Programmed cell death (PCD), or apoptosis, is initiated in response to various stimuli, including virus infection. Bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) induces PCD in peripheral blood mononuclear cells at the G₀/G₁ phase of the cell cycle (E. Hanon, S. Hoornaert, F. Dequiedt, A. Vanderplasschen, J. Lyaku, L. Willems, and P.-P. Pastoret, Virology 232:351–358, 1997). However, penetration of virus particles is not required for PCD (E. Hanon, G. Meyer, A. Vanderplasschen, C. Dessy-Doize, E. Thiry, and P. P. OBJECTIVE:

Socioeconomic status is an important determinant of health outcome measures. This study examines and presents some of the important health outcomes amongst the higher and lower socioeconomic groups within the urban poor.

SETTING:

Data analysis is based on a Health and Demographic Survey conducted in urban squatter settlements of Karachi in 1996.

METHODS:

A structured questionnaire was administered to all households in the catchment area. The indicator used to assess economic status is ownership of assets.

การทำแท้งในสังคมไทยเป็นการกระทําที่ไม่ได้รับการยอมรับทั้งทางกฎหมาย ศีลธรรม และ ทางสังคม แต่มีหญิงตั้งครรภ์จำนวนมากลักลอบทำแท้งโดยยอมเสี่ยงอันตรายต่อชีวิต เสี่ยงต่อการถูก \nจับและเสี่ยงต่อการถูกประณามจากสังคม การศึกษานี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อหาคำอธิบายเกี่ยวกับเงื่อนไขที่นําไปสู่การตั้งครรภ์ไม่พึงปรารถนาและกระบวนการตัดสินใจทำแท้ง วิธีการศึกษาใช้การสัมภาษณ์ ระดับลึกจากหญิงตั้งครรภ์ จำนวน 58 ราย เป็นหญิงที่ตัดสินใจทำแท้ง 38 ราย และหญิงที่ ตัดสินใจตั้งครรภ์ต่อไป 20 ราย ผลการศึกษาโดยสรุป ค่านิยมและบรรทัดฐานทางสังคมไทยในเรื่อง มาตรฐานซ้อนทางเพศและความสัมพันธ์ทางเพศที่ไม่เสมอภาคระหว่างชายหญิง เป็นเงื่อนไขสำคัญ นำไปสู่การตั้งครรภ์ไม่พึงปรารถนา หากผู้หญิงพิจารณาแล้วว่าการตั้งครรภ์ที่เกิดขึ้นจะส่งผลกระทบต่อ ชีวิตให้ได้รับความเสียหายมากกว่าผลดี ผู้หญิงมีแนวโน้มที่จะตัดสินใจเลือกทำแท้งมากกว่าตั้งครรภ์ต่อไป

Objective: To compare advanced practice nurses' (APNs) and physicians' (MDs) domestic violence screening behaviors, perceived obstacles, and knowledge base so as to determine the efficacy of the collaborative practice model of care. Design: The survey questionnaires were the "Nurse Practitioners' Experience with Partner Abuse in Alaska" and the "Physicians' Experience with Partner Abuse in Alaska". Significant differences were evaluated by using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). Setting: Two 200-300 bed urban HMO medical centers. The purpose of this study was to examine the behavior, attitudes, and knowledge regarding tobacco use of students enrolled in orientation courses in Tennessee community colleges. The six community colleges selected for the study were members of the Tennessee Board of Regents system that offered mandatory orientation courses. Data were collected by use of the College Tobacco Behavior, Attitude, and Knowledge Survey . A response rate of (72.5%) from 700 students was analyzed. การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาความสุขสมบูรณ์ของนักศึกษาพยาบาล วิทยาลัยพยาบาล สังกัดกระทรวงสาธารณสุข หาความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างการดำเนินการด้านกิจการนักศึกษา และด้าน สภาพแวดล้อมของวิทยาลัยกับความสุขสมบูรณ์ของนักศึกษาพยาบาลและศึกษาตัวแปรที่ร่วมกันพยากรณ์ ความสุขสมบูรณ์ของนักศึกษาพยาบาล กลุ่มตัวอย่างเป็นนักศึกษาพยาบาลจำนวน 604 คน ได้จากการ สุ่มแบบชั้นภูมิ เครื่องมือในการวิจัยคือ แบบสอบถามการดําเนินการด้านกิจการนักศึกษา แบบสอบถาม สภาพแวดล้อมของวิทยาลัย และแบบวัดความสุขสมบูรณ์ของนักศึกษา ได้รับข้อมูลในการวิเคราะห์ ร้อยละ 97.85 วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลโดยการวิเคราะห์ถดถอยพหุคูณ \nผลการวิจัยสรุปได้ดังนี้ ค่าเฉลี่ยของคะแนนความสุขสมบูรณ์โดยรวมและรายด้านของนักศึกษา พยาบาลอยู่ในระดับปานกลาง งานวินัยนักศึกษา งานกิจกรรมนักศึกษา งานบริการหอพักนักศึกษา สภาพแวดล้อมที่มีชีวิต สภาพแวดล้อมที่ไม่มีชีวิต และสภาพทางจิตสังคม มีความสัมพันธ์ทางบวก กับความสุขสมบูรณ์โดยรวมของนักศึกษาพยาบาลอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ .01 ตัวแปรที่ร่วม กันพยากรณ์ความสุขสมบูรณ์ของนักศึกษาพยาบาลได้อย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติมีความสำคัญตาม ลำดับดังนี้ สภาพแวดล้อมทางจิตสังคม และสภาพแวดล้อมที่มีชีวิต โดยร่วมกันพยากรณ์ ความสุข สมบูรณ์ของนักศึกษาพยาบาลได้ร้อยละ 11.70

