Gonadotropin hormones in form of 400 iu of PMSG + 200 iu of HCG were given to anestrus or delayed oestrus sows after weaning and to anestrus replacement gilts (Landrace x Large White). The animals were divided into a treated group (sows, n = 20 and gilts, n = 17), and a control group (sows, n = 5 and gilts, n = 4). The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

An experiment to stimulate follicular growth was performed in ten pre-pubertal swamp buffaloes (8-12 months old). They were divided into two groups according to the gonadotropin treatments. Five calves were injected intramuscularly with 24 mg of follicular stimulating hormone (FSH) and 2 months later with a 3000 IU of pregnant mare serum gonadotropin (PMSG), while the other 5 calves were first treated with PMSG which was followed by FSH. The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

An outbreak of concurrent Aspergillosis and Anatipestifer infection in Babary ducks was investigated. About 24.8 percent of 3,280 one-week-old babaries died, with lesions of focal pneumonia and multiple yellowish-white nodules, 1-4 mm in diameter, in the lung parenchyma. The lesions were also seen in the peritoneal cavity, brain tissue and bursa of Fabricius. Histological examination of lungs and brains revealed granulomas with giant cells. Mycelia elements were demonstrated in the granulomas by periodic acid schiff staining. Aspergillus fumigatus was cultured from the nodules and Pasteurella anatipestifer was isolated from lung tissue. The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The interaction between semen quality of Holstein Friesian, Jersey, Crossbred and Nili-Ravi buffaloes and the environment was studied. Semen was collected for one year at the Semen Production Unit, Surizai District, Peshawar from 10 Holstein Friesian, 4 Jersey and 4 Crossbred bulls and 3 buffaloes. Semen was collected early in the morning, twice weekly, using an artificial vagina. Environmental data regarding the monthly average temperature, humidity and daylight, was recorded. The correlation co-effi-cient between the semen volume, motility and sperm concentration and the three environmental parameters was calculated. Canine Parvovirus serum antibody titres in puppies before the first parvovirus vaccination were studied in Thailand. The titres were measured by haemagglutination inhibition test (HI). The puppies had HI titers between 320-10,240 with a mean of 1,280. There was no correlation between titres and either age or previous history of CPV vaccination in the bitches that produced the puppies. There was also no apparent association between titres and either sex or breed. The Effect Of Russell's Viper Venom On Renal Function In Rats (ผลของพิษงูแมวเซาต่อการทำงานของไตในหนูแรท), Bungorn Chomdej

Russell's viper venom 2 mg/kg bw was injected intramuscularly into rats. Renal functions after injection were studied at 1, 3, 6, 24, 72, 120 and 168 hours and compared with controls using normal saline. Within 6 hours of injection, all experimental rats produced oliguria, some anuria, some exhibited hemoglobinuria with severe bleeding from the nose and mouth and some were dead. After 6 hours all changes were less marked. At 24 hours, urine flow in the surviving rats increased without evidence of hemoglobinuria or severe bleeding. Room Temperature Aging Of Pd-Cu-Ga Dental Alloys, William A. Brantley, Zhuo Cai, Qiang Wu, Alan B. Carr, John C. Mitchell

Cells and Materials

Specimens of three Pd-Cu-Ga dental alloys cast five years ago and subsequently stored at room temperature were reexamined and observed to have lower amounts of the eutectic constituents in the near-surface region than originally present, along with other microstructural changes. This previously unreported room temperature aging behavior of these alloys is attributed to the presence of high-diffusivity paths in the non-equilibrium ascast eutectic structures and to the essential role of the surface for the vacancy diffusion mechanism. These results may have important clinical significance for the ill vivo corrosion resistance and long-term biocompatibility of the Pd-Cu-Ga alloys.

Colonization of urinary catheters by bacteria which produce urease leads to an increase in urine pH, followed by deposition of the minerals struvite and hydroxyapatite. Adhesion of these encrusting deposits can be reduced, but not prevented, by using catheters with a smooth surface finish. Chemical methods for preventing encrustation are not completely satisfactory. A better way of preventing encrustation would be to prevent colonization of the catheter by bacteria. This might be achieved by controlled release of antimicrobial agents directly into the urine from the catheter itself. Preliminary experiments have demonstrated the feasibility of controlled release from solid silicone. However, …

ศึกษาถึงความเจ็บปวดจากวิธีการฉีดยาชาแบบอินฟิลเตรชันที่เพดานปากสามตําแหน่งจากประชากร 200 ราย พบว่าบริเวณส่วนหน้าของเพดานปาก การแทงเข็มฉีดยาให้แนวเข็มขนานกับแนวแกนของกระดูกเพดาน ความเจ็บปวดจะน้อยกว่าการแทงเข็มตั้งฉากกับแนวแกนของกระดูกเพดานอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ (P≤0.05) บริเวณส่วนหลังของเพดานปาก การแทงเข็มฉีดยาให้แนวเข็มตั้งฉากกับแนวแกนของกระดูกเพดาน ความเจ็บปวดจะน้อยกว่าการแทงเข็มขนานกับแนวแกนของกระดูกเพดานอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ (P≤0.05) ส่วนบริเวณส่วนกลางของเพดานปากไม่มีความแตกต่างอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ (P≥0.05) ระหว่างการแทงเข็มฉีดยาให้แนวเข็ม ขนานและตั้งฉากกับแนวแกนของกระดูกเพดาน การหันส่วนปาดลาดของปลายเข็มออกจากตัวฟัน ความเจ็บปวด จะมีความแตกต่างกันทางคลินิก โดยความเจ็บปวดจะน้อยกว่า คิดเป็นร้อยละ 36, 64 และ 56 ตามลําดับ เมื่อฉีดยาชาบริเวณเพดานปากตรงตําแหน่งปลายรากฟันของฟันตัดบนข้าง ฟันกรามน้อยบนที่ 1 และฟันกรามบน ซีที่ 1 แต่ไม่มีความแตกต่างอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ (P ≥ 0.05)

