Four Clinical Tests Of Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction: The Association Of Test Results With Innominate Torsion Among Patients With And Without Low Back Pain, Pamela Levangie

All PTHMS Faculty Publications

Background and Purpose. The purpose of this study was to assess the association between innominate torsion (asymmetric anteroposterior positioning of the pelvic innominates) and the Gillet, standing forward flexion, sitting forward flexion, and supine-to-sit tests. Subjects. A sample of 21- to 50-year-old patients with low back pain (n=150) and a comparison group of patients with upper-extremity impairments (n=138) were recruited from outpatient physical therapy facilities. Methods. The association of single and combined test results with innominate torsion (calculated from pelvic landmark data) and with presence or absence of low back pain were estimated via odds ratios, sensitivities, specificities, and predictive …

Physical Violence During Pregnancy: Maternal Complications And Birth Outcomes, Vilma E. Cokkinides, Ann L. Coker, Maureen Sanderson, Cheryl Addy, Lesa Bethea May 1999

Physical Violence During Pregnancy: Maternal Complications And Birth Outcomes, Vilma E. Cokkinides, Ann L. Coker, Maureen Sanderson, Cheryl Addy, Lesa Bethea

CRVAW Faculty Journal Articles

Objective: To assess the association between physical violence during the 12 months before delivery and maternal complications and birth outcomes.

Methods: We used population-based data from 6143 women who delivered live-born infants between 1993 and 1995 in South Carolina. Data on women's physical violence during pregnancy were based on self-reports of partner-inflicted physical hurt and being involved in a physical fight. Outcome data included maternal antenatal hospitalizations, labor and delivery complications, low birth weights, and preterm births. Odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals were calculated to measure the associations between physical violence, maternal morbidity, and birth outcomes.

Results: The prevalence …

Pregnant Rat Uterus Expresses High Levels Of The Type 3 Iodothyronine Deiodinase, Valerie Anne Galton, Elena Martinez, Arturo Hernandez, Emily A. St. Germain, Joanne M. Bates, Donald L. St. Germain Apr 1999

Pregnant Rat Uterus Expresses High Levels Of The Type 3 Iodothyronine Deiodinase, Valerie Anne Galton, Elena Martinez, Arturo Hernandez, Emily A. St. Germain, Joanne M. Bates, Donald L. St. Germain

Dartmouth Scholarship

Although thyroid hormones are critically important for the coordination of morphogenic processes in the fetus and neonate, premature exposure of the embryo to levels of the hormones present in the adult is detrimental and can result in growth retardation, malformations, and even death. We report here that the pregnant rat uterus expresses extremely high levels of the type 3 iodothyronine deiodinase (D3), which inactivates thyroxine and 3,3′,5-triiodothyronine by 5-deiodination. Both D3 mRNA and activity were present at the implantation site as early as gestational day 9 (E9), when expression was localized using in situ hybridization to uterine mesometrial and antimesometrial …

Igf Paracrine And Autocrine Interactions Between Conceptus And Oviduct., A J Watson, M E Westhusin, Q A Winger

Obstetrics & Gynaecology Publications

Development in vitro is influenced by embryo density, serum, somatic cell co-culture and the production of 'embryotrophic' paracrine and autocrine factors. Research in our laboratory has focussed principally on the insulin-like growth factor (IGF) family. We have demonstrated that pre-attachment bovine and ovine embryos express mRNAs encoding a number of growth factor ligand and receptor genes including all members of the IGF ligand and receptor family throughout this developmental interval. In addition, early embryos express mRNAs encoding IGF-binding proteins (IGFBPs) 2-5 from the one-cell to the blastocyst stage and IGFBP5 mRNA at the blastocyst stage. Cultured bovine blastocysts release up …

Erythrocyte, Saliva And Serum Arginase Activity With Serum Urea And Estrogen Levels Inakkaraman And Ivesi Sheep In Pregnancy And Postpartum, Sema Temi̇zer Ozan, Sema Yaralioğlu Gürgöze, Tülay İleri̇ Büyükoğlu, İhsan Hali̇feoğlu

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Arginase (L-arginine amidino hydrolase E.C. 3.5.3.1) is an enzyme catalyzing the last stage of the Krebs-Henseleit cycle and, thus, converting arginine into urea and ornithine. Arginase also plays a part in protein and polyamine synthesis and is affected by hormones in terms of metabolic status. In the present study, erythrocyte, saliva, and serum arginase activity together with serum urea and estrogen levels were examined in Akkaraman and Ivesi sheep in pregnancy and postpartum. Comparisons were then made between the species. In pregnancy the urea level in saliva increased. However, the urea level in serum decreased. No clear difference was observed …

Determination Of Pregnancy, Embryonic-Fetal Mortality, Ovarium Functions And Uterus Diameter In Cows By Ultrasonography, Seli̇m Aslan, German Wesenauer

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study 57 cows at the puerperal stage (between 15-45 days) and at early pregnancy period (between 8-58 days) were subjected to clinical and Ultrasonography check at 10-day intervals. On the 8 th day of post insemination (p.ins.) areas of nidation ranging from 0,5-1,5 cm were established by means of US (n=53) and on 40 animals (70,2%) the development of these areas were followed until the 58th day of pregnancy. In the other 13 cows (22,8%), begining from early embriyonic featal deaths (18) days and late embriyonic featal deaths (28 days) were established ultrasonographycally. 4 animals (7,0%) that no …

The Role Of Plasma Endothelin-1 In Preeclampsia, Yalçın Ki̇mya, Candan Cengi̇z, Hakan Ozan, Levent Büyükuysal, Sami Aydin, Serhat Tatlikazan Jan 1999

The Role Of Plasma Endothelin-1 In Preeclampsia, Yalçın Ki̇mya, Candan Cengi̇z, Hakan Ozan, Levent Büyükuysal, Sami Aydin, Serhat Tatlikazan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Endothelin-1 levels in normal and preeclamptic pregnant women were determined serially to investigate the correlation between renal function tests and the severity markers of preeclampsia. Plasma endothelin-1 levels were determined in 45 serial plasma samples from 15 pregnant women who subsequently developed preeclampsia, and in 43 plasma samples from 25 women with uncomplicated pregnancies retrospectively. Renal function tests, complete blood counts, urinalysis and blood pressure measurements were performed during antenatal follow-ups of these patients. No correlations were set between plasma endothelin-1 levels and renal function tests, thrombocyte and white blood cell counts, proteinuria, systolic and diastolic blood pressures. There was …
