The aims of this study were to investigate the levels of lactate and glucose in dogs during swimming and to determine the maximal lactate steady state in small and large breeds of dog. Twelve healthy dogs, including small breed (n = 6) and large breed (n = 6), were the study subjects. After swimming for different periods (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 min), blood was collected from the dogs which was then used to analyze changes in lactate and glucose levels during swimming. Degenerative mitral valve disease (DMVD) is the major cause of mitral valve regurgitation and heart failure in dogs. The regurgitation of mitral valve may affect blood pressure without clinical presentation. The aims of this study were to compare the systolic blood pressure between normal dogs and dogs affected with asymptomatic DMVD (class B ACVIM classification) and to determine the relationship between echocardiographic values and blood pressure levels. Firocoxib and carprofen, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), are used in the treatment of canine osteoarthritis. This study evaluated the efficacy and provided information of these NSAIDs in clinical practice. Sixteen healthy dogs of large breeds over 5 years old without systemic diseases and pregnancy that had coxofemoral osteoarthritis were divided into 2 groups, firocoxib group (n=9) and carprofen group (n=7). The study was conducted for 16 weeks. In this study, nine crude extracts from Thai plants in the Moraceae and Leguminosae families were screened for their immunoadjuvant activities on the proliferation of swine lymphocytes and the maturation of monocyte-derived dendritic cells (MoDCs). The study demonstrated that the total phenolic content was significantly higher in the extract from Artocarpus gomezianus (264.17±6.5 mg of gallic acid equivalents/gm of extract) than in the extracts from the other plants. The crude extract from the root bark of A. gomezianus significantly increased the proliferative response of peripheral blood mononuclear cells measured using both MTT and CFSE assays (p < 0.05). In addition, the A. gomezianus extract induced the maturation of MoDCs through major histocompatibility (MHC) Class II and CD80 expression. Constituents of phenolic compounds, in particular tannins and flavonoids in the gamma-benzopyrone nucleus group, may be important for the immunoadjuvant effect. The results of this study suggest that the extract from A. gomezianus have immunoadjuvant activities that may be developed as vaccine adjuvants.

The effect of low-dose chemotherapy on tumor motility of canine oral malignant melanoma has been investigated on an in vitro model using low-dose cyclophosphamide and piroxicam. Cyclophosphamide, at a concentration of 0.1 mg/mL in culture medium, significantly inhibited tumor cell migration/invasion through trans-well assays and suppressed both ERK and NF-κB signaling, the latter of which was observed through IκB-α and P-IκBα expression. Furthermore, in combination with a COX-2 inhibitor, i.e. piroxicam (0.38 mg/mL in culture medium), cyclophosphamide revealed a potential anti-migration effect over the single piroxicam treatment on a wound assay. This study investigated the level of protection generated by vaccination with a live attenuated infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) vaccine, H120 strain against variant genotype IBV isolated in Thailand. Sixty 1-day-old female broiler chickens were randomly divided into 4 groups of 15 chickens each. The chickens in Group 1 were vaccinated at 1 day old, whereas the chickens in Group 2 were vaccinated at 7 days old. Groups 3 and 4 did not receive IBV vaccine and served as positive and negative control groups, respectively. Tembusu virus (TMUV) namely KPS54A61 has spread in duck farms in many provinces in Thailand since 2010. The morbidity ranges from 15-30% and the mortality ranges from 10-15%. All infected ducks exhibit nervous signs including ataxia and paralysis. TMUV was successfully isolated from the brain and spinal cord of infected ducks by using C6/36 and Vero cells, but the typical cytopathic effect (CPE) was presented in the Vero cells only. Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) are known as pathogens associated with chronic diseases in cat. This present study determined the prevalence of FIV and FeLV infections in Bangkok and its vicinity, including Nonthaburi and Pathumthani, during April 2013-March 2014 in owned cats. A total of 777 serum or plasma samples were submitted to a private veterinary laboratory in Bangkok. The prevalence of FIV infection, FeLV infection and co-infection was 5.4% (42/777), 16.5% (128/777) and 3.5% (27/777), respectively. Fifteen Dachshunds, 6 females and 9 males, aged from 3 to 7.1 years old and weighing from 8.9 to 18.4 kg, were presented with various degrees of paralysis with deep pain on both limbs. The existence of clinical signs was observed by the owners and ranged from 1 to over 7 days. These dogs showed grades of dysfunction ranging from 2 to 5 depending on neurological examination. