Following the successful treatment of a bullock with white muscle disease admitted to the Internal Medicine Clinic of Fırat University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, selenium and vitamin E deficiency was ascertained in beef cattles of the same barn. Seventeen head of beef cattle randomly selected from the barn suspected of having selenium and vitamin E deficiency and 10 clinically healthy head of beef cattle from a different barn were used. This study was conducted to determine the effects of defaunation and zinc on weight gain, mohair production and quality as well as on some parameters related to blood and rumen contents in Angora goats. In this study, whole blood potassium and haemoglobin (Hb) polymorphism were investigated in the Hair goats raised in the Antalya province. The separation of erythrocyte haemoglobin types was carried out using horizontal starch-gel electrophoresis and the determination of the potassium level was done using an atomic absorption spectrometer in randomly chosen whole blood samples of 188 Hair goats. The gene frequency for the higher potassium (KH) was 0.985±0.038. As a result of this research, two haemoglobin gene alleles (HbA, HbB) were determined. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate ensiling methods for more efficient and long-lasting preservation of sugar beet pulp, which is an energy-rich cheap feedstuff. The microbiological and chemical qualities of kurut, which is made from dried yoghurt with solar heat in some rural regions of Anatolia, were studied. For this aim 25 kurut samples from the Elazığ area were investigated. Colony forming units of mesophile aerobes, coliform, Staphylococcus-Micrococcus, Lactobacillus-Leuconostoc-Pediococcus, Lactococcus, yeast and mould on average were 3.40x104/g, 2.79 x 102/g, 2.40 x 103/g, 2.23 x 104/g, 1.13 x 104/g and 1.12 x 104/g respectively. In this study, forty 2-2.5 months pregnant sheep naturally infected with gastrointestinal nematodes and lungworms were used. These sheep were divided into two equal groups according to the epgs per gram (EPG) present in the faeces and were kept indoors. In order to determine the genus and species and the rates of gastrointestinal nematodes, faecal cultures were prepared. This study was carried out to detect the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in cattle in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Serum samples obtained from 98 cattle of different regions and age groups were tested for T.gondii antibodies by the Sabin-Feldman and Indirect Flourescent Antibody tests. According to the results of the SF test, 34 animals (34.69%), and according to the results of the IFA test 30 (30.61%) animals were found to be seropositive. Statistical evaluations showed that the results of the two tests were in agreement with each other.

In this study, the electrocardiographic parameters necessary to determine cardiac enlargements and to establish and distinguish such complaints from each other in the early stage in dogs with circulatory problems were assessed. The material of the study consisted of 33 dogs 1.5-15 years of age with cardiac enlargements determined from 140 dogs suspected of having cardiac disease based on clinical, radiographic and electrocardiographic analyses. This study was carried out on isobrown chicks fed from one day old on a diet containing 1% hot red pepper. Lenfoid infiltration and hyperemic areas in the parenchym, and hypertrophy in most of the glomeruli were observed. A thickening and adhesion of parietal and visceral sheets was observed in the glomeruli of some of the experimental groups. The average glomerulus diameter of the experimental groups was much more than that of the control groups, and these differences were thought to be statistically significant.

The objective of the present study was to mature and fertilize primary sheep oocytes in vitro and to develop them to the blastocyst stage. Ovaries from slaughtered Kıvırcık ewes were used. In this study, echocardiograpic examination was performed on 20 healthy New Zealand rabbits. All rabbits were examined by the color Doppler technique using a 5-7.5 Mhz transducer. Images were obtained from parasternal long axis, parasternal short axis, apical four-chamber and modified four-chamber sections. The anatomy and function of hearts were examined in each rabbit individually. The values obtained were not significantly different from those obtained in dogs and cats. In addition, the changes seen in the right ventricle parameters were consistent with the changes in the left ventricle parameters.

This study was conducted to determine the fattening performance of Sönmez type lambs weaned on average at 60±5 days old. Sixty lambs were put into four different pens, as single males (15), single females (15), twin males (15) and twin females (15), and the fattening period was 56 days in length. The daily weight gains were 282.14 g, 242.49 g, 207.31 g and 179.99 g for single males, single females, twin males and twin females, respectively. This study was carried out in order to determine the species diversity, abundance, and distribution and seasonal frequency occurrence times of the eggs and larvae of Teleost fish in Izmir Bay during 1989-1990. A total of 32140 eggs and 6582 larvae were collected from plankton samples and 69 species belonging to 27 families were identified. In this paper, four diagnostic techniques were compared in terms of their ability to detect BVD virus in buffy coats frozen for more than one year. The samples were selected according to their initial test results. Forty-five BVDV positive and 15 BVDV negative buffy coats were used. The techniques used were the virus isolation-immunoperoxidase test (IPX), immunoperoxidase monolayer assay (IPMA), indirect immunoperoxidase monolayer assay (IIPMA) and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). The Effect Of Long-Term Supplemental Dietary Cadmium On Lipid Peroxidation And The Antioxidant System In The Liver And Kidneys Of Rabbits, Ebru Beytut, Mesut Aksakal

