Comparison Of Biomechanical Properties Associated With The Diameter And Insertion Depth Of Bone Anchors In The Femoral Condyle Of Toy Breed Cadaver Dogs, Yun-Hee An, Mu-Young Kim, Hun-Young Yoon

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The objective of the present study was to compare the biomechanical properties of implanted bone anchors based on diameter and insertion depth to yield selection criteria for bone anchor size in toy breed dogs. Twenty toy breed dog cadavers weighing < 5 kg underwent placement of five types of veterinary bone anchors (short diameter, short length [SDSL]; short diameter, medium length [SDML]; medium diameter, medium length [MDML]; medium diameter, long length [MDLL]; and long diameter, medium length [LDML]) at a predetermined femoral attachment site. Anchor screw depth/femoral condyle width (FCW) and anchor screw diameter/femoral condyle length (FCL) were measured using radiography. The yield load, Young’s modulus and failure load were measured and the causes of failure for each construct were recorded. The anchor screw depth/FCW was < 50%, 50%–75%, ~50%, and 75%–100% in the SDSL, SDML, MDML, and MDLL groups, respectively. The yield load, Young’s modulus and failure load were higher in the SDML and MDLL groups than in the SDSL and MDML groups. The anchor screw diameter/FCL was 12%–15% and 24%–30% in the SDML and LDML groups, respectively. No differences in biomechanical parameters were found between the SDML and LDML groups. The cause of failure in all constructs was pull-out of the bone anchor, except for distal femur fracture in five LDML constructs. In conclusion, when implanting bone anchors in toy breed dogs, the insertion depth should be > 50% of the FCW, regardless of diameter. Moreover, distal femur fracture can occur if the bone anchor diameter/FCL ratio exceeds 24%.

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

The clinical benefits of Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) have been well documented in heart failure patients. In veterinary medicine, however, the clinical benefits of CoQ10 have not been well established in dogs with heart diseases. This study aimed to determine the effects of CoQ10 supplementation on 1) preventing myocardial injury 2) cardiac function 3) autonomic balance in dogs with myxomatous degenerative mitral valve disease (MMVD). Thirteen dogs with MMVD at ACVIM stage C were recruited in this study. Dogs were further divided into group I (Body weight [BW] < 6 kg.; n = 7) and group II (BW ≥ 6 kg.; n = 6). Cardiac troponin I (cTnI), echocardiographic examination, and 2 hours of Holter recording were performed on Day 0 and after receiving CoQ10 at 100 mg/dog twice daily for 28 days. CoQ10 caused a reduction of cTnI level in 71% of the dogs. Median cTnI tended to cause tended to decline but not significantly. Systolic function [i.e. fractional shortening (FS) and ejection fraction (EF)] increased significantly by 8 % and 9% (P < 0.05), respectively in group I after CoQ10 supplementation. Other echocardiographic parameters were not altered in either group. HRV analysis revealed no change in autonomic function and balance. cTnI negatively correlated with FS (P < 0.01) and positively correlated with LF/HF ratio (P < 0.05). In conclusion, this study demonstrated the clinical benefits of CoQ10 supplementation in dogs with MMVD. CoQ10 improves cardiac function in small dogs with MMVD. Finally, supplementation of CoQ10 in dogs should be based on body weight.

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a life-threatening complication in diabetic dogs. It is caused by an increase in production and accumulation of ketone bodies in the blood, which results in metabolic acidosis. The objective of this study was to compare the diagnostic accuracy between the measurement of blood beta-hydroxybutyrate (β-OHB) concentration using a point-of-care sensor and plasma acetoacetate (AcAc) level using a urine strip test for the diagnosis of canine DKA. A total of 60 dogs were enrolled into each group: DKA (n=16), diabetic ketosis (DK) (n=5), and control (n=39). The following parameters including blood β-OHB, plasma AcAc, blood glucose, urinary …
