The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Although the domestic pig is not a true seasonal breeder, a seasonal effect on reproductive performance exists. A reduction in reproductive performance during some periods of the year is most pronounced in primiparous sows and is manifested in various ways such as, delayed puberty, prolonged weaning-to-first-service interval (WSI), increased number of sows returning to oestrus after mating, decreased conception rate, decreased farrowing rate (FR), decreased litter size and an increased incidence of abortion. The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The application of a Reverse Transcriptase-Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) on 37 canine distemper cases was performed by the amplification of the nucleo-capsid gene derived from the canine distemper virus or CDV-infected mononuclear cells (PBMCs). The animals were divided into 2 groups according to their clinical signs. The first group of animals showed signs of distemper, such as respiratory and/or digestive signs. The second group showed the same signs as first group but with nervous involvements. The findings revealed that 74.1% (20/27) of group 1 tested positive with the RT-PCR assay compared to 60% (6/10) of group 2. These results suggested …

The estimated annual incidence of gastrointestinal bleeding in the United States is approximately 100 episodes per 100,000 persons, resulting in 300,000 hospitalizations annually. Diagnostic tools such as radiologic studies and endoscopic examination often fail to identify a source of bleeding, resulting in a cycle of repetitive testing over months or even years. Costs associated with the diagnostic process, and with interim treatment for anemia and other symptoms, can be significant. The diagnostic process also takes a toll on the patient, in terms of worry, pain, and discomfort. Capsule endoscopy, a technology that received FDA clearance in August, 2001, consists of …

Objective: To study the risk factors, etiology and management of ischemic stroke in young adults in a South Asian population.

Methods: Retrospective study conducted at a large tertiary hospital in Karachi. One hundred and eighteen patients between fifteen and forty-five years admitted over a five year period with a diagnosis of ischemic infarct constituted the study population. The study variables included the full clinical spectrum, spanning historical, laboratory, radiological and outcome parameters.

Results: Forty-three percent of patients were hypertensive and 30% were diabetic. The combination of diabetes and hypertension was found in 19.5% of patients, intra-cranial and carotid …

BACKGROUND: The Blau syndrome (MIM 186580), an autosomal dominant granulomatous disease, was previously mapped to chromosome 16p12-q21. However, inconsistent physical maps of the region and consequently an unknown order of microsatellite markers, hampered us from further refining the genetic locus for the Blau syndrome. To address this problem, we constructed our own high-resolution physical map for the Blau susceptibility region. RESULTS: We generated a high-resolution physical map that provides more than 90% coverage of a refined Blau susceptibility region. Actin participates in several intracellular trafficking pathways. We now find that actin, bound to the surface of purified yeast vacuoles in the absence of cytosol or cytoskeleton, regulates the last compartment mixing stage of homotypic vacuole fusion. The Cdc42p GTPase is known to be required for vacuole fusion. We now show that proteins of the Cdc42p-regulated actin remodeling cascade (Cdc42p --> Cla4p --> Las17p/Vrp1p --> Arp2/3 complex --> actin) are enriched on isolated vacuoles. Vacuole fusion is dramatically altered by perturbation of the vacuole-bound actin, either by mutation of the ACT1 gene, addition of specific actin ligands such as latrunculin …

During atherogenesis, improper apoptosis may cause abnormalities of arterial morphogenesis, wall structural stability, and metabolisms. It has been well established that vascular cells undergo apoptosis after uptake of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (oxLDL). HIV infection has been shown to predispose patients to accelerated development of heart disease. One mechanism for this pathology may involve endothelial activation either by HIV itself or by its secreted proteins, gp120 (a viral envelope protein) and tat (a protein that upregulates transcription of viral genes). We have studied the effects of gp120 and tat on signaling and production of inflammatory cytokines by Human Pulmonary Artery Endothelial Cells (HPAEC). The large multidomain Kalirin and Trio proteins containing dual Rho GTPase guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF) domains have been implicated in the regulation of neuronal fiber extension and pathfinding during evelopment. In mammals, Kalirin is expressed predominantly in the nervous system, whereas Trio, broadly expressed throughout the body, is expressed at a lower level in the nervous system. To evaluate the role of Kalirin in fiber initiation and outgrowth, we microinjected cultured sympathetic neurons with vectors encoding Kalirin or with Kalirin antisense oligonucleotides, and we assessed neuronal fiber growth in a serum-free, satellite cell-free environment. This issue brief notes the five-year anniversary of the effective date of Title XXI of the Social Security Act, the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP). It looks at the successes of the program, as well as some of the obstacles SCHIP will face as it moves from childhood into adolescence and attempts to maintain its effectiveness in providing health coverage to uninsured children and families. The paper explores the critical funding impasse created by the downturns in the economy and the financing structure of the SCHIP statute. IL-12 is considered a critical proinflammatory cytokine for autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis and its animal model, experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE). IL-12 is a heterodimer composed of a p35 subunit and a common p40 subunit shared by other cytokines. Both IL-12 p40^–/– and p35^–/– mice fail to produce IL-12 p70 heterodimer. However, in contrast to p40^–/– mice, p35^–/– mice are highly susceptible to the induction of EAE, establishing that IL-12 p70 is not essential for the development of EAE. When compared with wild-type mice, both p40^–/– and p35^–/– mice show deficiencies in primary …

The purpose of this study was to determine the significance of the relationships between the three personal/situational variables and perceived stress, from R.E. Smith's model, and how it related to the field of athletic training (Hendrix, et al., 140).

The hypothesis for this study stated that perceived stress levels were more significantly related to hardiness and social support levels than to relevant work-related issue levels (i.e. athletic training issues) as they relate to the field of athletic training. Conversely, athletic training issues play a less significant role in perceived stress levels.

Cystic fibrosis is characterized by chronic inflammation and an imbalance in the concentrations of alveolar and lung oxidants and antioxidants, which result in cell damage. Modifications in lung glutathione concentrations are recognized as a salient feature of inflammatory lung diseases such as cystic fibrosis, and glutathione plays a major role in protection against oxidative stress and is important in modulation of apoptosis. The cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) is permeable to Cl−, larger organic ions, and reduced and oxidized forms of glutathione, and the ΔF508 CFTR mutation found in cystic fibrosis patients has been correlated with impaired glutathione transport …

Ankle bracing and taping have become widely used in recreation and athletics. Various studies have examined the effects of ankle bracing and taping on athletic performance, with mixed results. The T2 Active Ankle was created with the idea of providing a less binding external support system allowing dorsiflexion and plantarflexion, while discouraging inversion and eversion pathomechanics.
