Chulalongkorn University Dental Journal
Objective The healing response of non- molar sites, molar flat surface sites and molar furcation sites was investigated in 21 adult periodontitis patients following a periodontal therapy of plaque control, scaling and root planing Material and methods A total of 270 sites were monitored by recordings of plaque index, gingival index, gingival recession, probing depth, and probing attachment loss at 3 months and every 6 th month for 2 years. Results and conclusion The results demonstrated that in sites with initial probing depth of 4.0 mm or greater, molar furcation sites responded less favorably to the therapy as compared to molar …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
The aims of this study were to determine the degree of lipid peroxidation in the sera of postmenopausal women and compare this with the lipid peroxidation of a premenopausal group, and to see if there was any correlation between lipid parameters and lipid peroxidation within the groups. We assayed the lipid profiles and malondialdehyde (MDA), a marker for lipid peroxidation, in a postmenopausal group (n=57, mean age=49.4±6.6), an age-matched male group (n=21, mean age=48.5±6.7) and a control group (n=31, mean age=27.7±5.2). MDA was measured as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) using a modified version of Yagi's method. MDA was significantly …

Vitamin E and other antioxidants prevent or minimize oxidative damage in biological systems. The level of antioxidant defense sufficient to protect the organism from high free radical concentrations is one of the new horizons for Vitamin E research. The role of Vitamin E as a protective agent aganist oxidative stress was evaluated by meas-uring the antioxidant enzyme catalase (CAT) activities in different tissues of Swiss male albino rats aged two months. In this study, rats were divided to three groups; control (n=10), E 1 (n=5) which received 25 mg/kg. per day of Vitamin E, IM. for 10 days and E …

To investigate erythrocyte membrane protein abnormalities in Çukurova region we studied a family observed to be hereditary spherocytosis. Diagnosis was made basis of clinical features. By densitometric tracing of SDS-PAGE stained by Coomassie Brillant Blue, we found two spectrin deficiency, one ankyrin deficeiency, two spectrin-band 3 deficiency, one ankyrin-band 3 deficiency and one combined spectrin-ankyrin- band 3 deficiency.

The Effects Of Constant Darkness And Constantlight On The Pineal Gland And Thymusmorphology In The Rats, Nihal İçten, Filiz Karagöz, K. Ali Güneç
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
It is known that periods of constant darkness and constant light cause stim-ulation and inhibition of melatonin secretion from the pineal gland. It is also suggested that neuroendocrine responses to environmental stimuli, such as light, can influence immune responses through the pineal gland. For these reasons, in this study the effects of the alterations in the photoperiod rhythm on the pineal gland and thymus morphology were experimentally investigated. 30 Swiss albino rats, aged 4 wk, were divided into 3 groups. Group I rats were kept in a dark room, group II in a room under a bright artificial light and …
