Sports drinks have been shown to influence running performance, however, the best methods of hydration are still unclear. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of water versus sports drink (6% carbohydrate/electrolyte) hydration prior to an exercise bout on the performance of middle distance, amateur runners. Ten subjects were randomly assigned to run two trials and began with either ingestion of water or sports drink. They then completed a maximal treadmill test to volitional exhaustion and returned two days later and drank the opposite drink. Can A Multidisciplinary Team Decrease Hospital Length Of Stay For Elderly Trauma Patients?, Beth A. Ramsey

Elderly trauma patients often experience prolonged hospital stays. This study was done to determine if a multidisciplinary team approach to patient care would decrease hospital length of stay (LOS) for elderly trauma patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). Using a descriptive, correlational design, a convenience sample of 74 elderly patients aged 65 to 99 years was obtained from a trauma registry. The hypothesis that hospital LOS decreases for elderly trauma patients in the ICU who have a team approach to care was not supported using the t-test for independent means (t=1.6, df=72, p=.114). Background: The American Cancer Society, the National Cancer Institute (NCI), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), including the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), provide the second annual report to the nation on progress in cancer prevention and control, with a special section on lung cancer and tobacco smoking.
Methods: Age-adjusted rates (using the 1970 U.S. standard population) were based on cancer incidence data from NCI and underlying cause of death data compiled by NCHS. The prevalence of tobacco use was derived from CDC surveys. Reported P values are two-sided.

Signal transducer and activator of transcription (STAT)5 is constitutively activated in BCR/ ABL-expressing cells, but the mechanisms and functional consequences of such activation are unknown. We show here that BCR/ABL induces phosphorylation and activation of STAT5 by a mechanism that requires the BCR/ABL Src homology (SH)2 domain and the proline-rich binding site of the SH3 domain. Upon expression in 32Dcl3 growth factor-dependent myeloid precursor cells, STAT5 activation-deficient BCR/ABL SH3+SH2 domain mutants functioned as tyrosine kinase and activated Ras, but failed to protect from apoptosis induced by withdrawal of interleukin 3 and/or serum and did not induce leukemia in severe combined …

This issue brief provides background information on the popular Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program, begun in 1983 and supported by education and law enforcement communities throughout the country to provide drug abuse prevention programs in schools. It describes recent efforts to conduct evaluative studies to assess the short- and long-term impact of the D.A.R.E. curriculum on drug-using behavior of children and youth and the new dialogue opening between D.A.R.E. proponents and the research community.

Thirty-two first-year nursing students enrolled in a first semester nursing fundamentals class at a local community college participated in a study that compared three test score grades between nursing students who studied with a partner(s) and those who studied alone. Four types of study groups were identified from a questionnaire by having students indicate whether they studied alone or with a partner(s) in-preparation for each of the three tests. The molecular mechanisms controlling bone extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition by differentiated osteoblasts in postnatal life, called hereafter bone formation, are unknown. This contrasts with the growing knowledge about the genetic control of osteoblast differentiation during embryonic development. Cbfa1, a transcriptional activator of osteoblast differentiation during embryonic development, is also expressed in differentiated osteoblasts postnatally. The perinatal lethality occurring in Cbfa1-deficient mice has prevented so far the study of its function after birth. To determine if Cbfa1 plays a role during bone formation we generated transgenic mice overexpressing Cbfa1 DNA-binding domain (DeltaCbfa1) in differentiated osteoblasts only postnatally. Cationic liposomes complexed with DNA have been used extensively as non-viral vectors for the intracellular delivery of reporter or therapeutic genes in culture and in vivo. We examined the relationship between the characteristics of the lipoplexes, their mode of interaction with monocytic THP-1 cells and their ability to transfect these cells. We determined the size and ζ potential of cationic liposomes (composed of 1,2-dioleoyl-3-(trimethylammonium) propane (DOTAP) and its mixtures with neutral lipids), and lipoplexes at different (+/-) charge ratios. In the context of the debate over bolstering consumer protection in health care without imposing excessive costs or onerous regulatory requirements, this paper examines the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) as a regulatory model. The paper reviews the provisions of the legislation, examines the roles of the Department of Labor and the Health Care Financing Administration in implementing HIPAA, raises issues surrounding implementation and enforcement, and examines the usefulness of the HIPAA model as a vehicle for applying consumer protection measures.