A Jungian interpretation of The Waste Land was undertaken in this thesis. The symbolic underpinnings of the poem were found to resonate with archetypal significance. A comparative study of key ideas developed by C. G. Jung and T. S. Eliot was adopted in order to illuminate the psychological aspects of the poem. The theme of individuation and the archetypes which accompany it were revealed in the symbolic imagery of The Waste Land. The emotional tenor of Eliot's disposition and the philosophical direction of his thinking at the time The Waste Land was written were found to correlate with and parallel …

This study specifically explored the perceived importance of the following nonverbal factors in the negotiation process: proxemics (location and negotiation site), physical arrangement (seating and furniture arrangement), and kinesics (eye contact, facial expressions and gestures). The findings show that the negotiators' perception about the three categories and their role in negotiation are consistent with nonverbal communication theory.

The detection of malingered neuropsychological impairments is an essential issue for mental health professionals. Acculturation level and performance of Mexican Americans on the Computerized Assessment of Response Bias, (CARB), was investigated in the present study. The CARB was administered to 89 subjects comprised of 51 student volunteers and 38 community volunteers. There were 41 males and 48 females, with ages ranging from 18 to 46 years of age. All subjects were instructed to try their best to "fake" a memory deficit. The purpose was to explore perceptions of pregnant and parenting substance abusing women in an outpatient drug treatment program regarding provider and social support. Also identified were aspects of the rehabilitation program perceived by the women as assisting them to maintain abstinence from substance use. Data were collected through a demographic questionnaire and a tool designed by the authors based on the Social Stress Model of Substance Abuse (Lindenberg, Gendrop, & Reiskin, 1993) and the literature of social support. The present study was done to find out the frequency of malignant tumors of bone and to categorize the prevelence of various histological types of osseous malignancies with respect to age, sex and site of origin.

Setting:

This study included consecutive cases of malignant bone tumors, which were diagnosed in the department of pathology at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi during the period of three years (1995-1997).

Methods:

These tumors were initially evaluated on H & E stained section from paraffin embedded tissue blocks. Special stains and immunohistochemical analysis was performed whenever required.

Recently maternal intake of multivitamins has been associated with a reduced risk of orofacial clefts (OFC) in human epidemiologic studies. In the Philippines, vitamin B-6 deficiency was found to be associated with increased risk of OFCs. The birth prevalence of OFCs in the Philippines is among the highest known, but Filipino emigrants in the United States have lower rates, indicating that environmental factors may play an important role in causing OFCs in the Philippines.

Exogenous recombinant human transforming growth factor beta-1 (TGF-beta1) induced long-term facilitation of Aplysia sensory-motor synapses. In addition, 5-HT-induced facilitation was blocked by application of a soluble fragment of the extracellular portion of the TGF-beta1 type II receptor (TbetaR-II), which presumably acted by scavenging an endogenous TGF-beta1-like molecule. Because TbetaR-II is essential for transmembrane signaling by TGF-beta, we sought to determine whether Aplysia tissues contained TbetaR-II and specifically, whether neurons expressed the receptor. Western blot analysis of Aplysia tissue extracts demonstrated the presence of a TbetaR-II-immunoreactive protein in several tissue types. The effect of a high carbohydrate (HCHO) or high fat (HF) diet on time to fatigue and mood state was examined in the present study. Six untrained males, (mean age 26.6 ± 0.74) were randomly assigned to a high fat (HF) or a HCHO diet for seven days. Subjects performed an endurance test at 55% of VO₂max following the diet. Time to fatigue and psychometric variables of the Profile of Mood States (POMS) were recorded.
