Sharing Information Benefits The Meat Industry, Michael Paton

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Cronic health problems of livestock, seldom detected on farms, reduce the efficiency of abattoirs and returns to producers. But a major project providing information to producers from abattoirs is indicating how everyone could benefit from feedback.

Bone Absorptiometry In Metabolic Bone Disease: Baseline Values And Long-Term Treatment With Calcitriol (Post-Menopausal Osteoporosis Versus Osteomalacia), A. Caniggia, B. Frediani Jan 1995

Bone Absorptiometry In Metabolic Bone Disease: Baseline Values And Long-Term Treatment With Calcitriol (Post-Menopausal Osteoporosis Versus Osteomalacia), A. Caniggia, B. Frediani

Cells and Materials

Total body bone absorptiometry reveals low mineral density in both postmenopausal osteoporosis and osteomalacia patients. The method was used to investigate the effect of calcitriol administration on patients suffering from one of these conditions. In osteomalacia, the administration of calcitriol resulted in a dramatic improvement in bone mineral density (sometimes up to 50% in 12 months), indicating the rapid mineralization of previously uncalcified bone tissue as a result of the normalization of the Ca x P product. In osteoporosis a similar treatment was seen to halt the progressive decrease in bone mineral levels and sometimes resulted in minor increases in …

Optical Bone Chambers As Tools For Studying The Bone-Implant Interface: A Review, Howard Winet Jan 1995

Optical Bone Chambers As Tools For Studying The Bone-Implant Interface: A Review, Howard Winet

Cells and Materials

Bone chamber intravital microscopy combines the control volume of in vitro models and the chemical complexity of in vivo models to optimize the study of bone physiology in situ. As an optical tool it provides a window to dynamic events at the tissue level of magnification. In particular, it allows measures of microvascular events: (1) in space by magnifying local perfused vasculature and microcirculation at any instant, and (2) in time by providing the same volume of tissue for weekly viewing of an evolving process such as bone healing. This quartz-bearing titanium screw has revealed a consistent order for …

Some Observations On The Structure Of Encrusting Biofilms Of Proteus Mirabilis On Urethral Catheters, C. Winters, D. J. Stickler, N. S. Howe, T. J. Williams, N. Wilkinson, C. J. Buckley Jan 1995

Some Observations On The Structure Of Encrusting Biofilms Of Proteus Mirabilis On Urethral Catheters, C. Winters, D. J. Stickler, N. S. Howe, T. J. Williams, N. Wilkinson, C. J. Buckley

Cells and Materials

A physical model of the bladder has been used to study the process of urinary catheter encrustation. Techniques have been devised for the preparation of sections through these encrustations in situ on the luminal surfaces of catheters and for mapping the distribution of calcium and magnesium in the biofilms. Transmission electron microscopy on these sections showed struvite-like crystals lying in the matrix and in direct contact with the catheter surface. Calcium phosphate ("bioapatite") was distributed throughout the film and many of these amorphous particles appear to have cells at their cores. Freeze-substituted sections of biofilms also showed electron dense materials …

The Use Of Titanium In Dentistry, Toru Okabe, Hakon Hero Jan 1995

The Use Of Titanium In Dentistry, Toru Okabe, Hakon Hero

Cells and Materials

The aerospace, energy, and chemical industries have benefitted from favorable applications of titanium and titanium alloys since the 1950's. Only about 15 years ago, researchers began investigating titanium as a material with the potential for various uses in the dental field, mainly because of its proven biocompatibility and other attractive properties. The present review examines updated information on the use of titanium in a major area of dentistry. Titanium-based alloys used for casting, casting equipment and procedures, casting investment materials, and porcelain veneering are discussed. Information about advances made in techniques other than casting, which could widen the applications of …

Legal Emotion: The Women's Story In Totem And Taboo, Arthur J. Jacobson Jan 1995

Legal Emotion: The Women's Story In Totem And Taboo, Arthur J. Jacobson

Cardozo Law Review

My aim is to uncover the unconscious emotions characteristically associated with some basic legal institutions. These emotions are ones we invariably have when we follow or enforce rules, fulfill duties, and claim or exercise rights. We know the conscious emotions that we experience-the cruelty of rules and our fear of them, the hopes in rights, security of duties, and so forth. Yet not all the emotions that we encounter in basic legal institutions are conscious. We experience unconscious emotions as well.

Rethinking The Beyond Of The Real, Drucilla Cornell Jan 1995

Rethinking The Beyond Of The Real, Drucilla Cornell

Cardozo Law Review

It is commonplace to note that Sigmund Freud "discovered" another reality. This reality is the reality of the psychic life. The meaning of its unconscious underpinnings surfaces in the other world of dreams and in the slips of the tongue that indicate a beyond to the day-to-day life given to us by conventions of our form of life. Certainly, Freud always returns us to the Jenseits, the other side, the beyond of the unconscious, which leaves its traces and marks on so-called "real objects," but which, on the other hand, can never be simplistically identified with them. An obvious …

A 31p, 13c, And 1h Nmr Study Of The Direct Interaction Of Cocaine Hc1 And Magnesium Atp, Gene Lee Bangs, Roger M. Hawk, Debi Patangia

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

In vivo 31P NMR studies recently have shown that cocaine causes an imbalance of the free magnesium in the brain which results in pH lowering, ischemia, and even death. This direct interaction with the free Mg+2 inthe brain also affects the Ca+2 balance which controls arterial and vascular contraction. This research has addressed the mechanism of the cocaine interaction withmagnesium adenosine 5-triphosphate (ATP) using 31P, 13C, and 1H NMR using a Bruker 200 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) system. Data are presented and discussed which shows that cocaine and ATP form a complex species which directly affects the NMR spectra.

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The conformation of the nitro group of nitroaromatic compounds relative to the aromatic ringsystem is suggested to affect their metabolic activation and mutagenicity. We have recently showed the nitrophenylfuran skeletal muscle relaxant, dantrolene, tobe a potent mutagen inSalmonella. Synthesis of or^o-substituted analogues of dantrolene was achieved in an effort to alter the conformation of the nitro group ina manner that willdecrease the mutagenicity. Using ab initio techniques we investigated the minimum energy conformation of the nitro group of dantrolene (/mitro) and its o-and mnitro isomers as well as the nitro group conformation of dantrolene's ortho- mono- and di- substituted analogues. …

Lacanian Ethics And The Desire For Law, David S. Caudill Jan 1995

Lacanian Ethics And The Desire For Law, David S. Caudill

Cardozo Law Review

American Critical Legal Studies has its own antinomies, its own indeterminacies, such that it is difficult to talk as though it is a unified position or movement, or even a single methodology or strategy. Generally, however, those who are suspicious of Critical Legal Studies have, from the beginning, aSked how the critical theorist explains his or her own ideology, and the answer is often that ideology is inescapable. Thus the critical project is about disclosure of ideology, not about the claim to know the truth outside ideology.

Aggression, Unconscious Conflict, And The Role Of The Lawyer, Jean Roiphe Jan 1995

Aggression, Unconscious Conflict, And The Role Of The Lawyer, Jean Roiphe

Cardozo Law Review

Why does an individual need a lawyer? What use is she to her client? Well, we answer, because the lawyer is an expert. She has a superior understanding of a highly technical field. And, of course, this is usually true. But that is not all. The client needs the lawyer not merely for her legal expertise, but for the management of his aggression. The lawyer offers not just legal defense, but defense against the fury of the drives, on the one hand, and the fury of the superego, on the other. The lawyer operates for the client as an …
