, 4, 8, 24, 48, 96 and 144 hours after the administration. Serum triiodotyronine (T3), thyroxin (T4), free triiodotironine (fT3) and free thyroxin (fT4) levels were determined using a hormone autoanalyzer. In the comparison between the groups, it was shown that serum T3 levels reached the maximum levels at the 96^{th} …

It was observed that the stratum corneum of the skin of Kıvırcık and Kıvırcık hybrids was thicker than that of Karacabey Merino and their hybrids. The deposition of lipids was seen on the surface of the epidermis of Karacabey Merino sheep and their hybrids. When compared with the other breed, it was noted …

Investigation Of The Live Weight, Body Measurements And Fiber Diameter Of The Deutsches Merinofleischschaf And Karacabey Merino Sheep Using Cluster Analysis, İsmai̇l Safa Gürcan, Hali̇l Akçapinar

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

As regards fiber diameter quality and yields, Turkish Merinos have proven successful. They have better fertility and meat yields than native species bred in Turkey. It is of significance to know the similarity degree between Turkish Merinos and Deutsches Merinofleischschaf. Various methods of statistical analysis may be employed to determine the similarity degree between related species. One of the methods to be employed is cluster analysis. In this study, the live weight, body measurements and fiber diameter of these two genotypes were determined by cluster analysis. The hierarchical clustering and SLINK techniques and Euclidean distance method were used for clustering. …

Maximising The Lamb Drop, Don Moir

Bulletins 4000 -

Although reproductive rates vary greatly between individual properties, the average marking percentage in Western Australia still hovers around 75%. In the absence of disease it is possible to improve on this figure by undertaking some straight forward management practices at different stages of the reproductive cycle.
