B(a)P is a mutagenic, carcinogenic and teratogenic substance. Paclitaxel and doxorubicin are antineoplastic drugs widely used in cancer treatment. The purpose of this study is to observe the effects of doxorubicin and paclitaxel on p170 glycoprotein in rat liver and kidney tissue after administration of B(a)P. As is well known, p170 glycoprotein is an indicator of drug resistance. We hypothesized that a combination of these antineoplastic drugs would cause lower p170 levels and thus would have a stronger effect than single drug administration. This study was carried out in the Health Research Center (DÜSAM) laboratory of Dicle University. Vitamin E, Selenium and Allopurinol were given to counteract gastric damage caused by stress in rats. In the study 64 male Sprague dawley rats were used. They were divided into 8 groups, and protective agents were applied at different doses for 8 weeks. Then, performing cold-restraint stress stomach tissues were taken out and investigated macroscopically to determine mucosal damage. H. influenzae is a fastidious bacteria, so the selection of a reliable method for in-vitro susceptibility tests is particularly important. The E-test is a practical method for detecting in-vitro antimicrobial susceptibility of antibiotics by MIC values. This study was performed using the E-test for direct patient management and in order to obtain epidemiological data on H. influenzae. The detection of antimicrobial agent resistance among fifty-seven H. influenzae isolates from lower respiratory tract infections in childhood was studied by the E-test. Genetic alterations in proto-oncogenes or tumour suppressor genes are believed to be one of the key events in the multistage process of carcinogenesis. Activating point mutations occurring in either one of the three ras proto-oncogene families are common genetic alterations in human and animal neoplasms. However, the mechanisms leading to oral cancer are not completely understood. The expression of major histocompatibility antigens class II (MHC II) in renal diseases has been studied extensively in the tubulo-interstitial compartment, while there are few articles about their expression in the glomeruli. In this series, glomerular expression of HLA DR DP DQ is evaluated in a total of 62 cases of pyelonephritis, glomerulonephritis, tubulointerstitial nephritis and systemic diseases with renal manifestations in order to identify their relationship with disease status and renal scarring. Absorption of zinc by preterm infants from a synthetic milk labelled extrinsically with 70Zn tracer was determined by faecal monitoring. Six male preterm babies with a mean gestational age of 31±2.9 weeks and a mean birth weight of 1.23±0.24 kg were studied for three balance periods of 72 h with intervals ranging from 6 to 30 days. The babies were fed with the milk containing zinc with added 70Zn tracer. Chronic inflammatory gingival enlargement (CIGE) occasionally exhibits some similarities with hemangioma (Hm) by means of the clinical and histopathological features of gingiva. When compared with hemangioma, CIGE is more frequently encountered by the dental profession. However, Hm is rarely seen on gingiva and it has a non-inflammatory nature and mostly congenital origin. From prokaryotes to eukaryotes or from invertebrates to vertebrates, all organisms have developed various adaptive mechanisms to survive within a wide range of growth temperatures. An important part of the cold adaptation mechanism occurs at the level of the cytoplasmic membrane. Cold shock affects the membrane composition and organisation to maintain the optimum membrane function. Cold shock also affects cell division. The temperature downshift results in a growth lag. During the lag phase the organism changes the composition of the cytoplasmic membrane and synthesis sets of specific proteins called cold shock proteins or cold induced proteins.

Anionic sites on bacterial envelopes of Streptococcus \beta-haemolyticus and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 P were investigated on materials fixed with Karnovsky fixative containing the cationic dyes ruthenium red (RR) or alcian blue (AB). Electron dense granules and short fibrils were found to be irregularly distributed around the cells on the glycocalyces of both genera. An electron dense stained reaction with RR or AB on the cell membrane and glycocalyx indicates the presence of rich anionic sites on these structures. Electron microscopic observations demonstrate that anionic sites in the glycocalyx are responsible for the adherence phenomenon during the formation of microcolonies. …

The aim of this study was to investigate the systemic humoral and cell-mediated immune system parameters, and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) immunoreactivity in non-convulsive absence epilepsy and pentylenetetrazole (PTZ)- induced generalized tonic-clonic seizures. The effect of cigarette smoking on the fractal organisation of the heartbeat regulating system was investigated by power spectral analysis. The heart rate variability (HRV) signal was obtained from the consecutive RR intervals of ECG. Power law behaviour of 1/f\beta type was studied to assess the fractal organisation of the heartbeat. Corticosteroids, widely used in the treatment of collagen tissue diseases, increase the number of neutrophils and decrease the total numbers of lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils and basophils. In addition, corticosteroids alter important functional activities of both lymphocytes and monocytes. They suppress the bactericidial activities of phagocytes. In this manner, the resistance to infections is reduced. Cytotoxic drugs can have profound effects on the production and function of both phagocyte cells and lymphocytes. Caudate hemorrhage is a rare stroke syndrome that accounts for only 3-7% of all primary intracerebral hematomas. In this study, we evaluated eight patients with isolated caudate nucleus hemorrhage for their clinical presentation and neurological findings. Material and methods: Eight patients, who were admitted to our department with isolated caudate nucleus hemorrhage, were evaluated for their clinical presentation and present risk factor findings on neurological examination and prognosis. Cast alloys used in dentistry come into close and prolonged contact with the gingiva and the oral mucosa, and certain alloys have been claimed to cause inflammation of gingival and periodontal tissues. However, only little information is available on the molecules mediating the mechanism of such an effect. The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of PAF antagonist BN52021 on systemic and renal oxidative stress in experimentally induced obstructive jaundice. A total of 30 Wistar-Albino type rats used in the study were divided into sham, control and study groups, each consisting of ten subjects. A laparotomy was performed on the study and control groups, and the choledochus was ligated and dissected. In the sham group, the choledochus was dissected by laparotomy and not ligated. Purpose: The aim this study was to investigate the effects of different suture techniques on the healing of abdominal wall wound. Materials and Methods: 24 male Wistar albino rats were included in this study. The rats were divided into two groups. A 4 cm midline laparatomy was performed after ketamine HCl anesthesia. In Group I, the incision was sutured with 4/0 polypropylene interruptedly and in Group II, the wound was closed with 4/0 polypropylene continuously.