ยาที่กระตุ้นให้เกิดรอยโรคคล้ายไลเคน พลานัส, กอบกาญจน์ ทองประสม, กนิษฐ์ วงศ์รุ่งโรจน์กิจ, มนวิภา ศรีวงศ์จรรยา

Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal

ไลเคน พลานัส เป็นรอยโรคเรื้อรังที่ยังไม่ทราบสาเหตุแน่นอน การใช้ยารักษาโรคทางระบบหลายชนิด สามารถกระตุ้นให้เกิดรอยโรคในช่องปากและผิวหนัง ซึ่งมีลักษณะทางคลินิกและทางพยาธิวิทยาคล้ายไลเคน พลานัสได้ จากการศึกษาผู้ป่วยไลเคน พลานัส ในจํานวน 81 ราย โดยแบ่งผู้ป่วยออกเป็น 2 กลุ่ม คือ กลุ่มที่ได้รับยาและไม่ได้รับยารักษาโรคทางระบบ พบว่าผู้ป่วยส่วนใหญ่เป็นเพศหญิง ช่วงอายุที่พบบ่อยประมาณ 41-60 ปี บริเวณที่ตรวจพบรอยโรคมากที่สุดคือบริเวณกระพุ้งแก้ม รองลงมาคือ เหงือกกับบริเวณรอยต่อระหว่างกระพุ้งแก้มกับเหงือกริมฝีปาก เพดานปาก ลิ้น และพื้นช่องปากตามลําดับ จากการเปรียบเทียบกลุ่มผู้ป่วยที่ได้รับยาและไม่ได้รับยารักษาโรค พบว่าผู้ป่วยที่ใช้ยารักษาโรคมีความสัมพันธ์กับชนิดของการเกิดไลเคน พลานัสในช่องปากอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ (P<0.025) คือผู้ป่วยที่ได้รับยารักษาโรคจะมีโอกาสเป็น ไลเคน พลานัส ชนิดอีโรซีฟ มากกว่าชนิดไม่อีโรซีฟ โดยพบว่าผู้ป่วยมักใช้ยากลุ่ม antihypertensive มากที่สุด รองลงมาคือ NSAIDS, hypoglycemic และยาอื่น ๆ ตามลําดับ

จากการศึกษาต่าง ๆ ที่ผ่านมาพบว่า ปริมาณและระยะเวลาที่น้ำตาลตกค้างในช่องปากมีความสัมพันธ์กับอุบัติการณ์การเกิดโรคฟันผุ การศึกษาส่วนใหญ่กระทําโดยการหาปริมาณน้ำตาลในน้ำลายภายหลังการอมสาร ละลายกลูโคสแล้วบ้วนทิ้งด้วยวิธีเทียบสีซึ่งเป็นวิธีที่ยอมรับโดยทั่วไปว่ามีความถูกต้อง แม่นยําสูง อย่างไรก็ตามวิธี เทียบสีจําเป็นต้องใช้เครื่องมือยุ่งยาก คือ เครื่องเทียบสีและต้องมีวัสดุอุปกรณ์อื่นอีกหลายอย่าง ทําให้ไม่สะดวกในการนําไปศึกษาภาคสนาม การทดลองครั้งนี้จึงนําแผ่นพลาสติกตรวจน้ำตาลซึ่งสามารถบอกปริมาณวิเคราะห์ของน้ำตาลในน้ำลายได้ โดยสังเกตการเปลี่ยนสีด้วยตาเปล่ามาทดลองใช้ จากการหาปริมาณกลูโคสในน้ำลายที่เวลา 3,5,7,9 และ 11 นาที หลังการอมสารละลายกลูโคสความเข้มข้น 50% นาน 2 นาที พบว่า ปริมาณน้ำตาลในน้ำลายที่ตรวจวิเคราะห์ได้ด้วยแผ่นพลาสติกตรวจน้ำตาลไม่แตกต่างจากปริมาณที่วิเคราะห์ได้ด้วยวิธีเทียบสีอย่างมีนัยสําคัญทางสถิติ (P = 0.05) จากข้อมูลครั้งนี้กล่าวได้ว่า แผ่นพลาสติกตรวจน้ำตาลใช้แทนวิธีเทียบสีได้ สามารถนําไปใช้ศึกษาการ กําจัดน้ำตาลจากน้ำลายภาคสนามเป็นประโยชน์ในการพยากรณ์อุบัติการณ์การเกิดโรคฟันผุในชุมชน และการให้ทันตกรรมป้องกันต่อไป