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of Lactobacillus plantarum on enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) and Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) in order to reduce lesions and fecal shedding for the control of colibacillosis and edema disease in postweaning pigs. ETEC K88 colonized in greater abundance on the surface of the small intestinal tract of non-L. plantarum-fed pigs compared to L. plantarum-fed pigs. Reduced intestinal adherence and fecal shedding of ETEC K88 was observed in the L. plantarum-fed pigs, whereas brain lesions and fecal shedding of STEC F18 remained unchanged. Avian influenza (AI) is caused by influenza A virus subtype H5N1. The virus causes severe disease and death in several avian and mammalian species. This study investigated the ability of swine and chicken tracheal cultures to support highly pathogenic avian influenza subtype H5N1 (HPAI-H5N1) viral replication. Three Thai HPAI-H5N1 viruses isolated from chicken (A/chicken/Thailand/CU-K2/04), duck (A/duck/Thailand/CU-328/07), and tiger (A/tiger/Thailand /CU-T7/04) were used to infect the swine and chicken tracheal cultures. Our results indicated that the chicken tracheal culture could support virus replication in contrast to the swine tracheal culture, suggesting that pig has low susceptibility to Thai HPAI-H5N1 infection. Understanding dengue infection and characterizing circulating viruses are essential for disease prevention and control as well as vaccine development. In this study, we aimed to identify dengue virus in healthy people living in an area endemic for dengue disease. Blood samples were collected from 52 healthy local subjects living in a dengue-endemic area of Thailand. This study was designed to compare the therapeutic benefits of a compound of omega-3 fatty acids from the New Zealand green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus) (PCSO-524) and omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil on clinical outcomes and osteoarthritis biomarkers (chondroitin sulfate WF6 epitope) in 66 dogs that had osteoarthritis (OA); 39 dogs with OA hip joints, 15 dogs with OA shoulder joints and 12 dogs with OA shoulder and hip joints. This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of supplementary vitamin D3 on productive performance, internal egg quality, eggshell quality, apparent calcium digestibility and vitamin D3 content in egg of second production cycle hens fed on different levels of calcium. Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) causes chronic respiratory disease in poultry. MG organisms consist of several virulence genes which are related to infection. The aim of this study was to analyze the virulence genes and determine the pathogenicity of Thai MG isolates. The present study aimed to estimate heritabilities as well as genetic correlations of sow longevity with average daily gain and backfat thickness. Removed sows included in the current study were 1,706 Landrace sows and 1,159 Yorkshire sows. They were raised in a Thai swine breeding herd and removed in the 2008-2013 period. Sow longevity was defined as the number of days from first farrowing date to removal date. Genetic parameters were estimated by using the Restricted Maximum Likelihood (REML) method with a multiple-trait animal model. Semen cryopreservation alters sperm structure and biochemical properties, and subsequently impairs fertilizing ability. A combination of two different sugar molecules revealed an enhanced beneficial effect on frozen-thawed spermatozoa of various species. However, the report in ram has been scarce. The present study investigated the effect of different combinations of sugar supplementation on post-thawed ram semen qualities in a cryopreservative extender in the presence of a single sugar or a combination of sugars. Data showed that a combination of sucrose and trehalose significantly improved cryopreserved sperm motility, viability, longevity and acrosome integrity. The objective of this study was to compare the effects of ascorbic acid and mixed electrolytes on growth performance, ammonia emission and serum antioxidant enzyme activity in broilers during summer period. Two hundred and ten male and female Arbor Acre broilers during grower-finisher period (22-42 days old) were allocated into 3 groups with different additives in drinking water: 1,000 ppm ascorbic acid (T1); 2,000 ppm mixed electrolytes containing only Na+, K+ and HCO3- (T2) and none (T3 serving as control group).
