The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
Pasteurella multocida causes haemorrhagic septicaemia (HS), which is a severe epidemic disease in cattle and buffaloes. In this study, serological typing, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) were used to characterize 87 HS isolates caused by P. multocida from cattle and buffaloes during 1989 to 2011 in comparison with Thai and Laotian vaccine strains and the reference P. multocida strain P1256. The results of serotyping showed that the majority of the isolates (88.5%) belonged to serotype B: 2 (n = 77) while 11.5% shared with serotype B: 2, 5 (n = 10). MIC results showed that 100% …

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in bacteria, particularly in foodborne pathogens, has increasingly become apparent in most parts of the world including ASEAN countries, creating great impact on economy, human and animal health and international food trade. The tendency of bacterial pathogens to become multidrug resistant (MDR) is the most serious concern in AMR. The ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) will be fully established in 2015 and ASEAN cooperation has acknowledged the significance of food safety, of which AMR is one of the major concerns. The study of the ecology and behavior of gorals (Naemorhedus griseus) was conducted in Maelao-Maesae Wildlife Sanctuary, Chiang Mai Province during July 2012 – July 2013. The behavioral patterns of the gorals were observed using focal-scan sampling and descriptive methods. Results showed that the seven most common behavioral patterns were standing, walking, resting, grooming, scratching, feeding (foraging), and ruminating. Twelve plants were recognized as goral food based on direct field observations. Overall land area used by the gorals in this study was 81,124 m2. In vitro embryo production has proven as potential tool for understanding factors involving developmental biology of embryos. This study aimed at examining the effects of recombinant human follicle stimulating hormone (rhFSH) on meiotic resumption and also on developmental competence of cat oocytes. A fourteen-year-old female neutered Schnauzer was presented to the hospital with multiple syncopal episodes for two weeks. The dog appeared fatigue and sleepy but remained responsive. Clinical examination revealed bradycardia and irregular pulse. Electrocardiography showed sinus rhythm with repetitively long episodes of sinus arrest over 3 seconds, indicating sick sinus syndrome. The dog eventually underwent a transvenous single chamber permanent pacemaker. She was followed up for a month after surgery without recurrent syncope and irregular heart rate.

Leptospira is an emerging global public health problem which involves both animals and human. The aim of this study was to appraise the presence of Leptospira DNA in blood samples from cattle and sheep via Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) method in Chaharmahal VaBakhtiari and Isfahan provinces of Iran. One hundred and ninety five samples (92 blood samples of cattle and 103 blood samples of sheep) were collected randomly from clinical healthy animals. Recurrent Rumen Tympany Caused By Trichobezoars In Buffaloes (Bubalus Bubalis): A Series Report, Ashraf M. Abu-Seida, Oday S. Al-Abbadi

This series report was carried out for 3 years on 15 buffaloes suffering from recurrent rumen tympany associated with trichobezoars. Full case history, thorough clinical examination, ferroscopy, and vaginal and trans-rectal examination were carried out in all cases. The affected buffaloes were treated with rumenotomy. All cases were lactating buffaloes and had heavy hair coat. The age of affected buffaloes ranged between 5-10 years. Clinical signs included anorexia, depression, sharp decrease in milk yield, intermittent respiratory distress, recurrent rumen tympany and dehydration. Hematological and biochemical analyses revealed leukocytosis, hypokalemia and hypochloremia. Rumenotomy was curative in all cases and revealed trichobezoars …

