The aim of this study was to determine the effect of dietary supplements of lead acetate and aluminosilicates on oxidative status in brain, kidney and duodenum of broiler chickens. In this regard, activity of antioxidative enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), guaiacol peroxidase (GPx), pyrogallol peroxidase (PPx) and lipid peroxidation was determined in examined organs. Escherichia coli strains from dogs with different clinical signs were studied for their antimicrobial sensitivity profiles, extended spectrum beta-lactamase enzymes, and virulent genes. The 364 E. coli isolates originated from the skin (32.48%), urinary tract (31.32%), gastrointestinal tract (16.21%), reproductive system (7.69%), ear (6.05%), respiratory tract (4.94%), and other specimens (1.37%). Using the disk diffusion method, the E. coli were resistant to amoxicillin, amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, azithromycin, cephalexin, ceftriaxone, ciprofloxacin, doxycycline, enrofloxacin, norfloxacin, gentamicin, and sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim at the rates of 84, 36, 41, 57, 38, 66, 73, 70, 64, 47, and 64%, respectively. Postparturient Administration Of Prostaglandin F2 Alpha Facilitates Weaning-To-Service Interval In Primiparous Sows, Atthaporn Roongsitthichai, Padet Tummaruk, Nutthee Am-In
The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine
The present study was conducted to investigate the effect of exogenous prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2α) administration on weaning-to-service interval (WSI) in primiparous sows. A total of 149 primiparous sows, 74 control and 75 treatment sows, were included in the study. The latter sows were intramuscularly injected with PGF2α approximately at 24-48 h after parturition. Results revealed that those treated with PGF2α returned to be in estrus significantly faster than those in the control group (2.6±1.1 vs 4.5±2.1 days, p<0.05), while age at first mating, pregnancy rate, and age at first farrowing were not different from each other. In conclusion, PGF2α could shorten WSI in the primiparous sows as it could induce complete luteolysis and promote uterine involution, resulting in declined non-productive days of the commercial breeding herds.

Two captive female Asian elephants (Elephas maximus) in Thailand were euthanatized after prolonged recumbency, weakness, and unresponsive treatment. Necropsy revealed multinodular masses of 5-10 cm in diameter which were irregular, large, white and firm in consistency scattered throughout the uterine horns and uteri of both the elephants. Histologically, the tumors displayed mildly pleomorphic, spindle-shaped cells arranged in interlacing pattern interpreted as muscle bundles. The bundles of the muscle cells were interspersed by small amounts of collagen fibers and blood vessels. For immunohistochemistry, the tumor cells showed diffuse positivity for vimentin, desmin, and smooth muscle actin. Based on the pathological results, …

This is the first case report on the use of autologous serum as an adjunct to successfully treat a melting corneal ulcer in a captive Asian elephant (Elephas maximus). A 40-year-old female Asian elephant was presented with epiphora of the right eye. It had already received treatment for 3 weeks, but had not responded to conventional treatment with antibiotics and analgesic eye drops. Upon examination, a melting corneal ulcer was found. The elephant received a combined treatment that included autologous serum twice a day for 79 days in addition to antibiotic, antifungal and analgesic drugs administered topically. After just 19 …

In vitro antibacterial activity of Bacillus polyfermenticus (BP) against tilapia streptococcal pathogen was evaluated using the agar dilution method and co-incubation method. Both in vitro tests confirmed the inhibitory effect of B. polyfermenticus on the growth of Streptococcus agalactiae. The suppression of S. agalactiae was observed in the test system containing B. polyfermenticus and the inhibition was more evident in the system with high density of B. polyfermenticus. Subsequently, feeding administration of BP was employed in tilapia broodstocks (12 months old) and fry (37.33 ± 1.37 mg body weight) to examine the effect of BP on health performance. The effect of tilapia diet supplemented with activated charcoal (AC) on growth performance and intestinal morphology of Nile Tilapia was examined. The fish were divided into four groups: a control group and three AC-supplementation groups (1%, 2% and 3% of AC in diet), and fed approximately 3% of body weight twice a day for 30 days. Growth performance and intestinal villus height were measured. Results revealed that the 2% AC-supplemented diet group was significantly (P<0.05) better in terms of percentage weight gain, specific growth rate (SGR) and feed conversion ratio (FCR), among the experimental groups. The foregut and midgut villus height of the 3% and 2% AC-supplemented diet groups was similar, but was significantly higher than the control group (P<0.05). Consequently, the supplementation of diet with 2% AC was found to be the most suitable for improving the growth performance and intestinal morphology in tilapia.