In most Latin American countries, a substantial proportion of children grow up in circumstances of extreme deprivation and early independence. These include "street youth", youngsters who work and sometimes live on city streets in developing countries. Most street youth research has been conducted from an applied perspective and emphasizes service and policy needs. Little developmental research has been conducted with street youth, and the long-term impact of street life is largely unknown. This review synthesizes empirical findings on the developmentally-relevant experiences of sub-groups of street youth in Latin America. Stress And Burnout In Female High School Athletic Directors, Jeffrey J. Martin, Betty Kelley, Candice Dias

In the current study we examined the relationships between stress predictors, stress, and burnout in female high school athletic directors (N = 52). Significant negative correlations between stress and hardiness and between stress and number of social support providers were found. Significant positive correlations between stress and time concerns, personnel concerns, and program success (e.g., winning) subscales of the athletic directing issues scale were also found. Subjects high in hardiness and with adequate social support networks, who also reported few athletic directing issues, were likely to report minimal stress. Significant positive correlations also indicated that stress was related to …

ยาไซโคลสปอรีนเป็นยาลดการอักเสบที่ไม่ใช่สเตียรอยด์ ใช้เป็นยากดระบบภูมิคุ้มกันในผู้ป่วยที่ได้รับการผ่าตัดเปลี่ยนอวัยวะและสามารถทําให้เกิดเหงือกงอกเกินได้เมื่อใช้ระยะยาว วัตถุประสงค์ในรายงานผู้ป่วยรายนี้เพื่อเป็นแนวทางการรักษาทางทันตกรรมแก่ผู้ป่วยเอสแอลอีที่ใช้ยานี้เป็นประจํา ผู้ป่วยเป็นโรคเอสแอลอีมาแล้วประมาณ 23 ปี ได้รับผ่าตัดเปลี่ยนไตมานาน 6 ปี แล้วผู้ป่วยคนนี้ได้รับยาไซโคลสปอรีน อซาไทโอพรีน ทุกวัน เพรดนิโซโลน วันเว้นวัน มีปัญหาทางทันตกรรมคือมีเหงือกงอกเกินที่บริเวณฟันกรามบนด้านขวา เคี้ยวลําบากเลือดออกง่าย การรักษาคือปรึกษาแพทย์ตรวจเช็คสภาพร่างกาย ให้ยาปฏิชีวนะเพื่อป้องกันการติดเชื้อหนึ่งชั่วโมงก่อนการรักษาทางทันตกรรมผู้ป่วยได้รับการถอนฟัน อุดฟัน ขูดหินน้ำลาย ตัดและตกแต่งเหงือกงอกเกิน ผลการรักษาเหมือนในผู้ป่วยปกติ สรุปการให้การรักษาผู้ป่วยเอสแอลอีที่มีระยะการใช้ยากดระบบภูมิคุ้มกันเนื่องการผ่าตัดเปลี่ยนไต เมื่อตรวจสภาพร่างกาย ที่อยู่ในระยะโรคเอสแอลอีสงบและได้รับการรับรองจากแพทย์ให้ใช้ยาปฏิชีวนะก่อนการรักษาทางทันตกรรมเพื่อป้องกัน การติดเชื้อ ผู้ป่วยสามารถรับการรักษาได้เช่นเดียวกับผู้ป่วยปกติ

Epithelial-Myoepithelial Carcinoma Of Intercalated Duct Origin: Review Literature, Kittipong Dhanuthai

The epithelial-myoepithelial carcinoma of intercalated duct origin is a rare, low-grade salivary gland neoplasm that exhibits a dual composition of both the epithelial and myoepithelial cells. This tumor can manifest a spectrum of cytomorphologic and structural features, but it classically shows duct-like structures consisting of inner cuboidal, eosinophilic, epithelial cells surrounded by clear myoepithelial cells. This review article describes the clinical features, the histopathology, the immunohistochemis- try, the treatment of this tumor and the in-depth discussion on the differential diagnosis.

ผลของน้ำยาบ้วนปากคลอเฮกซีดีนต่อเชื้อสเตรปโตคอคคัส มิวแทนส์ในน้ำลาย, อัจฉรา วัฒนสานติ์, สุภาพร เมฆวัน, วรรณวิมล อนวัชพันธุ์

วัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อเปรียบเทียบผลของน้ำยาบ้วนปากคลอเฮกซีดีนความเข้มข้นร้อยละ 0.1 และความเข้มข้นร้อยละ 0.2 มีน้ำเกลือ เป็นตัวควบคุม (control solution) ในการลดจํานวนเชื้อสเตรปโตคอคคัส มิวแทนส์ (SM) วัสดุและวิธีการ ทําการศึกษาในอาสาสมัครจํานวน 12 คน โดยใช้น้ำยาบ้วนปากทั้งสามชนิดในเวลาต่าง ๆ กัน ครั้งละหนึ่งสัปดาห์ และเว้นว่างหนึ่งสัปดาห์ ก่อนที่จะเปลี่ยนชนิดของยาบ้วนปาก ทั้งนี้อาสาสมัครและผู้ทดลองจะ ไม่ทราบว่ากําลังใช้ยาชนิดใด เมื่อไร (double-blind randomized crossover design) เพื่อทําการเพาะเชื้อ SM จากน้ำลาย ผลการศึกษาและสรุป จากการศึกษาพบว่า จํานวนเชื้อ SM ลดลงอย่างมีนัยสําคัญ ในกลุ่มที่ใช้คลอเฮกซีตีน ความเข้มข้น ร้อยละ 0.2 เมื่อเปรียบเทียบกับกลุ่มที่ใช้ยาความเข้มข้นร้อยละ 0.1 (p = 0.0077) และกลุ่มที่ใช้น้ําเกลือ บ้วนปาก (p = 0.0033) แต่การใช้คลอเฮกซีนความเข้มข้นร้อยละ 0.1 ได้ผลไม่แตกต่างจากการใช้น้ำเกลือบ้วนปาก จึงสรุปผลจากการวิจัยว่าน้ำยาบ้วนปากคลอเฮกซีดีนความเข้มข้น ร้อยละ 0.2 เป็นน้ำยาบ้วนปากที่เหมาะสมในการใช้ เพื่อลดจํานวนเชื้อ SM กว่าน้ำยาบ้วนปากคลอเฮกซีดีน ความเข้มข้นร้อยละ 0.1 และน้ำเกลือ

การใช้ยารักษาการติดเชื้อในคณะทันตแพทยศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย, อัจฉรา วัฒนสานติ์, ริสา ชัยศุภรัตน์, วรนุช เชฐษภักดีจิต

วัตถุประสงค์ การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษารูปแบบการสั่งจ่ายยารักษาการติดเชื้อในคณะทันตแพทยศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย วิธีการศึกษา โดยการเก็บข้อมูลย้อนหลังจากใบสั่งยาที่มีการสั่งจ่ายยารักษาการติดเชื้อ ตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. 2533 ถึง พ.ศ. 2540 แล้ววัดปริมาณการใช้ยาจากจํานวนใบสั่งยาดังกล่าว และนําข้อมูลมาวิเคราะห์โดยใช้สถิติเชิงพรรณนา ผลการศีกษาและสรุป พบว่าในระหว่างปี พ.ศ. 2533 ถึง พ.ศ. 2540 มีการใช้ยารักษาการติดเชื้อทั้งสิ้นร้อยละ 42.34 เพนนิซิลิน วี เป็นยาที่มีการใช้สูงสุด รองลงมาคือ แอมม็อกซีซิลิน (ร้อยละ 36.97 และ 34.23 ตามลําดับ) สําหรับในปี พ.ศ. 2540 ปริมาณการใช้เพนนิซิลิน วี และ แอมพิซิลินลดลง แต่มีการใช้ยาแอมม็อกซีซิลินเพิ่มขึ้น โดยมีมูลค่าการใช้ยารักษาการติดเชื้อคิดเป็นร้อยละ 22.07 มี แอมม็อกซีซิลินเป็นยาที่มีอัตราการใช้สูงสุดและรองลง มาคือ แอมม็อกซีซิลิน กับ คลาวูลาเนท หรืออ๊อกแมนดิน (Augmentin) มีอัตราการใช้เป็นร้อยละ 49.50 และ 8.50 ตามลําดับ ผลการวิจัยครั้งนี้จึงเป็นโครงการนําร่องเพื่อเป็นพื้นฐานสําหรับการศึกษาเพื่อให้เกิดความสมเหตุสมผล ในการใช้ยารักษาการติดเชื้อ และการสั่งซื้อยาต่อไป

Objective The aim of this study was to analyse the characteristics and the management of the patients affected oral pemphigus.Material and methods The data of eight patients with oral pemphigus were collected at the Oral Medicine Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Chulalongkorn University during 1989-1997. The disease was observed mainly in women. The age range of this group was from 27-46 years, with a mean of 39.6 years. Objective The aim of this present study was to evaluate the radiation dose associated with intraoral radiographic techniques. Material and methods The radiation doses were measured at eyelid and thyroid gland, using the alarm digital dosimeter during taking intraoral radiographic techniques; the parallel technique, the bisecting-angle technique and the bitewing technique in different positions of oral cavity. Organ doses were estimated by averaging the readings obtained from digital dosimeter placed in anatomically appropiate positions of 20 patients for each view.