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a malignant neoplasm of keratinized epithelial cell affecting both domestic and wild animals. A few cases of SCC have been reported in wild felids. A fifteen year old, intact female, clouded leopard showed signs of lameness and swelling of the right hind paw, which upon physical examination was noted to contain an abscess. Surgical biopsy of the site revealed a well-differentiated SCC. Attempts at surgical excision and cryosurgery proved unsuccessful and there was a recurrence of the mass. This clinical trial aimed to assess the intraoperative analgesic effect, based on the required minimum alveolarconcentration (MAC) of isoflurane, of transdermal fentanyl when compared with intramuscular morphine in dogsundergoing patellar luxation repair. Salmonella spp. is fecal-orally transmitted and readily spread into the environment. Little is known about risk of utilizing surface water in Thailand. Quantitative microbial risk assessment has been used to estimate the risk of waterborne salmonellosis. For hazard characterization, beta-Poisson model was employed to describe the relationship between dose of Salmonella from water exposure and salmonellosis. Prevalence and concentration of Salmonella in the surface water including water exposure were used to model probability of exposure. Bacterial isolates from different cases of respiratory infections in small and large ruminants were evaluated using bacterial culture and semi-nested PCR and identification was confirmed by DNA sequencing. Universal primers targeting the bacterial 16S rRNA for bacteria were used. Other sets of primers that were specific for Gram-positive bacteria and combinations of primers specific for Gram-negative organisms were used in the second PCR. The current research aimed to further study the delayed post-ovulatory progesterone (P4) rise in Thai-Holstein dairy heifers in the points of an association with endocrine events around oestrus (experiment 1), effects on conception rate and possibility for P4 supplement post-insemination (experiment 2). In experiment 1, the P4 levels in the delayed P4 heifers reached 1 ng/ml later than in the normal ones (6.8±0.4 vs 3.3±1.5 days after oestrus, resp.) (p = 0.053). Pathogenicity and transmission of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza subtype H5N1 viruses (HPAI-H5N1) depend on the strains and infection doses of the viruses. In this study, experimental infection was performed to determine pathogenicity and transmission of the Thai HPAI-H5N1 in Japanese quails. One hundred and seven quails were divided into 4 groups, experimental groups 1-3 (n = 32 per group) and negative control group (n = 11). Clastogenic and anticlastogenic effects of neem flower (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) extract were determined using a rat liver micronucleus assay. Methanol extracts of neem flowers (MENF) in 15% Tween 80 at 100 and 500 mg/kg body weight were orally given to male Sprague Dawley rats daily for 6 weeks (2 weeks prior to and 4 weeks during repeated administration of diethylnitrosamine (DEN). Twenty samples of Thai clay from fourteen provinces and seven commercial toxin binders were investigated for their adsorption capacity of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) in vitro. Each sample of 5 mg/l AFB1 solution was shaken at 250C for 24 hours and supernatants of centrifuged samples were analyzed for concentrations of AFB1 using a UV spectrophotometer. Adsorption capacity was calculated and applied to isothermic equations. The results indicated that Thai clays was capable of sequestering AFB1 from aqueous solution differently and Thai clay from Lopburi and Lamphun provinces had the highest adsorption capacity, similar to commercial binders. Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) causes multisystemic diseases called porcine circovirus associated disease (PCVAD) in pigs leading to a significant economic loss in the swine industry. The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of a developed sub-unit PCV2b vaccine using a recombinant truncated capsid protein expressed in Escherichia coli in PCVAD-affected pig farms. Safety And Toxicity Evaluation Of Bronopol In Striped Catfish (Pangasianodon Hypophthalmus), Patharapol Piamsomboon, Mintra Lukkana, Janenuj Wongtavatchai

The study was performed to evaluate the safety and toxicity of bronopol in striped catfish Pangasianodon hypophthalmus. Bronopol product is licensed in Thailand and Vietnam for control of aquatic fungi and ciliated protozoa in scaleless fish at the daily dosage of 10 mg/l, 2-hour static immersion, for 5 consecutive days. Safe concentrations were evaluated in fish exposed to bronopol at the therapeutic dosage (10 mg/l, 2 hours, 5 consecutive days) and 2 and 3 times overdose (20 and 30 mg/l, 2 hours, 5 consecutive days). The present study aimed to characterize chicken infectious anemia virus isolated from various outbreaks in Thailand during 2008-2011, and compare them with other strains from the GenBank database using molecular and bioinformatic techniques. For this purpose, thirteen samples were collected from eight commercial farms affected by chicken infectious anemia outbreak. All were positive by PCR and grouped in 2 clusters with phylogenetic analysis based on nucleotide sequencing, consistent with amino acid sequence analysis of the VP1 gene in the hypervariable region. Testicular atrophy is a major cause of culling in boars. Pathogenesis of this change is poorly understood. Therefore, we aimed to investigate pathological changes of the genital tracts of culled boars with testicular atrophy. Twenty-eight genital organs of culled boars collected from slaughter houses in Thailand were pathologically examined. According to testicular weight, the organs were allocated into 4 groups: severe atrophy (n = 12), moderate atrophy (n = 4), mild atrophy (n = 4), and normal control (n = 8). Avibacterium paragallinarum is the causative agent of infectious coryza, an acute upper respiratory disease in chickens. The aim of this study was to characterize the antimicrobial susceptibility, resistance genes and the in vivo testing of antimicrobial susceptibility in chickens. Eighteen A. paragallinarum isolated in Thailand were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility by broth microdilution method. A high prevalence of resistance MIC pattern to oxytetracycline, doxycycline, streptomycin, ciprofloxacin, erythromycin and sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim was found. Thirteen isolates showed multiple antimicrobial drug resistance (66.7%). The efficacy and safety of different live Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) vaccines were determined. One hundred and fifty six-week-old female layer chickens were equally divided into 6 groups. Groups 1-6 received F (two groups), 6/85 and ts-11 strains, positive and negative control, respectively. At 8 weeks old, 5 birds/group were sacrificed and gross thoracic airsac lesion scores (GTALS) and microscopic tracheal lesion scores (MTLS) were blindly evaluated. Twenty-two bacterial isolates from wild elephant faeces and 4 isolates from buffalo faeces in Thailand were investigated for probiotic properties and their lactic acid production. On the basis of their phenotypic characteristic clustering and 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis, the isolates were divided into seven groups. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of supplementary betaine in diet on milk secretion, milk composition, mammary extraction of nutrients and relevant parameters in late lactating cross-bred Saanen goats. Ten, multiparous, non-pregnant cross-bred Saanen goats of approximately 10 weeks postpartum were used for the study. The animals were divided into two groups of five animals each. Animals in the experimental group received diet containing 4 g betaine per kg of concentrate diet for four weeks, while the control group received similar concentrate diet without betaine as concurrent control.
