Hüseyin Eray Bulut,Erdoğan Gürsoy, An Ultrastructural Study
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Cryptorchidism causes a failure in testosterone secretion from the testicles. The metabolism of the adrenocortical steroids is influenced by sex hormones. Therefore testicular failure may cause structural and func-tional alterations in adrenal cortex. It is the aim of the present study to evaluate the effect of experimental caryptorchidism on the ultrastructure of the rat adrenal cortex, especialy on the reticularis region during prepubertal and postpubertal ages. Three groups of animals were used in the present study. The first (prepubertal) group consisted of 5,21-day old rats whereas the second (postpubertal) group was made of 5,3-month old rats. Third group was the …

Patients' Rights In Turkey, Şükrü Hatun
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Patient's rights primarily mean the practice of human rights and values in the field of health care services and include the rights which are considered as third generation rights. Recently, in many countries, especially in European countries, concept of health care services which give importance to patients' rights has been developed. Patients' rights in Turkey is one of the least known issues and remembered only by physicians' malparactises causing death or disabilities some of which are speculative. Efforts are needed to strengthen the patients' rights should be accelerated in order to protect the patients and physicians from unnecessary speculations in …
Mannoprotein Adhesin Of Candida Albicansgerm Tubes, Gülhan Vardar-Ünlü
Mannoprotein Adhesin Of Candida Albicansgerm Tubes, Gülhan Vardar-Ünlü
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
The production and detection of a mannoprotein adhesin (MPA) of the hyphal-form cells of C. albicans on plastic petri dishes was investigated. Using Concanavalin A-coated latex microspheres, the MPA was detected on the plastic surface on which C. albicans produced germ tubes. The adhesin was extracted using dithiothreitol and iodoacetamide. It did not inhibit the adhesion of the yeast-form C. albicans to buccal epithelial cells (BEC). This suggested that the MPA of the hyphal-form cells on the plastic was different from that on the yeast cells responsible for attachment to the BECs.

Hypervolemia is supposed to be the principal factor in hypertension in chronic hemodialysis adults. In this study, the role of intensive ultrafiltration (UF) treatment to reduce hypertension due to hypervolemia in hemodialysis children was investigated. The inferior vena cava (IVC) was also evaluated as an index of UF therapy. Twenty-three hemodialysis children with the mean age 10.6±3.1 years were classified due to their blood pressure status. IVC measurements were performed with 2-D echocardiography and inferior vena cava index (IVCI) was calculated as diameter of inferior vena cava (mm)/ body surface area (m 2 ). UF therapy was applied to each …

Identification Of Fibronectin Adhesins On Candidaalbicans, Gülhan Vardar-Ünlü
Identification Of Fibronectin Adhesins On Candidaalbicans, Gülhan Vardar-Ünlü
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
The pattern of distribution of fibronectin adhesins on yeast and hyphal-form Candida albicanswas studied with gold-labelled fibronectin and transmission electron microscopy. The germ-tube parts of the hyphal-form cells were the major binding sites for gold-labelled fibronectin, and the attached yeast-cell parts and yeast-form cell remained unlabelled. Therefore, the walls of the germ tube parts of hyphal-form cells might be sites of important interactions between C. albicans and host tissues containing fibronectin.