We investigated the effects of chronic exposure to dietary cadmium (Cd) on the levels of lipid peroxidation (LPO) and reduced glutathione (GSH) associated with activities of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and the catalase (CAT) enzyme in the liver and kidneys of rabbits. Twenty 10-month-old clinically healthy New Zealand white rabbits (10/group) of 3545 ± 250 g average body weight were used. The control group was allowed to take food and tap water ad libitum, while the experimental group was given tap water containing 200 ppm CdCl_2/L for 28 weeks. Lipid peroxidation contents increased significantly in the liver (p < 0.001) and kidneys (p < 0.005) of Cd-treated rabbits. Glutathione levels decreased significantly in both the liver (p < 0.001) and the kidneys (p < 0.005) of the experimental group. Cadmium treatment caused a significant decrease in the activities of GSH-Px and CAT in the liver (p < 0.001, p < 0.01) and kidneys (p < 0.005, p < 0.1) of the rabbits. These results indicated that a Cd-induced increase in LPO was associated with reductions in GSH-Px and CAT enzyme activities, and in GSH levels in the liver and kidneys of rabbits.

During recent decades, the study of fatty acids (FAs) belonging to the n-3 family in seafood has intensified due to their beneficial effect on cardiovascular disease. This study was undertaken to determine the FA composition of muscle lipids of three different farm raised trouts (Salvelinus alpinus, Salmo trutta fario and Oncorhynchus mykiss) fed the same diet and raised under the same conditions. Palmitic acid (16:0) in total saturated fatty acid (SFA) and oleic acid (18:1 n-9) in monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) were the most abundant FAs and significant differences (P < 0.05) were observed between fish species. The differences in total SFA among the trouts were significant (P < 0.01), and O. mykiss had the highest (31.92%) SFA content while S. trutta fario showed the lowest in their edible muscle tissue. However, there was a significantly (P < 0.01) opposite observation for MUFA among the trouts, in which S. trutta fario had the highest content (41.90%) of MUFA in their muscle tissue while O. mykiss had the lowest (30.81%). In this study, the capture efficiencies and catch rates of three different traps were compared for the blue crab Callinectes sapidus in Beymelek Lagoon, Antalya, Turkey. All gear was used simultaneously and in the same habitats. The mean catch per unit effort (CPUE) was determined to be significantly higher for hoop nets than for traps. Gear effectiveness was examined by comparing CPUE (CPUE as number of crab per trap per haul, and g per trap haul), mean weight of individual crabs, catch composition and width frequency distributions of the blue crab for each gear.

Fish were exposed to three different sublethal doses in order to determine the effects of Cypermethrin on some biochemical parameters (Ca-Calcium, P-Phosphorus, Na-Sodium and TP-Total Protein) of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). After 15 days exposure, Ca and P decreased, while TP and Na took various values depending on the doses of synthetic pyrethroid.

Thymic nurse cells are isolated thymic epithelial/thymocyte complexes described in vitro. Their in vivo existence is controversial. We examined rat thymi in order to distinguish thymic nurse cells in vivo using the zinc iodide-osmium tetroxide (ZIO) fixation/staining technique. There were mainly two types of strongly ZIO reactive cells in the thymic cortex: macrophages and small clusters of thymic epithelial cells. The latter group was composed of thymic epithelial cells and intact thymocytes forming complexes. Thus we suggest that these structures are in situ equivalents of thymic nurse cells.

In this study, the detection of canine parvovirus (CPV) in a fecal sample from a dog with enteritis was performed for the first time using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in Turkey. The final PCR product was analyzed using the restriction fragment length polymorphysm (RFLP) technique. RFLP analysis using Apa LI and Eco RV restriction endonucleases revealed homology in the nucleotide sequence in at least the VP2 coding region of the virus DNAs detected in the fecal specimen and prepared from attenuated vaccine virus as a positive control.

In this study, the histopathology of enzootic epidermal papillomas in cage cultured mirror carp from the Liman region of Eğirdir Lake was investigated. Macroscopically, the lesions were creamy-white, had a villus-like structure and were localised in the operculum, lateral line and fins. Histopathological studies showed that lesions were the result of hyperplasia of fibrous connective tissue and epidermal tissues. The cells of both tissues were faintly stained by HxE and PAS. Under light microscopy, cytoplasmic vacuolation in epidermal cells in the lesions was prominent. Mucous cells were relatively common and larger than normal. Chemotherapy effectively cured all lesions.
