This study was carried out to determine the effect of lactic acid bacterial inoculants as silage additives on the fermentation, aerobic stability, and in situ rumen degradability of maize (Zea mays) and sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) silages. Maize was harvested at dent and sorghum was harvested at milk dough stages of maturity. Inoculant 1188 (Pioneer®, USA), H/M F Inoculant No. 9927 (Medipharm, USA), and Lacticil M 74 (Medipharm, Sweden) were used as lactic acid bacterial inoculants. Sero-Prevalance Of Toxoplasma Gondii By The Sabin-Feldman And Indirect Flourescent Antibody Tests In Cattle In The Turkish Republic Of Northern Cyprus, Serpi̇l Nalbantoğlu, Zati̇ Vatansever, Ahmet Deni̇z, Cahi̇t Babür, Ayşe Çakmak, K. Zafer Karaer, Ersan Korudağ

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was carried out to detect the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii in cattle in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. Serum samples obtained from 98 cattle of different regions and age groups were tested for T.gondii antibodies by the Sabin-Feldman and Indirect Flourescent Antibody tests. According to the results of the SF test, 34 animals (34.69%), and according to the results of the IFA test 30 (30.61%) animals were found to be seropositive. Statistical evaluations showed that the results of the two tests were in agreement with each other.

Changes in \alpha-amylase activity of the pancreas, plasma, crop tissue and crop content related to age and sex were determined in chicks and the correlation among the pancreas, plasma, crop tissue and crop content were investigated. In this study, the effects of supplementation of zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) to the ration on some blood metabolites of merino lambs were investigated. This study was performed to investigate the effects of sodium lactate on the microbiological quality and shelf-life of raw meatballs. For this purpose, 0.5%, 1.0% and 2.0% sodium lactate were added to the batter of Inegol meatballs that were prepared in accordance with traditional methods. The samples of meatballs were packed after being shaped and then were stored in a refrigerator for ten days. Determination Of Some Haematological Parameters In Spotted Barb (Capoeta Barroisi Lortet, 1894) And Roach (Rutilus Rutilus, Linnaeus, 1758) Living In Seyhan River (Adana City Region), Aysel Şahan, İbrahi̇m Cengi̇zler

This study was conducted in Seyhan River between May 1997 and May 1998. Basic haematological parameters and effects of seasonal differences on these parameters were determined in Roach (Rutilus rutilus, Linnaeus, 1758) and Spotted Barb (Capoeta barroisi, Lortet, 1894) species which had adapted to water polluted by agricultural, industrial and domestic wastes. The waste of slaughterhouses also flowed into the region. The results of the study showed that there were deviations from standard values for most of the haematological parameters for R. rutilus indicating that R. rutilus individuals were affected by environmental stress factors more than those of C. barroisi.

This study was performed to investigate the presence of Eimeria species in the sheep population of Van. Stool samples were collected from 350 sheep in 10 geographically distinct locations (Van-centre, Saray, Çaldıran, Erçek, Edremit, Gürpınar and Güveçli, Bardakçı, Alaköy, Kavuncu villages) in Van province. Nine different Eimeria species were found in the examination of the stool samples. These species were E. parva (46.57%), E. ovinoidalis (43.14%), E. ahsata (39.42%), E. ovina (39.14%), E. crandallis (38.85%), E. pallida (33.14%), E. granulosa (16.57%) E. faurei (15.42%) and E. intricata (11.42%).

In this study, the electrocardiographic parameters necessary to determine cardiac enlargements and to establish and distinguish such complaints from each other in the early stage in dogs with circulatory problems were assessed. The material of the study consisted of 33 dogs 1.5-15 years of age with cardiac enlargements determined from 140 dogs suspected of having cardiac disease based on clinical, radiographic and electrocardiographic analyses. In this study, chemical and sensory changes were investigated in pike-perch (Sander lucioperca Bogustkaya & Naseka,1996) fillets during frozen storage (-18 ºC) of 7 months. Total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N, mg N/100 g), thiobarbituric acid (TBA, mg malonaldehyde/1000 g) and pH were considered as chemical quality criteria of fish flesh. TVB-N value was 4.19 mg N/100 g at the beginning, but increased to 14.90 mg N/100 g at the end of the research. This study was carried out on isobrown chicks fed from one day old on a diet containing 1% hot red pepper. Lenfoid infiltration and hyperemic areas in the parenchym, and hypertrophy in most of the glomeruli were observed. A thickening and adhesion of parietal and visceral sheets was observed in the glomeruli of some of the experimental groups. The average glomerulus diameter of the experimental groups was much more than that of the control groups, and these differences were thought to be statistically significant.