In Vitro Modulatory Effects Of Quercetin On Bovine Neutrophil Effector Functions, Phongsakorn Chuammitri, Chiradet Amphaiphan, Panupong Nojit

Bovine neutrophils perform numerous effector functions to overcome microbial invasions by utilizing innately-equipped intracellular and extracellular killing mechanisms. In this study, we explored the modulatory effects of quercetin hydrate (QH), an herbal flavonoid compound, on bovine neutrophil functional activities. Isolated neutrophils were incubated with various concentrations of QH (0-100 mM). Neutrophil viability results showed no signs of cytotoxicity (p = 0.33). In other assays, neutrophils were stimulated with a pre-defined concentration of QH (50 mM). Results showed promising effects of QH on enhancing intracellular ROS generation (p < 0.0001) compared to control. Phagocytic activity of fluorescently labeled E.coli was also augmented by the effects of this compound (p = 0.05). However, intracellular killing of live E.coli quantified by MTT assay demonstrated a slight decrease in activity (p = 0.304). Additionally, extracellular killing driven by NET-DNA release was remarkably higher in QH-stimulated cells (p = 0.0004). Supplementation of QH to LPS stimulated neutrophils resulted in significantly decreased pro-inflammatory cytokines, IL-1b (p < 0.0001) and TNF-a gene expression (p = 0.004). Taken together, quercetin could exert its noteworthy actions, both at cellular and molecular levels, at a certain physiological concentration.

We performed an evaluation of the effect of gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) vaccine on male rusa deer reproductive function. Mature male rusa deer (Rusa timorensis) were divided into two groups: untreated group (n=3) and treated group (n=7). The treated rusa deer were administered with two ml of the GnRH-protein conjugate vaccine (Improvac®; 200 μg/ml). A nine-year-old, male Cocker Spaniel with a history of surgical excision of oral melanoma located at the gingiva of the left maxilla was evaluated progressively over the course of 1 month post-surgery. The dog had shown signs of respiratory distress. Radiographic examination revealed diffusely pulmonary metastases. The respiratory distress progressively worsened and the dog died following excision of the oral mass. On necropsy, disseminated metastases to various organs including the lungs, heart, mediastinum, liver, kidneys, spleen, tonsil, lymph nodes, adrenal glands, thoracic wall, jejunum, pancreas, and brain were observed. The increase in multidrug-resistant enteric bacteria, especially Salmonella, Shigella and Proteus in poultry has become a significant public health threat. Therefore, this work was aimed to investigate whether domestic birds have a role in the emergence and transmission of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria in Taif province. The aim of this study was to isolate antimicrobial-resistant bacteria from intensive commercial and backyard swine operations (farms) in Northern Thailand and to characterize antimicrobial usage among swine farmers. A total of 51 swine farms in Chiang Mai, Lampoon, and Nan provinces were visited from February to October 2011 to collect swine fecal samples for bacterial isolation (Salmonella spp., Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis) and antimicrobial resistance testing. Morphology Of The Heart Of A White-Cheeked Gibbon (Hylobates Concolor), Tilladit Rung-Ruangkijkrai, Wuthichai Klomkleaw, Pakorn Prachammuang

The heart was recovered at post mortem from an adult white-cheeked gibbon, Hylobates concolor, for anatomical and histological studies. Macroscopically, it had oval shape, blunt and spherical apex with 3.5 cm. and 5 cm. in width and length. Smooth edged comma-shaped right auricle was markedly bigger than the jagged- edged left auricle. Pectinate muscles were found both at the internal surface of the right auricle and lateral free wall of the right atrium, while limited only in blind part of the left auricle. The study was aimed at characterizing elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus (EEHV) that was detected in captive Asian elephants in Thailand from 2007 to 2013. Six tissue samples of dead elephants and two EDTA blood samples of surviving elephants in Thailand showed clinical signs or had lesions of the viral infection. Samples were extracted for DNA amplification using a PCR technique with strain specific primers based on terminase and DNA polymerase genes. Six samples gave positive amplicons for EEHV1 specific primers and two samples gave positive amplicons for EEHV3/4 specific primers. An acute toxicopathological study of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was conducted in concentrations of 0, 1, 10 and 100 ppm in adult tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) at days 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4. Mortality, clinical sign, histopathology and immunohistochemistry were observed and evaluated. Calculated LC50 at 24 hr was 53 ppm. The major clinical sign was respiratory distress. Histopathologic lesions were found mainly in gill, kidney, spleen and liver. Severity of the lesions depended on the concentration and exposure time. To follow up our previous investigation of Sudan Red staining in plastinated brain specimen (Vibulchan et al., 2012), the present study aimed to examine staining dyes that can withstand the plastination procedures and be reserved in the specimen thereafter. Three staining methods, Mulligan's method, Alston's method and Prussian blue reaction method were tested in dog brain transverse slices. After the staining procedures the brain slices were dehydrated then forced impregnated using a polymer as described previously. The plastinated brain slices were compared for staining retention and analyzed for shrinkage. Results showed that Alston’s method of staining was preferable to dye …

Gill monogenean Ligictaluridus floridanus is the most common parasite on cultured channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus) in Tamaulipas, Mexico, affecting fish growth and possibly promoting secondary infections. In aquaculture, treatments against fish parasites include the use of chemotherapeutic agents to control and prevent diseases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in vitro and in vivo efficacy of praziquantel baths against L. floridanus on I. punctatus.