The objective of the present study was to mature and fertilize primary sheep oocytes in vitro and to develop them to the blastocyst stage. Ovaries from slaughtered Kıvırcık ewes were used. The ovaries were transported to the laboratory in a vacuum flask in which 30-35 °C PBS (phosphate buffered saline) was included. Evaluation Of Echocardiographic Findings Via Doppler Technique In Rabbits, Melahat Toker, Vedat Sağmanligi̇l

In this study, echocardiograpic examination was performed on 20 healthy New Zealand rabbits. All rabbits were examined by the color Doppler technique using a 5-7.5 Mhz transducer. Images were obtained from parasternal long axis, parasternal short axis, apical four-chamber and modified four-chamber sections. The anatomy and function of hearts were examined in each rabbit individually. The values obtained were not significantly different from those obtained in dogs and cats. In addition, the changes seen in the right ventricle parameters were consistent with the changes in the left ventricle parameters.

Considering the relation between the endocrine and immune systems, the effects of zeranol, a synthetic oestrogen compound, on the growth rate and nonspecific immune system in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss, Walbaum) were investigated. This study was conducted to determine the fattening performance of Sönmez type lambs weaned on average at 60±5 days old. Sixty lambs were put into four different pens, as single males (15), single females (15), twin males (15) and twin females (15), and the fattening period was 56 days in length. The daily weight gains were 282.14 g, 242.49 g, 207.31 g and 179.99 g for single males, single females, twin males and twin females, respectively. A total of 175 samples, consisting of 100 pudding samples (sütlaç 25, keşkül 30, supangile 25, kazandibi 20) and 75 cream pastries (butter-cream 25, chocolate-cream 25, fruit-cream 25), were analysed. This study is based on the examination of 759 chubs from Karasu River (40° 45´ 33´´ E, 39° 56´ 16´´ N) between November 1995 and October 1997. The effects of various salinities and fresh water (FW) (0.4 ppt) on the growth performance, body traits and fillet composition of juvenile and young sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) in FW were investigated in two separate experiments in this study. In Experiment 1, following acclimation, sea bass juveniles (9.5 ± 0.5 g) were reared in 240-L fibreglass tanks (40 x 40 x 150 cm) for 90 days in five different treatments (FW, 10, 20, 30 and 40 ppt). Comparison Of In Vitro Dry Matter Degradation Of Four Maize Silages Using The Menke Gas Production Method, Adem Kamalak, Yavuz Gürbüz, Heather Finlayson

Four maize silages from the UK and France were evaluated using the gas production method to estimate the rate and extent of dry matter degradation in vitro. There were significant differences in gas production after 17 h incubation. The silages showed similar times to produce 50, 95 and 100% of total gas production, whereas the lag time for Ema was significantly (P < 0.001) lower than that for Volgate. The potential gas production value (a + b) for Nancis was significantly (P < 0.05) lower than that for Volgate. There was a significant correlation (r = 0.996, R^2 = 90.71, P < 0.001) between gas production and total VFA production. There were considerable differences in the fermentability of carbohydrates between different maize silages. Nancis and Ema had more readily fermentable carbohydrate, which yielded high propionate production and a shorter lag time. 6196 and Volgate had more slowly fermentable carbohydrate, which did become available to microorganisms but after a longer lag time.

In this study, the anaesthetic effects and reliability of the combination of etomidate, which is a non-barbiturate injectable anaesthetic, and alfentanil, which is a strong narcotic analgesic, in anaesthesia induction in dogs were investigated. The Effect Of Concentrate Feeding Levels On The Postweanining Performance Of Holstein Friesian Calves, Mete Yanar, Olcay Güler, Bahri̇ Bayram

The influences of different levels of concentrate on the growth characteristics of Holstein Friesian calves reared under an original calf-rearing program were investigated in this study. Forty-one new-born calves (20 male and 21 female) were allocated to the four concentrate groups: 2, 2.5, 3 kg/calf and ad libitum. The calves were weaned at 5 weeks of age, and the trial lasted for 6 months. The results with regard to weights at 6 months of age revealed that an increasing amount of concentrate supplementation resulted in a significantly (P < 0.01) higher live weight. Furthermore, daily weight gains between birth and 6 months of age was also significantly higher (P < 0.01) in the ad libitum group than in the 2, 2.5 and 3 kg/day groups. The highest overall gains in body measurements, for example body length and heart girth, were obtained from calves fed concentrate ad libitum. However, feed efficiency ratios were not significantly influenced by the various amounts of concentrate offered to calves. The overall results suggest that the appropriate level of concentrate for the new calf-rearing program should be ad libitum.

This is the first report about natural Dermatophilus congolensis infection in Turkey. Presumptive and confirmatory diagnoses were made based on clinical signs and the demonstration of the bacteria frorn scab material by direct microscopic examination and by culturing the organism on bacteriological media and identifying it by conventional methods such as biochemical reactions.
